Craig Ferguson, longtime host of The Late Late Show following Letterman, had a clause in his contract guaranteeing him first right of refusal to hosting Late Show after Letterman retires but either Ferguson turned down the job or CBS execs, who are said to have never seen Ferguson as the heir to Letterman's show, bought him out.

CBS Announces Stephen Colbert Will Take Over for Letterman
Craig and Conan really don't enter into the equation. The Late Show and The Tonight Show are in direct competition with each other. Sure, Kimmel is in there but is a distant 3rd.
The $5-million number is speculation, but the Times reported that Ferguson had a "Prince of Wales" clause two years ago.
NY Times: MEDIA DECODER; Letterman and Ferguson To Continue on CBS
I doubt it's that much. Supposedly Conan O'Brien got $10 million when he was nixed.
If only Conan got that little. He was paid a much larger buyout/settlement.
Conan's NBC Buyout was $45 million.
I'm personally disappointed there isn't more diversity in this Late Night time period.
We'll just have to start our own show, Addy. You can host and I'll be the loveable sidekick
“Stephen has always been a real friend to me. I’m very excited for him, and I’m flattered that CBS chose him. I also happen to know they wanted another guy with glasses,” the 66-year-old television personality said in a statement.

CBS has a hard time breaking out of its molds. That's why prime time is mostly the same procedural with just a different collection of letters for titles.
It is hard to believe that in 2014 the idea of a woman host is still radical. I do think Chelsea Handler would have been an utter disaster.
The outrage, real or feigned, makes this even better:
"CBS has just declared war on the heartland of America. No longer is comedy going to be a covert assault on traditional American values, conservatism. Now it's just wide out in the open. What this hire means is a redefinition of what is funny, and a redefinition of what is comedy. They're blowing up the 11:30 format... they hired a partisan, so-called comedian, to run a comedy show."
So says Rush Limbaugh.
"Redefinition" seems for some to be the scariest word in the world nowadays.
Redefinition also seems like the entirely wrong word.
Maya Rudolf is getting a show. They are shooting the pilot next week, I think it is a variety/comedy sketch/ interview show.

It's just so bizarre since Rush's acolytes run to "he's just a comedian" when he says something objectively racist and homophobic. But, if he sees a straight white male like Colbert as an assault on traditional conservative American values then he knows he's losing the war along with his sponsors.

SNAFU - That's slated for primetime, though. Not late night.
It will be interesting to see how Colbert will deal with the new gig, when he gets it. Somehow I think he will drop the character. He is quite funny and charming naturally. So many people will be expecting Colbert from the Report.

This makes me sad because I don't want to lose the Colbert Report. :/ I wonder who would get a show in his place. I'd love to see Kristen Schaal take over the slot.

They've already said he's dropping the character. And you know, it might be the perfect time for it. He's done so many incredible things. I don't think his natural wit and support for the underdogs is likely to vanish with the character.

Godnamo it. That’s what I was looking for when I Googled. I didn’t Google hard enough.
I hope he keeps with having Amy Sedaris on a lot. The two of them together is just magic.
