Summer Getaways

The city has been so unbearably hot lately, I've completely begun to understand why people who have the resources to do so go away in the summer as often as they can. Out of curiosity, do many people here have a favorite summer vacation spot? Here in NYC, it seems like many escape to Fire Island, or the Jersey Shore, or Provincetown, or The Hamptons. In other parts of the country, where would your destinations be?
My parents are retired and live full-time at the Jersey Shore now, which is nice for me when I have time to visit, although I've only managed one weekend this summer so far. One is certainly better than none, though.

Wisconsin Dells! The crazy campy cheesy themed parks, attractions and resorts are mind-boggling. I love it so much. Where else can you ride go-carts through a giant Trojan Horse?

My family has a beach house in Dewey Beach, DE and I think it's the perfect vacation spot. It's getting a lot more attention & crowds in recent years, but it's generally pretty empty compared to its neighbor, Ocean City, MD. Especially on weekdays. It's about four hours from NYC, but it's an extremely simple trip (which is saying something coming from me...I'm horrible with directions). And it's just far enough that you feel like you've truly escaped NY. I love it...tons of fun bars, a really nice boardwalk in the town over (Rehoboth; which has a bunch of gay bars), great outlet shopping, etc. The restaurants (on the whole) are exactly what you'd expect from a lazy beachy town, but there are a few standouts. I think it's one of the best kept "secrets" on the East Coast.
Considering I can't stand Jones Beach, I'd truly much rather drive down here and make a little trip out of it. Nearly everyone I know who has gone down to Dewey or Rehoboth has made return visits.

At least in Buffalo, though, you are close enough to easily get to both the Shaw Festival and Stratford Festival in Ontario, if you are so inclined.
If I ever have the money I would love to have a lake house on Lake Cayuga up near Ithaca.

Living in Chicago I truly believe there is no place in this country better than Chicago in the Summer. My family also has a beach house in Grand Haven, Michigan. The best beach on a lake I have ever been to... the west coast of Michigan off Lake Michigan is wonderful. Also, Mackinac Island is a great place to check out in the summer.
Cedar Point is my go to spot every summer for an amusement park. The best roller coasters in the world! (the brand new Gatekeeper, Top Thrill Dragster, Maverick, Millennium Force, etc...). Wisconsin Dells is also great.
I just got back from Toronto, Stratford and Niagara Falls. I had never been to the falls and that was a blast. Maid of the Mist and the actual Falls were nice, but the night clubs we were it was at.
