I think Colbert has terrific instincts and skills as a performer and comedian- we're used to him as "Stephen Colbert," but I think he's proven himself outside of that. There'll be a transition period, I'm sure, where he's feeling out his new gig, but I feel that he'll find his footing very quickly.
I think, or at least I hope, that we haven't seen the height of Colbert's game. I'm constantly impressed by his quick wit, his broad range of knowledge, and his ability to interact with politicians, rock stars, writers, etc. Agreed that will be a shock for his current fans to adjust, but I think his upside is enormous.
On Morning Joe today, it was confirmed that Colbert would keep the show at the Ed Sullivan Theater.
After Mr Roxy's excessive (and pointless) post on the Bullets review thread, I joined the club of those who have blocked him.
He was hysterical on Strangers With Candy. People acting like this is Paul Reubens without Pee Wee Herman or when Charles Grodin decided to drop out of acting to be a newsman need to look at his pre-TDS career.
I get there is a difference between acting and being a late night talk show host but if there was a time he was funny enough to attract the attention of Amy Sedaris, then he should be fine.

I think my point wasn't quite clear.
It's not just a question of CAN he do it, but will viewers accept him doing it.
It's not the capabilities I'm calling into question. It's the expectations of the TV audience.
That is true though I would say the early dismissals of whether or not he can do it almost plays into his favor in terms of expectations.
In just the first two days since the announcement I think they've done a good job making it clear to most people that he won't be doing the show "in character" so after another year of buildup, everyone except the chronically clueless will be going in without an expectation that it will be a 60 minute version of the Colbert Report. Then, it just becomes a question of whether he can still be funny and entertaining without it. I'm going to bet "yes".

Our worries have been for naught. I hear his last name is going to be pronounced "Coal-bert" not "Coal-bear."
So Roxy WAS right! Coal-bear is toas!!!
I think his audience has been getting a little tired of the persona anyway. Those of us who knew him from things like the Amy Sedaris series have always known he was capable of more. Every single viewer of the Colbert Report has always known that it was a character. And the people who don't know him at all will delight in his humor and talent.
So I can't imagine a single person in the viewing public who will be disappointed.
Not one.

"Every single viewer of the Colbert Report has always known that it was a character."
I think Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh came late to that news.
They never viewed whole episodes. They just watched clips.
PJ, I just read somewhere on-line, that 27% of those polled thought Colbert was Right Wing!
I worked with him on the short lived Dana Carvey Show, he will do just fine on the Late Show! Her is very personable, charming, and has a razor edged wit. Couldn't think of a better successor!

I wanna know about this toast. What do we serve with it? Jellies and clotted cream? Chipped beef?
Snafu--that poll was also done only with people watching clips.
Not one?
PJ, I have no idea what world your living in. It's not the one watching the Colber(t) Repor(t).

There's a cool new song out from Broadway called "Let It Go". Let's all sing along, one, two three…
"Cold never bothered me anyway…"
Only if you start ... and we announce your name wrong first!

I *did* start. You seem quite invested in having the last word on this.

Of course, there is the possibility that Mr Roxy meant it in a literal sense.
