re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

as a former newspaper reporter who also worked a second job at a movie theatre to make ends meat, i NEVER had a holiday off. if i wasn't covering a reorganization meeting on new years day, i was working a memorial day parade, or interviewing people about the black friday shopping madness.

when it came time to actually have off from the newspaper, i was working at the movie theatre on thanksgiving day, christmas eve and day, easter, new years eve and day, etc.

the funny thing is, once i was in a position to quit my second job and in an editorial position where i didn't have to work holidays anymore, i volunteered with my crisis hotline group to work the phone lines, so that people with families and other loved ones could be with their relatives.

i was single at the time, and felt fortunate enough to spend some time with my family but more fortunate to reach out to those in need during the holidays when their problems seemed to magnify and they really needed someone to listen to them.

and, you know what, i would do it again in an instant. sure, it may be aggravating at the time to work on a holiday, but you'll be a better person for learning about responsibilty, sacrifice, and life.

"My boss wants to be a d*** which he is all the time anyway

We come in so he can let us off at noon. This way he can screw up our 4 day weekend. I have a long memory & do absolutely nothing extra for him from this point forward"

A post early in the thread by someone quite a bit older than the original poster. This post wasn't even addressed by all those jumping down the throat of wa4f. Why is a post like that okay? I found that one much more personally offensive, as it's by someone older who should know better.

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

willact4food: I know how you must have felt. I remember being in my first semester of college and being at home for the holidays working at the retail business of a relative. No one bothered to tell me that I was expected to work Christmas morning, a big deal at our house. Christmas morning it was a huge surprise for the store to call my house looking for me. Very difficult for me to handle, I went to work angry as a bull, and more so because I was completely blind-sighted by this turn of events. I arrived angry and after a few hours we closed for the afternoon. By then I was over it and in subsequent years of college, working on Christmas morning was no big thing. I'm sure you're over the anger and hurt of working on Thanksgiving by now. As for the thread don't bother to explain yourself any further. Most of us remember what it was like being your age, and understand how you may have felt.

Willact - pay me no mind. Just think of me as the Thanksgiving Grinch, barking at the moon like an old wounded animal. Thankfully, you have kind-hearted folks like Rath and Bulldog to reassure you that all is right in the world.

Nicely said, BB. I'm surprised at some of the people around here who either don't remember what it was like, or can't allow the youth here to feel their own feelings and experience what's still new to them.

I used to work Thanksgiving, and I was happy to get the double holiday pay.

You ARE getting holiday pay, WW4F?

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

I worked yesterday...I had to take a second job at American Eagle this semester and as the new girl, I got the Black Friday shaft. I did get a free scarf though. The thing that does suck, however, is that I have to do an overnight floor set on Christmas Eve. Until 3 a.m.

If this makes me an ungrateful li'l whippersnapper, so be it: Kimmy, that really sucks. Nobody should have to unpack and set up the day-after-Christmas sale crap overnight on Christmas Eve. I hope you're at least getting time and a half for it.

Yes, no one has mentioned the extra pay....

And try working display when they want everything changed overnightand you are the only one working. That was my LAST 'normal' job, ever.

There is no greater motivation for finishing college and earning a degree than working retail. I've also said that there is no other job on earth that could make Communism look good...

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

Wow, how does every thread end up in the imminent destruction of our society on this board?

I was under the impression that this was a board where people could post about their lives, and pretty much anything they wanted to. It didn't have to be turned into a full-out cat fight.

Not to mention that this thread has only contributed to my theory that this board is EXTREMELY ageist. You guys will snap at any younger poster for being "naive" and "ignorant" and "ungrateful" because of their youth. Yet, at times when adults have similar complaints, you stand up and applaud them or just ignore it like it's everyday. I think that's a tad bit unfair.

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

Lol thanks, Rath. I actually just got in from the good ol' AE, and today they trained me to fit prissy girls for bras! Oh, the unbearable joy.

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

Ew. Does every store that sells lingerie really need bra-fitters? I know my size and if I'm unsure, I just eyeball it. I don't like complete strangers feeling me up, and I'm sure it's no picnic for the fitters, either.

re: So, who actually has to work tomorrow?

Well, you certainly shouldn't just "eyeball it" when it comes to bras. An ill-fitting bra can cause a lot of problems. You should meausre your bra size very precisely.

On the flipside of that, there definitely don't need to be people whose job it is to fit bras for you. that's why they have charts in dressing rooms. I feel really bad for you, Kimmy! I will NEVER work in retail.

Someone has to do it. It's either that or showing up at 3AM on the morning of the 26th, which wouldn't be ideal for most people either.

This is retail. That's just the way it is. And if people can't handle it then I'd suggest finding a job in another field ASAP.

"There is no greater motivation for finishing college and earning a degree than working retail."

Unfortunately, the Bachelor Degree is not the be all end all. I thought it was. And then I graduated with my degree and had more student loan debt than my career could account for and now have to moonlight in the retail field in addition to my 40 hour/week "career" that I spent 5 years in college working towards.

I highly dobut you where anywhere near as wise and as mature as you are now 20 to 30 years ago. (I that dosen't offend you, I just assumed you were in your 40's)
I have NEVER met Cheyenne Jackson. I have never hung out with him in his dressing room, he did not tweet me, he never bought me a beverage, and he mostly certainly didn't tickle me. . .that is all.
