Babel for Best Screenplay? Interesting.
Yeah, kind of.
I guess I always figured it was between LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE and BABEL. It will be the consolation prize for whichever film looses out on the big prize.

I thought Little Miss Sunshine had it for sure, and if not LMS- The Queen.
I know no one will agree with me, but i predict here and now that LMS will win picture.
I am so hoping he is wrong and Peter O'Toole wins. If ever there was an actor who deserves one - and not a lifetime achievement award - then it's him.
Agreed South Fl!
Also, O'toole's performance was better.
it's a shame Cars is going to win Best Oscar.
seeing as Monster House was 1000x better
It is a shame but O Toole will have to content himself with his lifetime one
Shame on the voters for not honoring him years ago

OK why does he not indicate a preference for Best Director? Did he & Scorese have a fight over a chick or something?
THEY ARE CALLED PREDICTIONS
CQOT: "it's a shame Cars is going to win Best Oscar. seeing as Monster House was 1000x better"
ROXY: "It is a shame but O Toole will have to content himself with his lifetime one. Shame on the voters for not honoring him years ago"
You both assume that the awards will happen this way. With all due respect to Mr. Ebert, because he predicts it, does not necessarily mean that it will happen that way.

O'Toole is a walking legend and a brilliant actor. But, what he does in Venus is lovely work, but not in the same league as Whitaker's work. The depth and bredth of Whitaker's performance is pretty stunning.
But, beyond that, I'd agree with most of what Ebert says. I love that he won't get into the director discussion. lol
Pab, i realize that Mr Ebert is just predicting but, really, does anyone expect monster house to win? NO. it's between Cars and Happy Feet. So I should be happy if Happy Feet doesn't win, i guess
The best animated fil was not even nominated! Flushed Away was definetely better than Cars.
little miss sunshine is a fantatsic movie. It will probally not win best picture but i thought it had screenplay down for sure. I hope Jennifer Hudson Wins. If there was a "2nd place", after seeing all nominated, i wish it would go to abigal breslin

If I had to bet money, I'd say Ebert's preference for Best Director was Clint Eastwood.
Take it to the bank - Whittaker will win
Whitaker deserves to win. Sure, I'd like to see O'Toole take the stage and win an Oscar - but not at the expense of Whitaker's absolutely brilliant performance.
tazber: I predicted a while ago that LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE would win best picture. My convictions are fading, but I'm still standing by it for now.
I don't find these predictions interesting at all. By and large, they all seem to be the general consensus.
This year is so up for grabs, I think SUNSHINE is the only movie the entire voting block could get behind (besides DREAMGIRLS, but that's a moot point). I agree with all who hold that SUNSHINE is where they'll mark their x's.
No one asked me, but personally I'd go with Dench and Gosling and Eastwood.

I can't help but think that at least some people are going to view Clint's TWO pictures as a whole package - and vote for that achievement alone. And SOMETHING has kept the statue out of Martin's hands all these years . . .
And as for the Best Actor award, there's got to be at least some people who feel a little 'played' by Peter. "No, I don't want you life achievement, I'd rather earn one - OK, I WILL take it - and now, I'll come and play the game to get the real thing." Besides, it's not like Forest is a newcomer - he has a long track record, and a respected one at that.
It's between The Queen and Little Miss Sunshine for Best Original Screenplay.
I really don't think Babel has a chance of winning in the Screenplay category at all.
And if Babel wins Best Picture...a lot of people will be pissed.
It's not nearly the best film of the year. Hell it's not even one of the top ten films of the year. I think it's a horse race between The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine.
"And if Babel wins Best Picture...a lot of people will be pissed."
I would say that if ANY of these five films wins Best Picture, a lot of people will be pissed.
There are no big camps of support behind any one of them. They all have their groups of supporters AND detractors.
O'Toole is a walking legend and a brilliant actor. But, what he does in Venus is lovely work, but not in the same league as Whitaker's work. The depth and bredth of Whitaker's performance is pretty stunning.
I totally agree. Whitake deserves it.
Also, I agree with those who feel that Monster House deserved animated film.
broadway86-
I TOTALLY agree about MONSTER HOUSE.
