Posted: 7/24/07 at 12:44amIt's because the demand is inelastic- people "need" their coffee, and will pay whatever they have to.

Hopefully this will do something to boost the stock value. SBUX has dropped 20% this past year.

Posted: 7/24/07 at 1:07amI am...I used to schlep coffee for Starbucks too. I needed money recently so I sold almost all of my stock. If I had sold my shares one month earlier I would have had several hundred more dollars at my disposal.

Posted: 7/24/07 at 1:11amman that sucks. Well at least as I pay more for my iced coffee I'll know it's helping you in some very indirect way.

Yes! Thank you! You and all the other Starbucks addicts paid my rent and let me see a ton of Broadway shows over the last three years! And now I'm very happy to never have to set foot in a Starbucks again!
Okay...that's not totally true. After three years of free drinks it's hard to avoid the coffee addiction. I get headaches now when I don't have my daily dose.
(And when I started working there I hated coffee)
ETA I feel kind bad for the Baristas still working there. I've been through two price increases and it gets old when every customer you serve whines about the price increase. Or worse! They throw a little hissy fit and yell at the person ringing them up. What you don't see: when the Barista turns their back to you to make your drink they're saying, "If you don't like the price don't come in (bitch)." Sounds harsh, but it's true.

Posted: 7/24/07 at 8:15amI had no problem with Starbucks until I watched them making my iced coffee last year. They pour about 3 or 4 ounces of coffee into the cup then fill it with ice. It costs over $2. Now that's a ripoff, so, no I don't like the price and I don't go in.

Well, bully for you. Glad you're rich. 9 cents each time you go to Starbucks each time adds up.
If you go everyday for a year, that's $328!
Well, if you're on Jupiter, sure. But, here on Earth, it's only $32.85.

Ughhh those corner bodegas are DISGUSTING! The coffee is sludge.
And the carts on the street are even worse.
I only drink iced coffee, so when i go to Starbucks, I order an iced dopio in a large cup. 2 shots of espresso on ice - and I add skim milk from the bar.
$2.11 (I guess $2.20 starting next week). Still cheaper than iced coffee, and brewed right when you order it.

As a current barista, I'm most looking forward to the drive-thru customers in the coming weeks. They're hands down the rudest any way, and are going to be way more liklely to take the price increase out on me.
And of course, I always get stuck in the drive thru window. I guess all those years as a receptonist have given me good people skills or something.
Jane--beleive me, you wouldn't want much more of the iced coffee than that. It is increadibly concentrated, so all that ice is to help dilute it to the point that it is drinkable. Not to mention the fact that you can request "light ice" and we'll put more in.

Has Starbucks come out with some sort of hypnosis ray that forces you all into their stores? Did I miss something?
no one forces any of you to walk into Starbucks and buy their product.
The ARE a business and have a right to raise their prices whenever they choose.
last I remember Starbucks is not a necessity that without it you will die.
sheesh...if you don't want to pay it, don't go. But don't make them out to be the Evil Empire from the planet Caffiene.
They are a business
NOW, where IS my grande cappuchino with 2 splendas on the dry side?

If Al Gore were serving as President as he should be, this would never have happened!
Blame Bush! Halliburton controls Starbucks! Cheney is the evil empire!

" order an iced dopio in a large cup. 2 shots of espresso on ice - and I add skim milk from the bar."
If you have to resort to cheap trickery like that you can't afford to buy coffee out. You want a large iced latte, then order it-- and pay for it.

Uh, it has nothing to do with trickery. I want my coffee brewed when i order it- hence the espresso. And why exactly pay 2 more dollars for them to pour milk into the cup? That's just stupidity.
I understand ordering a hot latte, but I only drink it iced.
I can plenty afford to buy coffee out. I'm just not stupid.

Posted: 7/24/07 at 11:37amIt is all Loveforcheno's fault. She only pays for an espresso and uses a quart of the "free" milk at the side table. No wonder they are always empty when I go to get my SPLASH of milk for my coffee. And I am not totally being flip.

Hey, Sueleen, you should come to the Starbucks I work at--it's my job to keep all those milk containers nice and full, and I always do.
And they still treat me like crap.

Thanks Sueleen. It's like saying why pay for a sandwich? I'll just order some sliced turkey and then build my own with the "Free" bread on the table.
The Coffee is the cheap part- the cup, the ice, and especially the milk are all more expensive than that shoto of espresso. All those things have to be paid for.
I managed a Borders (With coffee bar) in the worst place on earth and was dumbfounded by the lengths people went to to leverage the system. We eventually had to take away the "Sample"" pot because people would whip out their 24 oz. travel mug and fill it up with "free" coffee. Moms would open the Skim Milk pitcher and empty it into their kid's sippy cup. And of course, the folks who can drop $200 on redecorating books can't possible afford their own artificial sweetener- it took precisely 3 days to realize that the Equal had to live behind the counter or we would go through a case of 5000 packets in a day or two. I did enjoy the customers who wouldn't even buy a drink but still come up and ask for "15 Sweet-n-lows, please!"
