I don't know enough about this candidate to make a snap judgment, but at first glance this COULD be anexample of tenuous guilt by association. I checked a couple of the one-off links in the original post, and the references to the candidate seemed tangential. In the end, he may be a scumbucket, but to me it looks like the article may be making huge leaps to make the associations. If these are the kinds of leaps made by the right to disparage Obama back in 2008, they shouldn't be supported.

What sort of ties does Emmer have with the bigoted rock band? That's all it says.

And, where is the Manhattan Target going to be?

ETA: According to Joe's article, Target among other MN companies donated money (thanks to that stupid Supreme Court ruling) to Minnesota Forward which supports candidates who support business growth. It is Minnestota Forward who ran an ad in support of the candidate.

Singtopher, it's on 116th and 1st Ave, the most inaccessible location imaginable for it. It would take me 3 times as long to getthere from my place in midtown as it does to get to the one in Brooklyn. If only they'd open one up around 42nd and 11th where there is NOTHING, then I'd be happy!

That location is correct. You can get there by taking any north/south local (1,2,3,6,B,C) to their respective 116th St stop, then the 116 bus crosstown. The #15 bus, which runs north/south along the east side (Financial District, East Village, Murray Hil, Upper East Side, etc) will also get you there. I guess Target is betting the the 2nd Ave subway line will eventually be completed.

"Chief Executive Officer Gregg Steinhafel assured employees at the company's Minneapolis headquarters in an e-mail that the discount retailer's support of the gay community is "unwavering." He said employees, some gay, raised concerns that the money is helping state Rep. Tom Emmer, a fiery conservative who is his party's likely nominee for governor."

And, FYI, yesterday Senate Republicans blocked a democratic bill that would require disclosure of all corporate political contributions like this. So the next time this happens (and it will) Whole Foods, say, will just keep their contributions quiet.

I know giving up your corporate yum-yums is hard but ask yourself...do you love Target or do you love people?

This isn't such a black and white discussion.

According to the HRC (whether you like them or not), Target has an excellent record on LGBT issues aside from this donation:

So, while I agree that we should take them to task for this screw-up (not shopping there until this is resolved), this does not automatically mean that Target is suddenly Wal-Mart or a place we can never ever shop at again.

Reading this: http://www.towleroad.com/2010/07/hrc-calls-on-target-and-best-buy-to-make-it-right-with-regard-to-donations-to-antigay-candidates.html it would seem that they are being logically about this. Target and Best Buy have had a great record on LGBT issues and this donation scars it. Thus, they should take action to correct things.

But, to be fair, that's the extent of knowledge I have about HRC's actions with this as this story broke out while I was in a Mickey Mouse-induced coma.

The man's odious positions go a lot further than gay rights. Remember, this is the guy who wants to change Minnesota's wage law so that tips count as a part of wages (like most other states, unfortunately) and based it on the thought that wealthy waiters are earning $100,000 a year.

Exactly. I don't see why this isn't positioned more as "Target gave money to an off-the-charts Bachmannesque whackjob (who's also an antigay nut)" rather than "Target gave money to an antigay nut." It explains more why Target's policies for its glbt employees aren't really relevant.
