No, wonderfulwizard. Those who are the "spoiled children" are the ones using heated rhetoric and hate speech, akin to that of the despicable Westboro Baptist Church, calling for the death of policemen. Just as we have a responsibility to peacefully protest, which I fully and completely support, we also have a responsibility to choose our words wisely. There are dirty cops, there are black criminals, and there are white racists. But generalizations and labeling only stokes the fire; it solves absolutely nothing.

I have a friend, a Puerto Rican gay cop, for whom coming out of the closet was a difficult thing. But five years ago, he finally made himself whole with his family and his colleagues on the NYPD and he met a nice guy (after dating a few losers) and he is happy.

And I happy that he is happy.

He has many gay friends who are liberal and progressive and many who attended the march. But he was deeply, deeply upset when he saw this "What do we want? Dead cops" video, which of course has been co-opted by Fox News, but this is the raw stuff:

He asked us all "How could you march with people who want me dead?"

And we all responded "Oh, that's just a stray group of crazy anarchists. They don't matter. Don't pay attention to them."

What do we say to him now?

It is possible to condemn the message of those particular protesters (and that sentiment has NOT been the message presented by the majority of people marching) and still think the NYPD is trying to use this incident to wrongly incriminate de Blasio and other political figures so they can deflect the correct criticism of their policing practices. I don't want anyone killed, but I can still believe the NYPD is acting in the most petty manner about this.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

"Did anyone say they weren't allowed? Or that the comments breached their contract? They're just acting like spoiled children because someone dared to criticize them. But no one said they can't act like that, so I don't know what your problem is."

Exactly, the point clearly went over Sociopath's headband. Shocker.

"I haven't spoken to you in months. I have no problems with you."

Oh, but I have a problem with you. Sociopaths who threaten my life for no reason will inspire those feelings. It's cute though that you think you can ever ask anything of me.

Nah.

Back to the thread: A couple months ago, a white survivalist shoots 2 cops in cold blood, setting off a 7 week long manhunt. He too had written anti-cop screeds. And yet no one at the time was blaming the elected officials and calling for cops turning their backs on the governor of PA.

I am curious if after Lynch made a fool of himself did he express his anger to the NRA for making "cop killing" guns so readily available?

I'm obviously paraphrasing, but you are also the one who believed that rioting can be a positive thing (incorrect) and supported the violent, destructive actions taken in Ferguson in the nights immediately following the decision. It's beyond reason why I bother engaging with someone who actually believes that the loss of property, money, life, and all logic could be perceived as a 'positive' thing. Legislative change is positive. Peaceful protesting is positive. Arsonists, looters, criminals, and anarchists are not positive.

My heart goes out to the families of Po Wenjin Liu and Rafael Ramos, they've lost their loved ones just 5 days before Christmas...such a horrible loss for them and such a senseless tragedy.

All this finger pointing and blaming I am so sick and tired of reading it...nothing constructive comes out of it. These elected officials need to all come together for a positive solution. This city is becoming more and more divided from the top going on straight down.

I cannot believe that people still believe another gun control law would have kept either the NY shooter or Florida shooter from obtaining the guns they used. They would have gotten their weapons no matter how many laws were on the books. Stopping the demonization of cops cops would be start. There are bad apples in any group - cops included. Go after them and let the vast majority of good cops who do their jobs alone.

Re gun control laws, the rifle Adam Lanza used was purchased legally by his mother. She gave him the gun and she paid for it in the end.

"Stopping the demonization of cops cops would be start. There are bad apples in any group - cops included."

What would be terrific would be if the good apple cops would stop closing rank around the few bad apples and stop condoning what they do with their silence. And it would be great if the bad apple cops weren't such powerful bullies that they can silence the good apple cops and the communities they are supposed to serve and protect.

I have cops in my family (uncle, godfather, brother-n-law) and cops who are friends and cops in my life who are friends of friends. The ONLY cops I know who don't have unbearably thin skin when they get even a whiff of critique about cops in general are the women cops. Women cops that I have encountered in the world do not suffer from serious testosterone issues, as far as I can see. They don't strut, they don't pose, they don't make it abundantly clear they have chips on their shoulders.

You can't even suggest, as I once did to a state trooper I know, that the cops have something of an image problem (this discussion came after I had a ridiculous incident with a ridiculously Tom of Finland caricature of a state trooper) without setting off the most defensive round of "BUT NOT ME!!!' you could possibly imagine.

And yes, I know their jobs are terrible. I know they get exposed to humanity at its worst. And to top it all off, that humanity at its worst might try to kill them. It must be an incredible challenge to shift from serving the community to guarding themselves. I don't know if I believe a lot of them are very good at that.

I wish the good cops could speak up but obviously the bad apple cops are probably even worse to them. Asking for real community review boards is not the same thing as demonization.

Also, if certain people could stop white-splaining everything to the perpetually trod upon communities of color and not act like they are some sort of opposing players to your favorite football team, perhaps maybe civil unrest can be avoided.

"Civil unrest" cannot be avoided until there is positive reform in the NYPD and a reform on the use of excessive force in this country:

Oh, Liza, you stupid too, pay attention: I already posted that video in the post about my friend who is a gay cop. And I did it without Boldface Scary Font.

It was never a black vs. white issue for my Puerto Rican gay-cop friend, and it ceased to be a black-and-white issue for me the moment I found out the two dead cops were Latino and Asian.

If the bad protesters don't define the protest, then why do the bad cops have to define the NYPD?

I don't get that.

And, finally, "civil unrest" cannot ... and will never... be avoided until there is a full and complete end to the generalizations and labeling of entire groups or cultures; such as African Americans (they're all criminals!), Caucasians (they're all racists with white privilege!), Policemen (they're all corrupt pigs!), and Protestors (they're all rioters and looters!).

IT IS TIME THAT WE, AS A COUNTRY, REJECT THE CRIES FROM EXTREMISTS ON EITHER SIDE. STOP LISTENING TO THE WHITE & BLACK RACISTS. THIS IS NOT ABOUT SKIN COLOR, YOUR POLITICAL BELIEFS, OR YOUR SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS. THIS IS ABOUT COMMON DECENCY AND HUMANITY. THIS IS ABOUT COMPASSION FOR OUR FELLOW PEOPLE.
