I changed my mind..After the day that I have had, I not only would quit via email...I would do it right after I shoved my middle finger up my boss' a$$ and would write the email from her computer as she lay writhing in pain on the floor of her office.

Is that too harsh?

it would depend on how big your middle finger is.

why dirty your own finger? Make her use her own.

I was back to work after a two-week vacation and discovered that our Director of Public Relations quit last week...via email. What a timely thread, RobbO!

Friday - that way you get paid through the week. If you really hate them, do it on a Monday morning though

Someone in my office just quit via email, and I tell you - YES, it's frowned upon and you will forever lose a potential reference, marginal as it would be.

if you are concerned at all by any kind of work-related reference, noyt a smart thing to do.

If not, who cares?

I, personally would not do it via e-mail but you better believe if another job comes available, I am not even going to give notice (Granted, it is through a temp agency and I have only been here two weeks . . . . but I HATE it).

I just gave notice at my two most recent jobs via e-mail. I was rather unexpectedly offered a job out of state and had two weeks to arrange everything and get moved to my new location. The bureaucracy in HR at both the companies was such a nightmare that I knew it would take several days to get a hold of the right people if I tried to drop off a notice in person. I figured they would prefer to know ASAP because filling my positions would be difficult, so I decided e-mail was probably the best option for both myself and the companies I was leaving.

They were ecstatic that I even bothered to give an appropriate notice at all.

I used to quit temp jobs all the time via e-mail but it's not really the same. Most temp agencies here seem to communicate primarily through e-mail, so whenever I needed to quit a job, I just fired an e-mail off to my rep and usually followed up with a phone call once it was acknowledged.

Quitting should always be done in person. However, when I quit my last job, I emailed a copy of the exact same letter that I signed and handed to my boss. When I emailed it to him, I also CC'd his boss in the main office, HR and head of our division. I noted in the email that a signed copy would be physically delivered to my direct supervisor in the morning.
