During the "The Musical is Back" number when Beyonce sang (well, lipsynched) the line from "I Don't Know How to Love Him" I had a brief vision. Am I the only one that wouldn't mind seeing a remake of JCSS with her as Mary Magdalene?
Commence the flaming.

Posted: 2/23/09 at 9:28amI wouldn't mind having Beyonce record I Don't Know How To Love Him, but I have no desire to see her in a remake of JCS. BTW, I don't think there is any need to remake JCS. Also, I think she'd crucify Everything's Alright.

A number composed almost entirely of show tunes has nothing to do with Broadway? Okay.
And, I was being facetious.
But, I did think the number was over-the-top and kind of a mess.

Posted: 2/23/09 at 10:11amIt was a little messy. When it was over, we all said "what was that???"

HAHAHA Jane, I literally had the exact same reaction! After that number I turned to my friend and said "What just happened?"

Horrific. Every other "genre" tribute featured scenes and moments from the films and worked well. It's supposed to be a tribute to the FILMS- let's see 'em. I'd much rather see Gene Kelly Sing in the rain that Hugh Jackman lip sync on the stage.
And what musical was "At Last" from?

I agree with you shamey. What an overly busy and just generally headache inducing mess.

Where as I think Beyonce' has talent she is just too OVEREXPOSED right now! I need a break!
And ditto Queen Latifah for a lovely version of "I'll Be Seeing You". Wouldn't mind seeing her on Broadway anytime soon.

The musical numbers last night really made me miss people like Michael Bennett and Bob Fosse who knew how make audiences sit up and pay attention.

Queen Latifah's song needed to be transposed down a step or two, and the whole "In Memoriam" montage was ruined for TV viewers because they kept switching to a long shot to include Latifah as well as the screen - making it impossible to see who was being depicted.
I'm sure it looked good to the folks actually in the theatre, but it sucked for the TV audience.
