Augusto Pinochet = Chile was the only S. American nation to assist the British in the Falklands War
Saddam Hussein = the US put him in power and supported him for as long as he was useful
General Suharto = another US crony
She was a steadfast friend to brutal tyrants such as Augusto Pinochet, Saddam Hussein and Indonesian dictator General Suharto ("One of our very best and most valuable friends"). = writer who is either politically ignorant or a blatant opportunist
i wonder if any of you had any of these concerns when turned Ted Kennedy... the drunken womanizing murderer... into the father of liberal politics and lion of the senate?
if so, you have my utmost respect. if not, shame on you

Again, you syllogistic reasoning has failed you. You obviously don't know what it means, but it is your argument style.

I always have contempt for hagiography that begins the day anybody dies. Always. Just like Glen Greenwald.
OK, very good. thank you. i respect that.
Yawper, what is your point, other than you once again feeling the need to be the voice of dissent? The article doesn't say or imply Thatcher is responsible for those men being in power, it doesn't say they were not US cronies. They were dictators. And she was on good terms with them.. Do you deny either assertion?
Sue, no one here apologized for Ted Kennedy. But Ted Kennedy is not even remotely similar to Thatcher in terms of global political influence.
agreed KAD, i was just asking if the same sort of thing was said about Ted Kennedy, since i wasnt here....
i can understand some here who do not like her due to her stance on gay things. i did not know that and certainly i respect that reasoning. why those close to me like her though is we feel she is greatly responsible for changing OUR LIVES. making it possible for all the great changes that happened at the end of the cold war. and allowing a great many of us to come to this amazing and beautiful country
Her stance on "gay things" is the tip of the iceberg here, and even you should be able to concede that.
She didn't shatter the USSR and end the Cold War.
She ruined the lives and livelihoods of millions, in the UK and, either through policy or as a result thereof, around the world.
She is not a saint. She was a savvy politician, who was more than willing to sacrifice the lowest many to save the highest few.
OMG! How coincidental that suestorm brought up respect for the dead.
I just saw this in her hagiography:
"Among the many qualities that Ms. Thatcher brought to bear on her public persona was her rapier wit. She was known for her irreverence at funerals during which occasions she would mock the dead."
Upon reading this bit from Maggie's hagiography, the ghost of Bonzo booked tickets to her burial and began to plan his revenge.

Unless Sue denounces this habit of Thatcher's then everything she says is hypocritical.
if thats true, thats disgusting.
Good riddance.
Does anyone know if Billy Elliot is making any modifications?

"Does anyone know if Billy Elliot is making any modifications?"
From a poster at ATC: "Some time ago, I believe when BILLY ELLIOT" was in its first year in London, a reporter asked Elton John about "Merry Christmas, Maggie Thatcher" and what will the show do about that number at the performance following her death.
Sir Elton replied that he would instruct the cast to sing the song as loud and as forcefully as they possibly could on that evening."
"Among the many qualities that Ms. Thatcher brought to bear on her public persona was her rapier wit. She was known for her irreverence at funerals during which occasions she would mock the dead."
Then I'm sure she would appreciate this...
'but she prevented GB from becoming a third world country,'
I think that's a bit of a stretch
And Sue are you from the UK at all or lived her during her years in office?

John Fugelsang: "People shouldn't say horrible things about Margaret Thatcher," say people who said horrible things about Hugo Chavez.
Namo beat me too it! I was going to post John's update too.
So I'll share the other one instead.
"I wanted to find an appropriate way to honor Margaret Thatcher today so took milk away from poor children whilst calling Nelson Mandela a terrorist."
suestorm- Can you go back to The Invisible Woman or even Baroness Thatcher herself and NOT have the fantastic Elizabeth Jennings?
Nobody is saying that the US are saints with when who they backed, in fact, if anything people who point this out about Thatcher are also critical of the US supporting Tito, Pinochet, the Shah, the Somoza military junta, having Operation Cyclone, and Operation Ajax, etc.
It is about the full scope of a legacy. Reagan's death and eulogizing was ridiculous. My family suffered under his policies and his anti-empathy lies he spread, and that is not even getting to his silence on HIV/AIDS that directly effected many people on this board. But it was ignored because he made a select few people feel good about themselves and believe in this myth that he alone tore down the Berlin Wall and ended the Soviet Union. We ignore how much he marginalized people and moved the goal post firmly rightward that has been going in that direction since. That is not criticism but true statements that should have been included in his legacy.

I guess I need to catch up a little bit on my history. I thought people did not agree with her policies on foreign affairs and different kinds of social views. I had no idea she was homophobic. I learned that for the first time today.
I found this article online today. This is what Meryl Streep had to say about her in the New York Times when 'The Iron Lady' was released, "What interested me was the part of someone who does monstrous things maybe, or misguided things. I did the same thing. We all thought if it can happen in England, class bound, socially rigid, homophobic — if they can elect a female leader over there, then it’s just seconds away in America.”

I also never knew that Julia Child had similar views as well.
