This is the first review I've seen, and I haven't seen a thread for this yet (and I did search).

re: Review of HBO's Grey Gardens movie#4
Posted: 4/16/09 at 11:06amI lucky enough to attend a screening of it on Tuesday and I have to say Lange and Barrymore are both stunning. Barrymore captures the girlish innocence of Edie while also maintaining the aggression lurking just beneath the surface. Lange completely disappears into the older Big Edie and looks incredible in the flashbacks. The style of the film is a bit jarring early on (frequently cutting between the 70s and the 40s), but soon settles in quite nicely. I think the story of these two women resonates emotionally because they represent the idea of the unrealized dream to the extreme, yet there's always a hint of optimism in Little Edie. The film is very powerful.

The film is brilliant, plain and simple. I was expecting it to be good but not nearly as great as it turned out to be. It's cliche to say that someone gives the "performance of their career", however that's exactly what Barrymore does here. It's a bit of a shame this film won't be released into theaters because it would give Drew an opportunity to grab at least an Oscar nomination, as well as Lange who, let's face it, has never really given a bad performance in her entire career with no exception here.
Be sure to watch all the way to the very end of the credits, though. It's well worth it. :)

"Lange who, let's face it, has never really given a bad performance in her entire career"
How generous to even include KING KONG

Posted: 4/16/09 at 3:40pmQ, I hear ya, but I'm wondering how you give a good performance when your costar is a pretend gorilla. Do you think it's possible? Doesn't it have to be over the top?

Jessica Lange was incredible! I couldn't see beyond Drew Barrymore. She played Little Edie like a bobblehead.
All in all a good film.

I loved it. It answered all my questions and the Beales' story is clear to me now. The tragedy of little Edie's life made me so sad.
Both women played their roles spot on. Having seen the documentary as well as the show, I couldn't have asked for better portrayals.

I agree Jessica Lange was brilliant! There were times that i forgot that she is Jessica Lange playing the part. she's almost Big Edie down to her accent and mannerism!
love love the movie! I was disappointed not to see Jerry.

Same here.
Though I will mention that I am completely in love with Jessica Lange~oh my! she was brilliant! She is completely Big Edie...Drew is great, though sometimes- she is Drew Barrymore in certain scenes, but Jessica Lange was completely 100% Big Edie specially when she is singing Tea For Two and everytime she calls Little Edie...yelling...Edie! Edie! ~INCREDIBLE!

Posted: 4/19/09 at 12:04amI am just watching now, but not surprisingly, my only real issue with the movie is the recurring issue with all of Drew's work. I don't know that she's ever done a movie where you lose the fact that she's Drew Barrymore. So far, it's stunning.
