If men got pregnant, abortion would be sacrosanct.

27 threads about the Academy Awards, and only a few posts on the fact that South Dakota outlawed abortion today?
Where's the outrage?

This is such a giant step backwards. It breaks my heart. And now ten other states are drafting additional laws.
What a backasswards country.

It's going to require an extrememly organized and targeted fight...
The rights implications of this are terrifying.

There are are additional states who intend to follow SD's lead. This is not just one state. It is happening all over the country.
There are some discussions that there is hope that Bush will get yet another Justice on the court before the legal challenge to this law comes to fruition.
We cannot let the Republicans maintain control of both houses in 2006. Bush cannot get to appoint another justice.

Funny thing. There's a loophole.
Section 3: "Nothing in section 2 of this Act may be construed to prohibit the sale, use, prescription, or administration of a contraceptive measure, drug or chemical, if it is administered prior to the time when a pregnancy could be determined through conventional medical testing."
That says morning-after drug to me. So it's illegal because you take it after fertilization (though before implantation, which is what pregnancy tests detect). But it's legal, because...that section says so. Hm.

I agree that we should Addy, but this is something that will actually get me angry. I am not sure I can take it.

I can't act while angry.

I turn my anger into productive activity... it sometimes inspires me.
Seeing it come to this is unconscionable.

I agree.
And sometimes that works for me too. I am talking more that moment of "tantrum" anger, which this has me on the verge of.
I hope the call to action is clear.

It's freaking me out that both my birth country and the country I consider home seems to be moving farther and farther toward becoming insanely conservative and overturning whatever progress has been made. I read the local papers and read about some proposed law that makes me want to scream... and then I go to the internet to check on US news... and... I see... this.

This is most disturbing. But maybe this will be the action that once and for all forces the Democrats to organize and become undeterred in their resolve to "reclaim" the country. Something has to.

I think this goes beyond party politics - although it's certainly a big factor.
I think that women's rights/human rights and fighting for freedom is something that we all have to figure out how to participate in.
It might be about abortion law, it might be about gay marriage, but we have to change people's minds. When people's minds are changed - and there is outrage at injustice - change will happen. Voting is an important place to start, but we can't wait for the next election to fight this.
Start to raise awareness now.

I, for one, am saddened by this. In a country that I once felt proud to be apart of, now I'm almost embarrassed to say that I live here. The religious right has too much power and squashing the rights of the citizens of our nation. If you aren't a middle to upper class white heterosexual male you pretty much are having your rights trampled upon.
I just wish the government would just wise up and realize that we are ALL citizens of this once great nation and we all should be treated with equality and respect. Government should not let bias' and religious convictions cloud their judgement on what is best for it's people. Not everyone is a christian and we should not be forced to take on christian ideals just to live here in the USA.
I was raised catholic, and have hence turned agnostic due to the sheer hypocrasy the teachings tought me, a hypocrasy I didn't realize til I had entered my late teens and realized the other views out there and that I could make up my mind for myself.
A woman's right to choose what she does with her body should be protected and the government should not get to say how i choose to handle my body. They don't tell me what drugs to take when i'm sick, what surgery's i should and should not have, what makes this any different?
Where as I may never want to have an abortion, that is my right and I should have the option available as should all woman. And if the government is niave enough to believe that by outlawing abortions that people won't have them, they are in for a rude awakening when we revert to how it was before RvW, in the times of back alley abortions and coathangers. So instead of having safe procedures by qualified doctors, people will be dying because of unsafe abortions performed and thus losing not only the life of the fetus, but the mother as well, is that what the government wants?
*sighs* I just wish this wasn't happening, I keep thinking i'm going to wake up and the last 6 years will be just a dream and we'll have a compitant president who doesn't let religious morals cloud what is best for our country and all our citizens are treated with the same respect and are equal in the eyes of the law. Maybe one day this will happen and I pray that day happens soon...

Well said, staticradar. This bodes so badly for the future and shows how little women are regarded in this country's laws.
I think we can all agree that abortion is not a happy, good thing. I doubt anyone is wandering around going, "Yay for dead babies!" But, to be blunt, a woman is more important than anything that may come from her from one sexual encounter. I love kids, but I value a woman's choice and future more than a fetus's.

Bush made it perfectly clear that he would appoint Justices to the Supreme Court that would overturn Roe. He said, did it and now it will happen within a few years. And the millions of women in the red states that voted for Bush can hope and pray that their daughters do not end up at the hands of an unqualified abortion provider in a back alley in Toledo!

This is what Bush/Rove wanted all along: an endless civil war in the legislatures and the courts, pitting "abortion opponents" against "choice activists." Court battles and and legislative initiatives in 50 states could last dozens or hundreds of years.
Meanwhile, the Republican party will continue to take advantage of the distraction and go on robbing us blind.
And rich straight men will go on doing what they have always loved doing best: controlling the uteruses of poor women.

Here's how the minds of the South Dakota lawmakers obsess on controlling women's uteruses and vaginas, minds and emotions. The South Dakota lawmakers are barbarians. From time.com:
In other words, a woman presenting herself to an emergency room immediately after a rape, Hunt says, would be able to use emergency contraception; the trick is that she has to do within the first few days after the assault, before any test can determine whether she was pregnant in the first place. The lawmakers concluded that it’s OK for a rape victim to have an abortion, so long as she doesn’t know for certain that she’s doing it.

Am I the only one that really sees from hypocrisy in the one exception of peforming an abortion in saving a woman's life.
If the Religious Right does indeed believe that abortion is murder - and that we shouldn't mess with "God's Will - then shouldn't the logical conclusion be that there should be NO exceptions whatsoever?
...Since the mother's life is in God's hands?
...and it's all God's will whether she lives, dies, gives birth to a child that's a product of rape and/or incest?
I am pro-choice, and I don't think that anyone likes the idea of abortion, but it's her body, her choice.
I suppose technology will eventually reach the point when a fetus can be removed from the womb, cyro-frozen, and then stored for eternity. Isn't that a horrifying thought!
