I am glad with the jury's verdict and the judge's sentencing. It's too bad it'll be tied up for years in appeals and such. They could put him in with the prison populaton and be done with it - he wouldn't last very long. I know a lot of people don't agree with the decision and that he should get a life sentence, but that's just what Laci and her baby DON'T get to have - a life. Why should he?

I think he gets off easy....

I'd much rather see him spend life in prison without the possibility of parole and be bubba's b*tch for the rest of his days.

I am opposed to the death penalty. Killng is killing, whether it's done on a one man rampage or as governmentally sanctioned punishment. And in a country that professes that separation of Church and State exists, holding up the old "eye for an eye" rationale from the Bible just doesn't quite make the case for capital punishment.

And although I've said this more than once in this very thread, what especially offends me is that people have become invested in this particular case because it has been fed to us by the media as entertainment. It has little to do with justice being handed out in a fair and impartial manner. It's more like the culmination of a sporting event, Team Laci vs. Team Scott. Scott is an arrogant bastard who is probably guilty and is easy to hate. Laci made a very attractive victim, being pretty, popular, AND pregnant.

Several days ago in Jersey City, a Hispanic woman's body parts were found stuffed in the wall in various rooms of her house. Her head was in a bowling ball bag. Her husband is accused of the crime. Where is the national news coverage of *this* crime?

Media circus trials invariably display the American judicial system in a very unsavory light...and don't do much to make the American public seem very enlightened either.

Silly girl!

The media doesn't care about brown people unless they've played a major league sport!

I, too, am opposed to the death penalty and see no reason in rejoicing this decision.

Robbie-kins, you and I have been through this argument before, so I won't get into it other than to say, I hope they whack him and quick.

For the Bible thumpers, "An eye for an eye" is Old Testament thinking. Jesus teaches to "Turn the other cheek." That is what the New Testament is all about. That is if you believe in all that mumbo-jumbo. I am against the death penalty also but I also believe that Corine DOES look like Lacy, so what do I know.

No need to rehash. We all have our own personal feelings.

And speaking of personal feelings, what do you all think of my new icon? It's a chicken hawk. I thought it would be appropriate in this board as of late!

I have long been an opponent of the death penalty on every level. I find it an immoral action of the state. It is also disgusting how it is administered in a clinical manner as to mask its brutality.

Society has evolved to the point where our standards of decency should have rendered it unconstitutional as “cruel and unusual” under the 8th Amendment. The recent decision by the Supreme Court was a breath of fresh air on this issue.

I also do not think that in the end the family of Laci will find peace in his execution. When they leave his execution, Laci will still no longer be with them.

Who cares, one two bzzzt. It's over.

It's the public de-wigging and forced face-scubbing of Michael Jackson that people should be looking forward to.

thank you Jwei, as a California resident I agree....I would rather my tax dollars go for school library funding than keeping this jerk alive.
And......I am not for the death penalty, however in this case, I am.

See, El, that's what I don't understand. You say that you are not for the death penalty. But in *this* case you are... What makes this particular crime more heinous than a hundred others? The media made people care about this story because it sold papers and raised TV ratings.

Sorry, but this is driving me nuts...

FOR THE LAST TIME...

IT COSTS MORE TO PUT A PRISONER TO DEATH THAN TO KEEP THEM ALIVE.

Just so we're all clear!

CostumeMistress is right, by the way.

Anyone seen "The Thin Blue Line?"

Secondly, I believe SueElleen said it, but again, for Christians, eye for an eye is generally "overruled" by "turn the other cheek," and "an eye for an eye" properly understood is a limit on punishment, not a recommendation.

I am opposed to the death penalty on religious, philosophical, and realistic/practical grounds. (I just spent three weeks discussing this wrote a 10-page paper on this for my philosophy class, so bear with me while I try to make my argument in a shorter amount of time....)

Practically, the death penalty has never been established as a better deterrent than life in prison w/out parole. It has been proven that the best deterrents are swift punishments, which the death penalty is anything but. Also, though in this case, I'm fairly certain Peterson is guilty, the chance of innocent people being executed for me means that I don't want the justice system to have that power--ever. Also, the discrimination factor makes me want the death penalty abolished.

Philosophically, I feel it is wrong that any person or group of persons have dominion over another in such a way as to violate the basic right to life. Okay, so we say that Scott took away Lacy and her child's life and for that he deserves to die. I don't argue that he shouldn't be punished. Hell, I think the only correct way to respond is to punish. Just by virtue of his actions, it is only right to punish. If we don't set limits to our actions as a society, then there what kind of moral society do we live in. But who are we to say that some killing is okay and some isn't? Human beings have intrinsic value. No matter where you argue that from (socially, religiously, philosophically, whatever) most people agree that humans have intrinsic value just because they're human. I find it completely unjustified that a human institution (and a very fallible one at that) have the right to violate the fundamental right to life.

I don't really feel it appropriate at this time to argue from a religious perspective (plus I'm trying to write a religion paper at the moment and I really need to get back to it) but I may choose to later.
