THE CONJURING

We saw the trailer for "You're Next," and it has great potential! Those masks are fvcking creepy.
The last one that really got me was the first "Paranormal Activity," which I know a lot of people thought was just flat-out stupid, but I confess it sunk in slowly, and I didn't sleep well for three nights. Before that... gosh... I don't know. "Hostel"?
I think "Psycho" is the only movie that truly terrifies me every time I watch it, so much so that I have trouble getting a shower too soon after.

I agree that "The Strangers" was terrific and really stuck in my mind. But I have to say, the first time I saw the First PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, it freaked me out. I bought into it and certain scenes really disturbed me and stuck in my head.
Slept with lights on for a few nights.
And INSIDIOUS has to be one of the best in the last Ten years.
And Can't wait for the sequel.
Looking forward to seeing the CONJURING this Friday.

Posted: 7/24/13 at 9:56amThe whole randomness of "because you were home" in THE STRANGERS is what makes it so great and do terrifying. And I think they're still making a sequel (which I'm less than thrilled with).

An interesting interview with one of the real life daughters of the house:

"She also said there were things that the film did not touch because they were too scary."
Yeah right.

Really enjoyed it. Had fun seeing it with a full house and their reactions.
Had a few scenes that provided good scares.
I thought the acting was excellent as were the production values and sound effects.
It really looked like it was filmed in the '70's.
One of the best scare flicks I have seen in a long time.

I was really looking forward to it, and wanted to love it, but I found the whole thing to be derivative and formulaic. It's as if the director took The Amityville Horror, Poltergeist, The Exorcist, Paranormal Activity (1, 2, 3 and 4), and even The Birds, threw them into a blender, and this is what came out. Far too "paint by numbers" for my taste. I guess when you can't be original, you pay homage. And the audience that I saw it with was really annoying. Sad that so few people seem to know how to conduct themselves in public these days. Selfish, self-absorbed, ill-mannered assh@les with no consideration for anyone other than themselves. Nowadays, I see fewer and fewer movies in a theater, and this is exactly why. I'd rather wait the 3-4 months and watch in the comfort and privacy of my own living room. In fact, had I watched this movie for the first time at home, alone, in a darkened room, it might have had more of an effect on me. It still would have been as cheesy as hell, but it might have at least provided a few cheap thrills. As it were, not so much as a goosebump. A major disappointment.
ETA: And can anyone tell me why this movie was R rated??? It was devoivd of profanity, nudity and sex, and the violence was on the mild side and pratically gore-free. Persoanlly, I think the producers asked for the R to give the impression that it was more adult and scarier than it actually is.

I went to a screening in Brooklyn with an all Black audience. Needless to say there was constant commentary going on. More texting then I have seen anywhere. I think I am done going to movie theatres.
I agree with Lusicous about it being a coarsely blended movie of much better horror films.

No, I find the rudeness to be in most movie theatres in the city. To a lesser or greater degree. The last time I was in a very well behaived theatre was in a Mall in Miami.
#36THE CONJURING
Posted: 7/30/13 at 2:32pmThat is too bad. Distributors and theater owners should be making more a effort with crowd control at the theaters. It is getting less and less desirable to go to the movies instead of waiting to watch it at home.

Posted: 7/30/13 at 3:36pmI was hoping to be jumping out of my seat. Didn't happen. It was good but I left the theater thinking I need to go play 307 as a daily number. :)

LOL. Well anything put out by The Disney Channel would surpass those two for that title.

I was severely disappointed in both of those.

I find Chelsea Clearview (which is now Chelsea Bow Tie...huh??) is still the most 'adult' theater in town. The crowds (which are always diverse) are generally always well behaved.
That said, and this is gonna sound so racist, but I loved seeing THE CONJURING with my Nubian sisters surrounding me in the audience. Right at the beginning, the woman next to me started saying, 'You better listen to your dog! LISTEN TO YOUR DOG!' I was dying.
Good times.

After about the first few Crazy scenes, I heard one African American woman turn to her friend and say " Why do White Folks just stay around,..right about now,I'd be throwing my **** in the car and be gone ! "
LMAO

^ See...if the movie is right, I think that kind of stuff can be so fun. I mean...I don't want to hear a running commentary during Schindler's List. But a fun, crazy horror movie? Delightful. I know I may be alone in that, though.
#46THE CONJURING
Posted: 7/30/13 at 5:19pmThat kind of audience reaction is exactly why I paid to see this in the theater. Except for the text messaging.....that's annoying.

Posted: 7/30/13 at 5:23pmThat kind of audience reaction is why I see horror movies in Chelsea. I'll never go to a movie so I can hear people talking throughout it unless its a live director commentary.

LORDS was a complete waste of time. Typical misogynistic Zombie crap masquerading as empowering women. MAMA was good until they showed Mama which never looked like a human being but always a CGI joke. Both had miserable endings.
Has anyone seen BYZANTIUM?
