But Roy Scheider died and I'm sorry to hear it-I enjoyed his film work in Jaws.
I just hope this thread doesn't end up like some of the other "so and so died" threads-

Posted: 2/10/08 at 10:20pmSad news. I first met Roy Scheider when he spoke at my AADA graduation, at The Music Box theatre, back in 1980. We crossed paths a few times more over the years. He was much better than "that actor in Jaws". He will be missed.

Posted: 2/10/08 at 10:25pmI meant no offense in referring to Jaws. In my opinion he was superb in Jaws, and that happens to be the only thing I saw him in. Which I watched around 50 times, and his performance in it is one of the main reasons!

Posted: 2/10/08 at 10:38pmActually it wasn't your reference to which I was referring, it was the one in the Times. I also thought that he was good in the movie but there was a lot of other work that was overlooked because of the popularity of Jaws. He only made the second one because he was forced to by his contract but he was so ready to move on to something else.

I see-I hadn't read the Times piece.
I guess his is another instance where too much recognition for one role can be a bad thing!

I loved him in The French Connection and All That Jazz.
Such a wonderful actor and screen presence. I always wanted to see him in more films, but I'm grateful for the ones we have. Classic performances in classic movies.
*very sad*

Posted: 2/10/08 at 10:53pmHe was brilliant in All That Jazz. I've been thinking about him a lot lately and wondered why we hadn't seen him. It really is very sad that he's gone.

Posted: 2/10/08 at 10:57pmI had the opportunity to see him on Broadway in Harold Pinter's 'Betrayal' with Blythe Danner and Raul Juila.

Posted: 2/10/08 at 10:58pmTo me, his greatest performance was in All That Jazz. He was never able to really hit again after that. Too bad, a very fine actor.

Posted: 2/10/08 at 11:12pmA good actor. Liked him in all of the above plus Sorcerer and Marathon Man.

Posted: 2/11/08 at 2:56amI loved him in "All That Jazz" also. He was also in a movie with Ann Margaret in the 80's, but I can't recall the name of the movie. Anyone remember this one? I enjoyed his work in that movie too...

Posted: 2/11/08 at 3:06am52 Pick Up was the film Scheider made with Ann-Margret in the '80s, but they also starred together in the '70s thriller THE OUTSIDE MAN with Angie Dickinson. Good Actor. RIP.

Posted: 2/11/08 at 4:28amI didn't watch it, but I remember that it was a TV show. It was on in the mid-90's, correct?

Nobody ever mentions it - but I happen to be a fan of "2010" as well. The cast was filled with terrific actors but it was Scheider's performance as Heywood Floyd who held them all together.

I was really sad when I read this this morning. I'm a huge Jaws fan and his performance in it is wonderful. And French Connection, of course.
RIP Roy. You'll be missed.

Posted: 2/11/08 at 10:40amIn addition to all of the fine performances, particularly in "All That Jazz", he was sexy and scary in "Klute" as Bree Daniels' pimp.

A fine actor, indeed, one that I'd have liked to have seen more of.
Anyone have any idea what the Dave Kehr in the Times is talking about when he refers to the "accelerated metabolism" Scheider brought to his role in KLUTE? I can't think of too many less accelerated actors than Scheider, metabolically or otherwise.
