And yet if he said he was GLAD he had to work and wasn't FORCED to spend time with his family, that would have been attacked too.

I'm all for responsibility and doing what ya gotta. But, I don't think it's necessary to take this kid's sadness at spending Thanksgiving behind a counter instead of with his family as evidence that he's a slacker who is responsible for the downfall of society.

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

I would have been happy to discuss even one of my issues being addressed. I didn't assume anything. I raised points based on what I read. The points were not addressed - and were unlikely to be - so I gave up.

And thank you, Best, for saying what I felt, but was unwilling or unable to give voice to.

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

Oh, I'm not an alarmist... but I don't stick my head in the sand, either. I can see what's happening, slowly and steadily... and it's not good.

I'm never the first one to cry, "the sky is falling."

And I admit that it didn't start with this current generation. My own generation was a part of the "entitlement" as well... but not to such an extreme or degree of "sloth"... our parents (many of them) were born in the Great Depression or WWII, we were raised with an understanding of what came before us, yet a silver spoon with the American flag was placed in our plump mouths... and it was the Baby Boomers that first tasted "entitlement."

And it's been downhill ever since. My generation is now the parents... and all they've managed to do is pass on the sense of entitlement, and amplify it to grotesque (and dangerous) proportions.

Interesting... There's a thread on the Main Board about Patti LuPone's recent "rant" on her site about the general attitude of service providers (about a hotel she visited in SF) and the working force of our country...

...it ties directly in to this thread. I may not agree with the extreme to which she grandstands... but I know exactly where she's coming from.

"Oh, I'm not an alarmist... but I don't stick my head in the sand, either."

So, just because we didn't take willact4food's rant to heart (I believe he was being facetious in his first few posts) it means we're turning a blind eye to society's ills?

"I'm never the first one to cry, 'the sky is falling.'"

But you'll join others if/when they do?

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

"I believe he was being facetious in his first few posts"

I absolutely understand that possibility. And that, in and of itself, isn't that big a deal to me. I might still have had something to say in response, but not in the manner I did. As I said, a large part of why I reacted the way I did was the timing of the thread (Thanksgiving) - and I made that VERY clear.

All I got in response was to have my throat jumped down and to be called an ass.

You'll pardon me if I didn't immediately back up and apologize.

And I'll again point out that the points I tried to make regarding that first post - and what I thought it INDICATED - were never addressed.

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

I think it's ridiculous that my age is being blamed for my disdain towards working on Thanksgiving. It doesn't mean I'm less appreciative of my job. I'm thankful I have one. I just simply did not want to work on Thanksgiving? What the hell is the big deal? Once again, DG and others, you are blowing this thread WAY out of proportion.
#86

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

Willact - if your initial post had been something like, "I have to work Thanksgiving, and that sucks, cause now I can't spend it with my family," then that's what I would have responded to.

But it wasn't.

You just whined about having to work the job THAT YOU TOOK - which obviously comes with working on holidays - and then added snark and bitterness on top of it.

I haven't blown anything out of proportion, I have been in response mode this entire time - and have responded to exactly what you have said. And raised questions and issues that I have had as a result.

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

DG, so just because I took a job, I still can't be a little upset about working on a holiday? Suddenly, I have no rights to express how I feel?

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

Willact - I have said more than once that, of course, you have a right to feel what you feel. All I indicated was that perhaps you might consider the occassion upon which you were choosing to vent. This wasn't just any day of the year - and it was influencing my mind-set, if no one elses.

And you didn't take just any job, you took a job that historically involves weekend and holiday hours. Was this really not explained to you beforehand? Was it really a surprise that this was asked of you?

willact4food: Let this be a reminder to you. Next time you want to bitch/moan, make sure it's not on/about a holiday. Better yet, don't even post on these boards lest you offend someone.

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

SM2 - is that really what you took from that? I was being very specific, and you've completely generalized the sentiment.

And if we all didn't post for fear of offending someone, there would be nothing to read here.

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

Seems to me that Alfred2 has made many a beneficial comment to the thread. One just needs to comprehend the commentaries.

See, I didn't take willact's initial post as a bitch/moan so much for a "feel sorry for me I have to work a holiday, let's commiserate" ploy. It wasn't until he posted, "Wanna know what sucks more? I work Friday too..." that I realized he really was just bitching about a job that he certainly at some point must have wanted and willingly applied, just doesn't seem to want to perform.

Perhaps time online could be better spent finding a job where no public interaction is involved.

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

"Perhaps time online could be better spent finding a job where no public interaction is involved."

From what I'm able to discern, it better not involve much work of any kind.

OK, SM2, let me have it . . .

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

"SM2 - is that really what you took from that?"

Obviously, I was being sarcastic.

"I was being very specific, and you've completely generalized the sentiment."

Is it just that it was Thanksgiving (a day to be grateful) that pushed your buttons? So, come Christmas, if willact4food (or another young poster) has to work then too and grumbles about it, they won't have to worry about being admonished and lectured on the irresponsibility/entitlement of today's youth?

"OK, SM2, let me have it . . ."

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

SM2 - if someone starts whining at Christmas about having to work at a place that they know is open on Christmas - and obviously leads to them working - I can't guarantee that I'll keep my mouth shut. I swear, it's like listening to a bank teller complain about having to work on a Wednesday.

What exactly is the problem here? He posted his thoughts, and I have questioned them - with some very specific questions - which are STILL not addressed. The only thing I'm sensing in return is, "Why can't you just let him whine?"

If he wants to whine with no possibility of reaction, I might suggest a mirror instead of a public message board.

And, Diva, would you like me to have some of those peeled for you?

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

Some things are more appropriate for blogs than they are the OT board. At the very least, they belong in the banal thread.
