From The Note 7/26/04

"Democratic National Convention: Teresa Heinz Kerry:

Here is the exact quote that Teresa Heinz Kerry used during her speech to the Pennsylvanian delegates, which later prompted a question by a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review editorial writer.

"We need to turn back some of the creepy (long pause) un-Pennsylvanian and sometimes un-American traits that have come into our some of our politics …"

One take: She is talking about politics in general and is NOT directly referencing the Bush campaign when she makes this statement.

Another take: it's convention week — she's obviously referencing Bush.

The editorial reporter is Colin McNickle.

Here's a verbatim transcript, courtesy of ABC's Jan Simmonds:

McNickle (Tribune editorialist): (inaudible) … Un-American activity? You mentioned un-American?

THK: No, I did not say that.

M: What did you mean?

THK: I did not say that (pointing finger at reporter).

M: Well, what did you say?

THK: I did not say that.

M: I am just asking what did you say.

THK: Why are you putting those words in my mouth?

M: I thought you said something about being un-American?

THK: No I did not say that.

Later, Ms. Heinz Kerry returns.

THK to M: Are you from the Tribune Review?

M: Yes I am.

THK: Of course. (turns away quickly)

M: Come here. (taping her on the elbow)

THK: (Turns back to reporter) Understandable. You said something I didn't say, now shove it … "

um, now which part didn't she say?

Sounds like she had a history with that reporter or paper. As I said, she was being rude. But I'll excuse the occassional rudeness, as long as it isn't a general personality trait. There are bigger things to worry about.

I think she got p!ssed at him from the first thing he said--and was stuck on defending that. If she was possibly guilty of anything it was not clarifying what she was referring to by "un-American".

This is going to be a long 3 months while you attempt to trash the Kerrys and the Edwards. Too bad your pile of trashing won't even equal the tip of Dubya's trashpile--it might have been fun otherwise. re: heinz But, I understand you have to try. It MUST be frustrating knowing that these people will be living in the White House soon.

Un-American traits and un-American activity are quite different things

But, I forgive her, as I forgive Cheney for his expletive

Frankly--I love it when politicians tell it like it is. I love that Cheney said what he said just as I love that Teresa said what she said. I'm not the one-sided, cable news guest that some might think I am (and certainly are themselves) on here.

oh jrb, why don't you go f*** yourself? oh wait, sorry this isn't the senate floor, damn. eh, we'll see, jrb, we'll see. don't go counting those chickens in july 'cuz it's a long way to november.

all he wanted her to do was clarify what she meant by un-american. i seem to recall not too long ago people getting bent outta shape by republicans using that very same term.

To my knowledge she had no history with the reporter. None. In fact she didn't know who he was. It was explained to her to which newspaper he was affiliated. But there were other reporters present to ask the same follow up question. What was meant by her comment? What traits are un-Pennsylvanian and un-American?

She didn't have to publicly speak to the Pennsylvania delegation. And once she did, with media present, she should have been prepared for questions. She is not a novice to the political area.

Rest in peace, Iflitifloat.

After the incident Sunday, a spokesperson for Heinz Kerry told CNN affiliate WTAE, "This was sheer frustration, aimed at a right-wing rag that has consistently and purposely misrepresented the facts in reporting on Mrs. Kerry and her family."
_____________
Teresa's response:

But she said the reporter was using the term "un-American activities, which has a very different connotation."

"It's a political connotation of McCarthy implications, which I would not use unless it was very specific. I would use it if it was correct. But that's not what I was talking about."

When asked why she didn't walk away, Heinz Kerry said "this person was trying to trap me and I was not going to let him."

Peace, love and happiness, papa and jrb. All in all, whether Mrs. Kerry was provoked or just rude is a very small matter.

I have updated my prior post to indictate when Teresa has said something and not her spokesperson.

And, don't be so quick to yell, "spin". You GOPs are spinning so darn much right now, I half expect Dubya to throw up on a foreign leader. Oh, sorry, that's right. Dubya only visits battle ships and Crawford. No worries.

it was an aircraft carrier, hippie! you don't land a plane on a battleship! spin is when you need someone to explain something to you instead of reading it with yo' own 2 eyes.

battle ship, aircraft carrier--don't ask, don't tell

I'm sure Dubya didn't know what he was on either. re: heinz
