Social Calls at the Gym...Why?
#1Social Calls at the Gym...Why?
Posted: 4/24/07 at 10:41pmCan someone explain why in the world you would take a social call while you’re working out? More and more at the gym I’m seeing people stopping their workouts to answer their cell phones and talk, and I don’t mean emergency calls either. Umm.. surely you can turn off the phone for the duration of your workout. Mine stays in the locker, because I’m there to workout. It’s so annoying when I’m on the elliptical and I’ve reached the point where I can just shut my eyes and tune everything out and keep my legs and arms pumping and all of a sudden I hear “YEAH OMIGOD WORKED SUCKED TODAY”. Thanks a lot for bringing me out of my peaceful place idiot. I don’t expect a gym to be a library; I expect general chatter, and the sounds of guys playing basketball in the other room, but when someone starts screaming into her cell phone, that ruins the atmosphere.

I agree. I was on the treadmill one day and a woman a few machines down the line was jabbering non-stop the entire 45 minutes, while drinking a very large cappucino. I was flabbergasted.
NYSC now tries to restrict cell phone use on the floor, and in the one I go to they are fairly successful.

Posted: 4/24/07 at 11:13pmI have a workout buddy back home, and one week she was out of town, so she would call and talk to me while I worked out at our usual gym, while she worked out in the hotel gym. It worked nicely. Granted we go during a lull in the day.

Posted: 4/24/07 at 11:14pmWell, I find it annoying when someone is so loud you can hear the entire conversation. But, I talk to people on the phone when Im on the threadmill, it's just so boring to run, I usually listen to music or read magazines while doing it, but eventually I talk on my cell. Also in between excersices, it gets too dull if you don't stop for 5 mins and take a little break.

Posted: 4/24/07 at 11:47pmCell phone use is prohibited in my gym. They'll kick you out if you out if your phone rings while you're on the floor, let alone if you're talking on it. Cell phones need to be turned off or silenced before you enter the gym and need to remain in your locker -- but no talking on the phone in the locker room either. You have to leave the gym to take or make a call. I was there once when a guy's phone started ringing -- and he answered it and got all chatty. All these muscle men got really bitchy at him and he freaked out and left.

Same here Foster! It really intimidated me.
What about music guys? Do you listen to music when you work out? At least that will tune them out.

Posted: 4/25/07 at 12:53ammy gym banned cell phones too! mostly because of creepy people taking pictures, but still its a great rule and more gyms should do it...

Posted: 4/25/07 at 1:05amI listened to music when I first started last year, but now I can do it without.

Posted: 4/25/07 at 1:50amPeople taking calls at the gym doesn't bother me nearly as much as people taking calls when they're in public bathrooms. I just do not get that. Are some people so dependent on those damn things that they can't wait until they're out of the crapper to answer it?

Can someone explain why in the world you would take a social call while you’re working out?
Because it's my prerogative, my cell phone, my workout and my business!
More and more at the gym I’m seeing people stopping their workouts to answer their cell phones and talk, and I don’t mean emergency calls either.
So? Don't you know you can't control what people are going to say or do. It's not *your* problem. Again, go on about your business.
Umm.. surely you can turn off the phone for the duration of your workout.
You don't know why a person chooses to carry their cell phone and keep it on while they are working out. Again, mind your business!
Mine stays in the locker, because I’m there to workout.
Well good for you! That doesn't necessarily mean that those who choose to carry their cellphones while working out aren't their to workout either. They may have a valid reason for doing so. How very presumptious of you!
It’s so annoying when I’m on the elliptical and I’ve reached the point where I can just shut my eyes and tune everything out and keep my legs and arms pumping and all of a sudden I hear “YEAH OMIGOD WORKED SUCKED TODAY”. While I don't agree people should be yelling and carrying on on their cell phone you just can't predict what's going to happen so my advice to you is this: Get an iPOD shuffle and you won't have worry about hearing anything but your workout music which will possibly motivate you to a better workout. P.S.: They're only $79 bucks and fit up to 250 songs which is MORE than enough for an average workout at the gym. See? Problem solved! Stop whining and have a nice workout!

Posted: 4/25/07 at 7:55amIt's a never ending source of amusement for me the amount of self-importance people display. Is it really that important to be available 24/7? Maybe if you're a doctor....

But you don't live everyone else's life, now do you? You don't know what's going on in other people's lives that maybe does require them to be available 24/7. It has nothing to do with self importance.
