She's funny. But she needs to grow. She has a certain schtick. Every character the same. Even people who like her will get tired of that.
It's not like the old days when people could build a lifetime career on one schtick. People don't have the attention span any more and get bored easily...always looking for the next shiny person to adore.

I saw it this morning and absolutely hated it. Not a single laugh to be found.
I won't say it's the worst movie I've ever seen in my life, but certainly it ranks up there in the past few years.

Posted: 7/6/14 at 3:24pmIt's on a par with Identity Thief. Really disappointing. I don't know how you take the talents of McCarthy, Sarandon, Alison Janney, Kathy Bates, Toni Collette, and Sandra Oh, and make a bad movie, but they managed it here. Mark Duplass was the only actor whose performance was not annoying. Seemed like a good idea for McCarthy's husband to write a movie for her, but it desperately needed an outside opinion. So much wasted talent.

Sarandon, Alison Janney, Kathy Bates. It's at its best when these three are onscreen and anchoring the proceedings. When they aren't in the scene, the movie becomes unmoored.
Still, it's a hundred times better than Deliver Us From Evil.

St. Vincent looks like it could be a departure.

Posted: 7/8/14 at 12:58amI was really in the mood to like it. I'm just immune to being frightened by things jumping out of the dark anymore. Poor Eric Bana just doesn't have any gravitas or the skill set to play a Bronx detective without showing the strain of the accent work all over his face. I don't blame him for trying to the young Tony Lapaglia, though. And Father Exposition was so funny. These are the steps of an exorcism encounter with a demon. They will happen in this exact order. When things calm down, that step is over.

I don't go see them because they're so awful but was so psyched to see a R-rated non-torture porn scary movie without found footage, I thought the elements were in place.
Poor Joel McHale. They should have rethought the tattoos. And never introduce a Red Sox act in the first act without it going off in the third.
