s.d. governor signs abortion ban into law

what kills me is my 14 year old cousin is a self proclaimed republican because of Abortion mainly. I tried to talk to her to get her to tell me what she believes and tell her what I believe. I think I wore her down a bit, not to the point of her being pro choice, but to her seeing that it's not all black and white.

And I agree with what has been said in this thread. No one is all YAY abortion lets kill a bunch of babies for the fun of it...or lets have all the sex we want because hey we have abortions to fix it later. I don't think that's the mentality of most people when it comes to this issue. What I do see is a very painful choice to either carry the child to term or abort it. It's not an easy choice for any woman to make and I don't envy those woman put in that posistion.

And to all the right wingers saying "Well just give it up for adoption", yeah because that's a great option, over run our foster homes and orphanages with more children that no one will take care of. Our orphanages are over crowded as it is, and with the stringent adoption laws, more and more people are going over seas to adopt...isn't that great we're outsourcing adopting kids now! They need to be strict on who to give a child to, but not as strict as they are right now. What's wrong with giving it to a loving single parent or same sex couple who will love and protect that child instead of keeping them cramped with many other kids who just get tossed on their own when they turn 18.

again I'm on my soap box (preaching to the converted most likely), see what happens with too much caffeine, trying to avoid work and a subject I feel passionate about.

South Dakota's New Logo

So many people have been lax for so long. Too many people seem to believe that Roe is untouchable and that laws like this would never pass. Now we have our proof.

My parents are staunch republicans, but very pro-choice. We would have long bitter arguments about how they could vote for someone who has stated their intention to get Roe overturned....and they both always said, "Roe will never get overturned, it's never going to happen, I am not going to vote Dem just on the basis of abortion." Well.....this is one instance where I didn't want to be proven right, but it looks like we're getting there.

Why am I not suprised to find my state (KY) on that list...I think I'm gonna move to a blue state and fast! I can't take this anymore.

At least my county (by like a very slim margin) was blue, too bad the rest of the state voted red...*sighs*

Thinking moving up towards my relatives in Philly isn't such a bad idea...

Thanks for the link PalJoey, will check that out more in depth when I get home. I'm all for helping out in any small way with this cause. It's just sad that we have to fight in the first place when common sense would say that overturning RvW is not a good idea...but I will do my part in helping to preserve what should be a basic human right!

The NYTimes also reported that South Dakota is willing to squander state money engaging in costly lititgation that will go on for some time, as this case makes it through the courts, appeals, and possibly the Supreme Court.

Thanks for the link, PJ. I'll make sure I'll pass it around to everyone I know in the US.

Also, here's something I found interesting:

"The US trend towards new anti-abortion laws runs counter to moves in the rest of the world. According to a report published by the centre, since 1995 15 countries have passed laws making abortion legal under more circumstances while only five - including the US - have taken steps to make abortion illegal or more difficult to obtain.

The African states of Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Guinea and Mali have relaxed some of the world's most restrictive abortion laws to recognise as grounds for abortion saving a woman's life and protecting her health in cases of rape, incest, and foetal impairment.

Nepal lifted its prohibition in 2002, when the procedure was made legal without restriction during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and thereafter where a woman's health was at risk.

Meanwhile, laws restricting abortions have been passed in El Salvador, Hungary, Poland and the Russian Federation, as well as the US."

This is the way I think the law should be in America.
