PS Bruce had knee surgery so give him a break!
If knee surgery makes him incapable of writing tolerable 10-second intros, then he can't handle the entire show.
Tom Hanks is a great choice!
Tom is my favorite film star! I also adore George Clooney and he could hold every womans attention. I know I would watch Clooney for the entire night.

We all thought John Stewart was pretty funny tonight. Certainly a w hole lot better than he was 2 years ago.
Billy Crystal was the best. I hate to say it, but Bob Hope was even better than any of the more recent hosts.
I'd like Ellen to come back. She wasn't great, but I think that was largely due to nerves, which I hope would be less of a problem next time around, and her delivery is always fantastic.
John Stewart was better than he was the first time... and that's not saying much AT ALL.
He landed a couple of his political jokes. Not hard to do in over three hours of broadcast. His Hollywood jokes TANKED.
The best host was Johnny Carson, which is why he did it more often than anyone else, with Bob Hope a close second.
And YES, we should expect them to be great. It's the biggest gig for a host all year. They pay really well, and you're seen by around a billion people worldwide.
We should expect the best there is. Not "passable."
I'm not even sure I would call John Stewart "passable." He didn't suck, but he wasn't good either.
Stewart bored me, and he bored my kids even more. I'd like to see Tina Fey be given a chance, or Ellen would be a good choice.
Agree with B12B - Johnny Carson set the bar so high, everyone else pales by comparison.
Tom Hanks isn't a bad suggestion. I would love to see them do away with the huge opening bits and the standup comedy routines. Go back to honoring Hollywood for what they do and forget all this other nonsense. If they cut all the idiotic chatter and lame jokes they'd have more time for clips and to allow people a couple of minutes for their thank you's. I really hate listening to a Stewart or Crystal or any of them go on and on and then watch them shove the winners out of the way in order to close up at 11:00.
And I'll repeat what I said on another thread - the musical numbers were awful. ALL of them. The only film I saw that was represented by the music was Enchanted. I thought the songs as presented in the film were delightful but they even turned me off last night. I was not familiar with the others and I thought that they were just awful. None of them would make me want to go and see those films. In each case I'd rather see a clip from the actual film showing the song being performed. In the cases where there was not an actual performance to see, use a montage of clips with the ORIGINAL recording playing over them. I honestly think this would cut even more time and would be a lot more entertaining.
This is an aside. The ratings were in the tank projected to reach an all time low for the telecast.
I'm putting in a vote for Amanda Lepore, although I can't actually imagine her wearing anything for the event.
Whoopi was my fav. Can she even host again? Wasn't she banned or something?
Margaret Cho
billy crystal, i never get tired of him.
i was thinking conan too, but then i again, im not sure if he would do well or not. it would be entertaining to see though
"I was probably the only person who adored Jon Stewart tonight."
No, I did. His opening monologue was great.
I like the Tina Fey idea, though.
Bring back Chris Rock!!! I want to see him and Sean Penn duke it out.
Seriously, Whoopi was great but I don't know who she pissed off because she wasn't included in their montage of hosts.
Steve Martin was great. I have a wonderful tape of greatest Oscar moments and Johnny Carson was the coolest of them all.
Colbert, Conan, Tina Fey, or Dave Chapelle.
Maybe Tina or Tom Hanks.

Eddie Izzard - cause he's so d__n funny!!!!!! Plus, he could definitely make a fashion statement!
"Doesn't Bruce Vilanch write the jokes for Billy, Goldberg and Williams? I would rather watch it with him doing it."
No, I'm almost positive that they and their own writers write the jokes. At least I know that Stewart didn't use Vilanch. He and his writers wrote his material.
Vilanch and a team, on the other hand, write all of the incredibly lame lines for the presenters. So....no thank you....
I think kathy Griffin could do a marvelous job! The only problem would be she'd have to clean up her language.
ABC wouldn't let Kathy Griffith within a fifty mile radius of a live show as popular as the Oscars.
I think Fey is really the best choice though she is one of those anti-"Hollywood" actresses (much like Jon Stewart) who may just feel awkward hosting the event. Her writing would be so incredibly sharp, witty, and out of the world though, plus she is used to writing jokes about actors and show business in general (if you haven't seen 30 ROCK, shame on you!).
Please no Chris Rock, I absolutely hated him as a host.
Just get Meryl Streep. She's funny, classy, and everybody loves her.
Jonathan Ross.
