Posted: 12/14/04 at 10:55amI believe in God and more over, I believe that Scott Peterson should be punished for what he did. There are times that I think the death penalty is wrong, but sometimes, I believe it's the only alternative. What he did was wrong. To just let him sit in jail, be fed by our hard earned tax dollars, he learns nothing and nothing is learned. That's why there are so many people in jail. They feel that no matter what they do, the worse thing that'll happen in they'll land in jail. The system and the cycle need to stop and have people know, when you do something wrong, you get a harsh punishment befitting the crime. No, it doesn't sound civilized, but then, what the heck is civilized? Is civilized hundreds and thousands of people being stuck in traffic to work in jobs they don't like? Is being civilized allowing children to go hungry? There's going to be something wrong with everything. Why not make a situation right and let him go. No, it won't bring back Laci and Connor and it's not an easy decision. But I don't think it's right to let him live when he's caused so much hurt and destruction.

I'm all in favor of letting the terminally ill go on crime and murder sprees. Everything from holding up the local convenience store to letting that pesky spouse, kid, partner or in-law know EXACTLY what you think about them, to just letting it rip in a crowded school or McDonalds.
I mean, so what if they get the death penalty - After all, they're gonna die ANYWAY!

Posted: 12/14/04 at 11:44amthe thing with the death penalty is that the whole process takes so damn long and, in most cases, winds up costing the taxpayers more than if the person were just thrown in gen pop for life. it's expensive keeping someone in their own private Death Row cell for 20 or 30 years. I'm all for the death penalty, which people always seem surprised at for some reason, but I think it's just a waste of money the way it's done in this country. Being civilized has nothing to do with it. Humans are only as civilized as nature and their finacial situations allow them to be. If we continue overpopulating the way we are, we'll see how civilized nature is when it finds a way to balance everything out again. As far as how this relates to Peterson, I think they should crucify him... upside down... on fire... in public.

I truly believe Scott is guilty. There is reasonable doubt, however and I think they should have gone for life in prison with no chance of parole. It would have been fitting for Scott, who so wanted his freedom, to face his life in prison without any chance of being released (and date). I must say that Laci's beautiful charismatic smile always touches my heart when I see her picture. I am for the death penalty but I not in this case.

(BTW, I'm surprised that nobody has posted on the Ammon-Pelosi muder case. The Peterson case was lurid and tragic, but I thought the former case was actually JUICY)

wouldn't it be more fun to tie him up with barbed wire, flay his penis into ribbons with a rusty razor blade, then mist it with vinegar before sprinkling it with salt?
Just a thought.

Is that your inmate buddies plan once he shares your jailyard?
(Surely flaying him WITH the barb wire would be more fun.)

Posted: 3/16/05 at 2:35pmShame. I'll never understand how the government can kill someone and turn around and say it's wrong. Life in prison is a much more appropriate sentence.

I suppose they'd argue "an eye for an eye", which I've got really mixed feelings about. While his crime is heinous, I do think that there are other far worse sex offenders and killers who deserve this sentence more than Scott does.
Life in prison may be a more appropriate sentence for him but only because those inmates are going to have a field day with Scott. Death almost seems like mercy.

Posted: 3/16/05 at 2:40pmI go back and forth on this issue....my next door neighbor in AZ was murdered by her husband as well as their 5 yr old daughter....He has been on death row now for about 16 years....I wonder if they will ever do it....I wonder what is worse...solitary confinment for the rest of their life, so they can think about what they did or just shoot the bastards!
#72re: scott peterson gets death penalty recommendation
Posted: 3/16/05 at 2:41pmI have to say that I don't think the death penalty is appropriate for any case. It's something I'm adamantly opposed to.
#73re: scott peterson gets death penalty recommendation
Posted: 3/16/05 at 2:46pmmy biggest problem with the death penalty is that it's not done either in public or on television (pay per view to benefit schools and or to subsidize prisons?). i think that the deterrent value of the act is lost completely when it's done in private.

I think solitary confinement could be worse. Keep a guy in a 6x8 cell for the rest of his life, that's a helluva punishment!
The issue I have with the death penalty is I don't know where we would draw the line. Would all murderers by default be sentenced to death? Only certain ones? What standards would be hold them to? Not to mention what this would mean for those who are actually innocent. I can't say I'm entirely opposed to the death penalty - I hate to think that my tax dollars (if I were an American) would be paying for some schmuck to stay in maximum security until the end of his days, plus there are some criminals who just don't get it, and deserve a stronger punishment than wasting away in jail. I just don't see how we can set up any sentencing guidelines that will do justice to both the victims and the offender, while acknowledging the heinous nature of a lot of crimes. I'm really on the fence.
Damn Libra curse.
