i thought that the primal urge in animals is to mate in order to propogate the species. pheromones and all that work to elicit instinctual responses with the goal of reproduction. in humans the brain gets all involved.

Alright, I tried to keep out of it. I thought I hung up my professor's cap...but...well...here goes:

Uniq is not as unique as we all wish she were. She actually represents a lot of people in her views. And since 'most' Americans are against same-sex marriage, that means that opinion goes, right?

No. Sometimes, it's very possible that most Americans are WRONG. Flat-out, plain-old WRONG. They were wrong on slavery, wrong on interracial and interfaith marriages, wrong on flag-burning. JUST PLAIN WRONG. As Tony Kushner once put it, the world only spins forward. We will be citizens.

Uniq has every right to feel the way she does. But luckily, her feelings don't govern this land. The Constitution does. And though it may take time, the Constitution will come down on the side of providing equal citizenry for all.

hmmmm. Robbie J it is obvious that you have a one sided opinion about this topic and saying that I am not unique because Im not holding a gay pride flag proves that. Did you see anywhere in my post that I said I do not believe gays should be allowed to be married? In fact I was very outraged at the whole issue when it came up a few weeks ago. I even posted somewhere that was how I felt.

thanks for the articles, susie-q, but i mean actual studies by accredited sources. the netherlands zoo doesn't count. it's the freakin' netherlands. obviously the animals were stoned and thus their behavior can be excused as the result of the massive amounts of hallucinogens they are ingesting daily. i'll have to look into the books mentioned in the opther articles, but on a cursory glance, the definition of homosexuality as applied to the animals is pretty darn broad. i mean my hugging robbie could be construed as homosexual behavior if we were marmosets based on some of what they say. but i will try to open my mind and lok into it before denouncing it outright as hogwash.

Ok, in order to try and make sense of all this, I put all of Newyorkuniq's comments together on one page without all the other comments between and it still doesn't add up:

"Yes, but this is a chosen minority, not like a skin color."

"So the answer to your question is yes, I do know that people cannot 'choose' wheter or not to be gay."

This makes no sense at all, but then the explanation below doesn't help:

"To be gay you openly proclaim your sexuality to whoever you feel like telling."

No. To be gay is to be attracted to and/or have sex with partners of the same sex exclusively. Many people do not openly proclaim this for fears of discrimination and personal harm. Being gay is to be in the minority whether people know you are gay or not.

"Everyone has the right to an opinion and if mine offends you then I sorry there is not much I can do about it."

The statement you originally made was not a statement of opinion, but one that sounded more like a declaration of obvious fact. It's like saying, "Yes, but all Texans are stupid, it's not like California." And I'm still trying to figure out that apology. It's sounds a lot more like apathy.

And I apologize for butting in, but RobbieJ never said you had to hold a flag nor anything about your opinion on gay marriage. It wasn't your opinion we've been talking about, but your rationale behind the opinion. It was only the "chosen minority" remark that freaked everyone out. It's like saying you chose to be female.

I'm not so much angry as I am very sad. All I want is to live with the one person I love most in the world. If we were straight, we could've been together already, but statements like "chosen minority" (whatever your view of gay marriage), only fuel the fires of ignorance that prevent us from being treated as equals. Hopefully, Zapatero will uphold his promise to grant full marriage rights to gays in Spain. I'm ready to go at any time.
