I realise that there is a prompter etc that tells an audience at these shows how and when to react but really-a person has to sing above a middle c or wiggle their arse and the audience screams.I notice that sort of behaviour is moving into live theatre-and I object.I am old school--I sit quietly through the overture, don't talk, don't eat, applaud at the end of a song, then leave.I have been known to applaud when a ballerina does repeated twirls [can't spell the p word] right across the stage. The audience is now becoming the performer.

Posted: 1/19/13 at 3:48amIf you were really "old school" you would be demanding encores in the middle of the act. Historically it was not unheard of for an actor to just go back and repeat a song if the audience response was enthusiastic enough (especially in the opera world).

Posted: 1/19/13 at 5:06amYou missed my point--or was I not clear enough--my argument is with the fake over enthuastic response from an audience who has no idea how to respond unless someone waves a cue-card in front of them.

Who cares what a studio audience does on any show?!
Between this, and the fat people being weighed on airplanes, I think some people need to think before they post again.
Reality and talk show audiences#7
Posted: 1/19/13 at 10:25amYou also haven't thought of why certain reaction are elicited from the audience.
Reality and talk show audiences#8
Posted: 1/19/13 at 10:26amAre they reacting because they are too fat to fly?
Reality and talk show audiences#9
Posted: 1/19/13 at 10:43amyes, that and because if they sit silently through the show, they are tazered to get a reaction out of them.

Diva, I saw your avatar pic on another website comparing him to Tommy Lee Jones at the Golden Globes.
I laughed for 5 minutes. (ok, it was 420 so maybe it seemed funnier at the time)
But no matter, I can never get enough Tard.
Oh, I'm sorry.....what were talking about?

I think he meant "pirouette". Why would someone applaud a series of plies?
But other than that, what a ridiculous thread.
Reality and talk show audiences#13
Posted: 1/19/13 at 1:03pmBut didn't you guy realize he would start this specific thread?? I mean he/she did mention in great detail in one or two other threads that he had this idea to start a thread on this topic.

Posted: 1/19/13 at 1:23pmWhy the hate. I think his point was that audiences don't concentrate/pay attention that much anymore and are distracted. And he's right. (I work p/t FOH on Bway, and audience behavior is abyssmal and getting worse). POinting out Americans, - well, it's probably everybody everywhere, in general. A thread definitey not worse than Abby, Mikey or Colyer.

Posted: 1/19/13 at 1:28pmhmm, I didn't infer the same thing from his OP, tiny.

Posted: 1/19/13 at 1:31pmYOu mean he was dissing Americans, or what? Anyway, his other post about airplane passengers was indeed no too bright. Time will tell if he's a troll I guess....

Dissing Americans? no, not all.
I think he was complaining about - first of all, that the audiences for reality or talk shows are instructed to show reactions to what's going on by a prompter. I don't think it's because they are distracted. I think it's because the producers want those on stage and those at home to "see just how funny, sad, shocking, etc." the program is. They must have full control over the show.
The OP notices that the same kind of interruptions go on at live Broadway shows also. He doesn't think that there should be any audience reactions at all until the thing is over.

You're right of course, dramamama...that'll teach me to be a smartass - although maybe people would applaud a series of plies if an "applause" sign flashed, like the OP seems to think.

Posted: 1/19/13 at 2:26pmBut only the Americans that are on their phones.

Theatre diva I certainly agree with you that you should think before you post-you are so wise-may you heed your own advice.
Thanks for the word 'pirouette-' would seem so silly applauding a series of 'plies'.
Appreciate those who responded to my comments-I enjoy the freedom of speech expressed on this forum.
