This is a non-apology. He says, "I realize our decision affected many of you in a way I did not anticipate, and for that I am genuinely sorry."

He's sorry it affected employees the wrong way. THAT IS NOT AN APOLOGY. It's just a way of insulting and placating at the same time--it actually means: "You're a bunch of over-sensitive pansies and I wish you'd all just shut yup."

An apology is an admission of wrongdoing: Not "I'm sorry you over-reacted" but "I'm sorry I did that. I now realize I was wrong."

Besides, he didn't ask for the money back, so he still stands behind the contribution.

It's all very distressing. I've long since boycotted Wal-Mart for its policies and whatnot (the whatnot being that it's simply one of the most depressing places on earth) and I guess I should with Target, too, although someone pointed out to me that it still doesn't change the fact that cheap labor is what produces what they sell and that really pulling at the thread of any of these kinds of stores (and probably, ANY kind of stores) will lead you to places that are sure to bring you unease.

Like I said, very distressing.

If you go to the Prop 8 donor site, and search for Target or Target PAC, you get no donations. If you search under employees you see about 30 different donations on both sides of the issues.

So, while I am sure that Target employees donated to both sides of the issue, I am not so sure that Target itself did.

YWiW, that's what it looks like. The update to the Huffington Post article talks about it:

UPDATE: As has been pointed out to me, yes, the Open Secrets figures here do not necessarily mean anything other than deep-pocketed individual employees of Target are making personal contributions to these ballot initiatives.

So, to be clear, Target employees were playing both sides of the Prop 8 fence. My primary concern in this instance, is with the HRC's Corporate Equality Index, which measures "workplace practices" but eschews any rating based on political contributions save those made "to a ballot initiative that is anti-LGBT (such as California's Prop. 8 in 200

." In this instance, it's just one more red flag that the HRC should have noted before awarding Target a perfect 100% rating.

That's what they are counting on: The gays putting their heads in the sand and hoping this goes away and lighting onto any miniscule evidence that all this is just gay hysteria.

Unfortunately, there are no small amount of gays who will do just that.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I think it's kind of funny when people say they're going to boycott Target but still go to Wal-Mart. They may not do explicitly anti-gay stuff, but the laundry list of things wrong with Wal-Mart is quite longer than the list for Target.

And I just ask that everyone turn a little out their outrage toward the whole Supreme Court corporation donations stuff.

What concerns me is this question: is ANY corporation guilt-free?

I ask because my non-Target options include Bed, Bath & Beyond, Duane Reade, Rite Aid, and CVS, basically. How do I know they are no worse? Gotta research, but before this 150K debacle, I had clearly thought Target was one of the good guys. And, maybe they ultimately are aside from the people who made this choice.

As for the Supreme Court decision, it IS awful. But the flip side is that we are starting to know where these corporations stand. It's no shock that Fox News made it's million dollar contribution to Republicans. But, now, can they really call themselves "fair and balanced" based on that alone?

We now know where Target and Best Buy really stand. What we are seeing is that these donations (until they start hiding them better) are going to be held up to the corporations. This is why the shareholders are ticked off. Whether they agree with the donation or not, they are NOT liking the PR nightmare it caused.

I know what you're saying, Jerby. I think about that all the time. And also, even if they are contributing to causes you or I think are worthy, does it make us hypocrites if we patronize them BECAUSE of that? I don't have an answer.

I think we all have to vote with our dollars as best we can. I can forgive myself for shopping at a store and not knowing they have bad policies more than I can shopping there knowing they have bad policies. Yes, my ignorance doesn't excuse the former, but we can't know everything.

Did you guys ever see the documentary "The Corporation"? Part of the premise is to take the psychological definition of a sociopath and show how all corporations are, in essence, sociopaths. It's a bit reaching, but an interesting watch, anyway.
