My sister is 47, 5'10", 130 and has had two kids. She's a pole with a slight abdomen (from said children). She's an 8 top and a 10 bottom. Full figured, she ain't.
Yes...for models, size 10 is full figured. A simply gorgeous friend was a size 10 and was party of Ford's full-figured platoon. But she wasn't big enough to model the full-figured sizes that they market to American women. However, she was the perfect size to do a great deal of modeling for many European publications (the Nordic countries and Germany).
"size 10 is absolutely full figured. But there is nothing wrong with that though. It's simply a term..."full figured". I don't see that as a negative connotation, at all."
"Full-figured" is a PC term for "fat." Should it be? No, but it often is. This is unfortunate, because there are lots of women who are very curvy, or very muscular, who are definately not fat, but are made to feel that way because they are not a size 4. I think it's rather ignorant to tell those gals to "put down the Ho Ho's and eat an apple," when there are many reasons that a woman can be a size 10 - childbirth changing the body proportions (my mother is size 10 in pants because of a small pooch from three children, but has svelte legs that most models would kill for), a very muscular body build (I have my father's thighs, so I would know), etc.
Now, will I be a size 2? NEVER! But I have very strong legs and shoulders, a DD cup size, and a boyfriend who thinks that all that is a gorgeous combination. I say, hooray for this body!
and you have to remember it's all relative to height, frame/bone structure, muscle vs. fat, etc. as well.
The term "full-figured" is misleading and has stigma attached to it. Size 10 on a model (usually someone over 5'9" with a small to medium frame) is going to look curvy-YES-but "fat" "frumpy" "unhealthy"-NO-which are words often associated with "full-figured" in the general consciousness.
I know people who are 5'9"-6" and size 0-2 who are JUST AS HEALTHY as people who are that height and a size 10. That's where frame comes in.
Not all models are starving themselves.
Actually I remember one season of America's Next Top Model there was a "plus-size" woman who was a SIZE 6! I was like, "um...what now?" but she didn't look like a model frankly lol...she looked like a housewife (not due to her size but she personified "mom"). And she left the show on the first day because it went against her morals to pose nude.
It is upsetting though when actors feel the need to be rail thin if that isn't their natural body type. I heard Marcia Cross said in an interview once (I think on Leno? But I'm not sure about that) that it was her job not to eat, that's what she's paid for. That's really sad!
So I guess my point is; healthy bodies come in all sizes, and whether society labels it "full-figured" or "plus-sized" isn't always a bad thing, just as falling into a size 0 isn't always a bad thing either.
sizes in the '50's were different. i have something of my mothers that says it's a 12, but in modern day sizes it is about an 8. marilyn was much smaller than a modern day 12. i have seen her costumes on forms in a costume museum and while she tended to fluctuate a bit she was not as big overall as say, sophia loren who is a size 12 and GORGEOUS.

I remember in all those Rock Hudson/Doris Day type movies in the late 50's and early 60's, a really hot, sexy woman was usually described as being a perfect Size Ten.
The fashion industry lives in their own world-their perception of size has nothing to do with reality. It's sad that they have and still are ruining so many young girls' lives. I feel fortunate that I never care what anyone else says about what size I should be. If I'm comfortable and healthy, I'm fine. It's only when I feel uncomfortable with myself that I take off a few! OK, rant over. I have to admit that clothes look better on a hanger, though, so if you want to be a hanger that badly, be my guest!
la loren has said, "everything i have i owe to pasta." ooh lala.
Thanks for this thread, y'all.
Have you seen those commercials on TV for NutriSystem? This skinny girl gets on there and talks about how great this diet plan is and how she went on the plan and lost all this weight and went all the way down from size 10 to size 4. Every time I see it I want to throw something through the TV screen.

I hate the ads where they have someone saying, "I lost 20 lbs. and went from a size 12 to a size 4!" or something like that. Even if you figure that they gained muscle, and muscle weighs more than fat, 20 lbs. does not drop you 4 dress sizes!
I completely agree that size is relative--I have a friend who is fairly big-boned. She will never be a tiny girl, but she is very healthy and muscular. I have another friend who small boned and has always been super skinny. She's never worked out, nor does she eat healthy.
And keep in mind that size partly has to do with where you shop. I'm fairly consistently an 8, but there are some stores that I'm a 6, and some that I'm a 10.
Ouch. I'm a 10 and while I haven't felt skinny for years, I don't quite feel fat either. I suppose a lot of the world would like to be a smaller size than they are, but that's just life.
Oh how I miss the olden days where being big meant you had enough money to eat.
Last night on a "Everybody loves Raymond" episode, Ray made a comment to Debra like "Why do you worry about your weight? You're like what, 140?" And everyone gasped and made this huge deal about it and the rest of the episode was "I do NOT weigh 140!" For a lot of heights, 140 is not all that much to weigh. The episode drove me nuts.
JL, that reminds me of that constant running "joke" on Will and Grace about how Grace supposedly eats all the junk food in sight. Please - she is UNDERweight. Makes me sick.
Me too, Rath. The interesting thing about Messing is is that when she was a NY stage actress, she was a size 8! Now, she can't be any bigger than a size 2!
We actually discussed this in my Psychology class a month or two ago. Hispanic and African American women are more likely to be comfortable with being average to larger sized (8-16, usually) than Caucasian women because the men of their respective races actually prefer curves to rails.
Now, one of my best friends is 5'6" and weighs about 150 (size 10-ish), and she's constantly being told what a hot body she has. It's all a matter of having the right proportions, not the right waist size.
It's all relative, but sad. It sucks that so many girls are forced to believe that being a size 10 is "full-figured"...while that may be true, the stigma attached to the term "full-figured" is not a good one. However, many of the guys I've talked to assure me that a curvy girl is more attractive than a thin one. I think it's more the women who think that we need to be size 2's to look good...guys couldn't care less.
Look at Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff. They used to be gorgeous, and now they look like crack-whores. Well, I guess at least one of them is, but that's beside the point.
Besides, sizes vary. My mother is naturally thin with no chest, slim hips, and is an inch shorter than me (5'8 ), but wears a size larger than I do, despite that my boobs are a lot bigger and my hips are, too. It all depends on where you shop.

With that, I'm going to go eat my cookie dough.
And cookies.
And pizza.
Diet Coke, please. I'm watching my weight.
(Oh, and I'd like whipped cream on my ice cream. But no sprinkles. I don't need those calories)

Hey, in ancient Hawaii they liked them the bigger the better. We are talking Queeen Kaahumanu of some 400 pounds. So, it's like, a cultural thing. In Hawaii, there's still a lot of fondness toward BIG women.
Frankly if you are obsessed with size or age or whatever, you are not seeing or knowing the spirit of that person.
Beauty should eminate from the spirit within...

I should be such a plus size! This whole model body image thing is nothing but a crock! Here I am fighting for my life being morbidly obese and a model wants to vomit up her lunch of a tic tac so she avoid being a plus size 10. In this country, we are so obcessed with size. What about one's health and well-being? I have had many people say to me that they can't to see me skinny and sexy after surgery. Hell, I am sexy now! I just want to live and get my health and quality of life back.
