And, if so, what?

I know people say that he has black fans, too, but do you think that him doing what he does is helping to patch up the divide between gay white people and gay black people/black people in general?

I don't have that much of a problem with him doing his other characters, offensive though they may be, but I think blackface is where you have to draw the line and take a stand.

Why should anything be 'done'? He obviously has an audience. It's a person's choice to see him or not.

This sounds like controversy over nothing. Why is black face so offensive? It's been happening for years! If you don't like her, fine, don't pay attention to her, but it's not up to you to decide what she can do.

Anyway, I'd rather watch Sparkle than Shirley Q.

"it's not up to you to decide what she can do."

No, it's not, but there are black people who feel that the fact that it's not highlighted within the gay community as something that's offensive is an example of how out of touch some gay white people are with the black community. I don't think posing the question is a bad thing.

I was introduced to Liquor by a black gay man. The only people I've ever seen outraged or offended by her are white people. It's notable that a man is likely to be Oscar nominated for doing blackface.

If the intention is to offend or discriminate against people of color, then I could agree with the outrage. Otherwise, it's your decision whether or not to buy a ticket.

I am out of the loop on this one. Have never heard of this person or his "character". Just went and looked at some clips and watched a CNN report on him. I am kind of out to lunch on this. I do think that he slightly crosses the line. Fred Armison was mentioned regarding his Obama impersonation. I agree that he is impersonating a person and not a segment of a certain race. As jrb said, "..it is your decision wheter to buy a ticket or not". I don't think I will be buying a ticket to see this man.

Shirley Q once had a cd out of all the SEC fight songs that was hilarious.....

Virtually, everything of Shirley Q's is hysterical.
Betty Butterfield is also extremely funny, especially if you are Southern.

I still don't understand why a white pretending to be black is horribly offensive when a man pretending to be a woman is hysterical.

Is that a joke?

And Jerby, there is zero equivocation between Tropic Thunder and Shirley Q Liquor. Never once does Downy mention Lemonjello or Oranjello.

Don Imus wasn't trying to offend when he said "nappy headed hos."

I'm sure there are black people who think she's funny. I've never met one, but every time a thread about Shirley Q pops up, they are mentioned, so I guess they are out there.

So.. a straight man who made his comedy on prancing around with an ascot, while clutching his pearls and talking endlessly about butt sex would also be hilarious?

"The only people I've ever seen outraged or offended by her are white people."

You have to be smarter than this. You don't think there are black people who are offended by a white guy performing in blackface?

This reminds me of when straight people say "The only people I see getting offended about people saying 'that's so gay' are straight people." Even if that's true, it's seems like they're lying to themselves to not think that there are gay people who are offended by it.

Did Shirley take a stance on Prop 8? THAT would have been something to see.

i think "days without gays until shirley q. liquor/charles knipps is either taken off the public airways and publicly flogged or shot and killed by a firing squad comprised of angry gay midgets armed with rifles that are taller than they are for his heinous offense to blacks, gays, jews, dogs and marmosets" is probably the way to go.

Sorry, I was busy working on material for you new comedy character, Faggy McQueen.

You know, I was kidding up there when I mentioned Prop 8, but the more the more I think about it, who better to reach out to the black community on gay rights issues? If black people love Shirley so much, imagine the effect she could have!

I think "Faggy McQueen" is the name of the guy who flirted with Corine's new boyfriend.

I think papa's gay character would be a bit butcher- a Ben Dover type.

Ben Dover won't be as funny as Faggy McQueen. With Faggy, he'll be much more able to take every gay stereotype you can think of and present it as a loving homage to the nelly queens who raised him.
