Question for Die-Hard Sex and the City Fans
#0Question for Die-Hard Sex and the City Fans
Posted: 3/13/06 at 5:38pmWere any of the 4 ladies’ parents in any of the episodes? I was watching the episode where SPOILER Miranda’s Mom dies, and realized that they don’t talk very much about their parents, if at all. Especially Carrie. It seems odd. Was this a conscious choice?

Posted: 3/13/06 at 5:50pmAs far as I know, with the exception of the talk about Miranda's mom, the other character's moms are absent. Several of their boyfriends' families are important to the story - Trey's mom and Steve's mom... but I'm not sure why the women never mention their families.

Posted: 3/13/06 at 5:50pmCarrie and Miranda both talk about their fathers in a late Season 4 episode (I think it's "A Vogue Idea.") In this episode, we also see Carrie look at a picture of herself as a very young girl with a man who is presumed to be her father. I'm wracking my brain trying to remember who, if anyone, walks Charlotte down the aisle during her weddings but I can't remember. Those are the only parental references, other than Miranda's mother, that I can think of.

Posted: 3/13/06 at 5:52pmI feel like I read somewhere that after an episode where Charlotte's brother made an appearance, the writers/director decided it was important to keep the girls' families out of it.

Yup, Charlotte's dad walked her down the aisle (I think for Trey's wedding - don't remember about Harry's).
I was listening to one of the commentaries a few months ago, and I think the writers said they deliberately tried not to give the women much back story so we're forced to focus on the "now" instead of getting weighed down with history, family, and even how they all met.

Posted: 3/13/06 at 6:46pmThanks guys. This has always been curious to me. Charlotte seems like the kind of person who'd be close with her Mother, but I do get the idea about staying in the here and now. They could have gotten some great women to play Samantha's Mom though.

I agree, Bobby. It's an interesting strategy on the writers' part, but I suppose it worked. I would have killed to see who they could have cast as Samantha's mother.
And I can just express my love for the ridiculous Bunny?

Oh, Bunny.
That woman is insane.

Oh please, Jane. You act as though you're in the know!
My favorite guest characters...Aidan (he's set the bar for me), Anthony, that diplomat who had fantastic chemistry with Miranda in the later seasons, STEVE!!, and Richard Wright, because he really screwed over Samantha but he also made her more real.

If you were one SATC character (and not one of the four women), who would you be?
You start, Jane. I peg you as Kristen Johnston from Third Rock From The Sun.
And to stay on topic, I always wondered what the ladies' family histories would be. I figured Samantha would have a bad father and a really strong, empowered mother. Charlotte comes from a traditional Park Avenue family (two kids, homemaker mom, working dad, dog), Miranda had cold, distant career parents, and Carrie had parents similar to the ones of that short story writer she dated.

#13re: Question for Die-Hard Sex and the City Fans
Posted: 3/13/06 at 9:01pmThere was an episode where one of Carrie's dates was asking her about her parents - no, I think it was the Vogue one and it was the editor at Vogue who was coming onto her. Carrie, in her light way, only would say that her father walked out when she was - maybe four? - and then she made a joke out of it and said "And that's the name of that tune." It was clear she wasn;t going to say anything else.

The creator said he wanted the girls to be each other's family. With the exception of Charlotte's father, no other parent appeared in the series. And he was not given any lines.
Charlotte also had a brother who appeared in one episode and had sex with Samantha.

Oh! That's right! And she initially wondered if her trouble with men had to do with her trouble with her father, and then her new father-figure (the Vogue guy) came onto her!
And I think she asked Miranda, who said her parents had been together for however many years, yet she was still as clueless as Carrie.
Good episode.

Posted: 3/13/06 at 9:27pmI've been watching SATC on a local tv station. It makes me so mad because they have already shown the series finale as if it was just another episode. Give some thought to the story line for heaven's sake!!!!!!!!!

I know this is off-topic, but I was searching for the latest Sex and the City thread -
I just finished watching the Miranda's Wedding episode - the last scene - not the first time I've seen this episode, but it really affected me tonight. I think I'm coming to really love these ladies more and more. I just had to say that.

Posted: 3/14/06 at 10:24pmI also really loved the second half of the sixth season. All the women, especially Miranda and Samantha, matured so much.

Tiff, I never cared much for Charlotte until that sixth season (didn’t dislike her, just wasn’t as interested in her storylines as much as the other characters’). Loved her relationship with Harry (Kristin Davis and Evan Handler had a great chemistry), and the moment when Harry told her the adoption was going through (“That’s her, that’s our baby”) was one of my favorites in the whole series.

Posted: 3/14/06 at 11:08pmI totally agree. I didn't care so much for the baby storyline but I loved watching Charlotte and Harry's romance blossom, personally. I thought that was where we really saw how far Charlotte's come from season 1.
