The women of the US are encouraged to express their opinions and can rise to hold public office or be the CEO of a major corporation. Surely Teresa was not talking about American women, perhaps she was addressing the women of the middle east.

Sure, women can rise to almost any position, but the cultural pressures against them doing so are still pretty considerable.

Thirdrowcenter - I just don't like to assume things, that's why I asked. I know that my sister has faught a little bit against the good-ole-boy structure in her corner of corporate America. Not that it exists everywhere, but to say it isn't an issue at all seems to me a little 'pie in the sky.'

thirdrowcenter, wealth and kindness are not opposing values.

The beauty is that she is a billionare and STILL cares deeply about the common man/woman.

She is as great a philanthropist as is possible, and it is sickening to see her being shot down for her kindness and strength.

Girls are discouraged from going into certain areas (just as boys ar discouraged from going into others) from an early age. To give a slightly esoteric example, look at math teams. The U.S. has only had one female on its Mathematics Olympiad teams. Ever. That's about 30 years' worth of teams. Why is it that foreign countries (including ones with teams both better and worse than that of the U.S.) have more girls on their teams? Math teams are a strict meritocracy- your score is your score. But I wonder if the fact that girls tend to drift away from math and science isn't entirely due to neurology. Speaking from personal experience, I don't think it is.

I doubt any of these rich people on either side give a hoot about anyone riding the subway

Why call only Teresa to task on it

Laura & George arent interested either

Ted Kennedy lives a very privilged life....he's not overly concerned either

All these people are beyond well off & rich.

One must pick the lesser of the evils

"Ted Kennedy lives a very privilged life....he's not overly concerned either"

Bull****. He has done more for the average American than any Senator, ever. He is a man who has sepnt his life working for the average American to be able to live a better life. And he is the leading crusader to raise the minimum wage.

You know what.

Several years ago I worked in putting together the AIDSWalk here in NYC. And I had the pleasure of meeting a woman who is a Roosevelt. She doesn't have to work. At all. Ever. But the idea of service to others because you are fortunate is essential to who they are as a family.

Not every rich person is a dilletante.

I reject the notion that it is not an issue in this country. There is still a huge wage gap between men and women. Progress has undoubtedly been and we stand well above other regions of the world, but there is still a long way to go. The barefoot and pregnant and silent ethos is alive and well.

What I find disturbing is that Heinz Kerry never gave a clarification to the question that was asked. For those unaware of the bases of the "shove it" comment here's the background.

She had spoken to the Pennsylvanian delegates on the need for *civility* in politics.
"We need to turn back some of the creeping, un-Pennsylvanian and sometimes un-American traits that are coming into some of our politics," Heinz Kerry told Pennsylvania delegates.

A journalist asked her for a clarification on what she meant by "un-American activity." The question was asked three times, and rather than explaining her comment she walked away. Only to return to confront the journalist Colin after she was told which conservative newspaper he worked.

"Reporters wanted to know what she meant. Colin asked -- in an aggressive but not unusual manner. ... He was behaving like a reporter," said political reporter Peter L. DeCoursey of The Patriot-News in Harrisburg.

"Yes, she said, 'Shove it.' What's more interesting is that she specifically came back to tell him to shove it," he said. "She elbowed her way back through her own aides to come back and wave her finger in Colin's face, and tell him to shove it.
The video crew for WTAE-TV news anchor Scott Baker captured Heinz Kerry's remarks. Baker said McNickle had asked "a pretty straightforward question."
"He was not combative. I think he seemed to be polite. The question that he asked was one that had already occurred to me," Baker said. "Clearly, she was rankled by it."

Now I'm all for someone speaking their mind. But I think when you do so publicly, in the area for a political election, you should be expected to be questioned about it.

Rest in peace, Iflitifloat.

And I know for a fact that Cheney telling a Sentor to "F*ck yourself" was worse than Kerry telling a reporter to 'Shove it'

I realize she panicked and kept saying, "I didn't say that" but she did say it. The reporter was just doing his job.

Senator Patrick Leahy personally attacked V.P. Cheney.

The reporter was asking her why she said "un-American activities" when she never said that. "Shove it" was probably an inappropriate thing to say, but I'll forgive the occassional break in civility. Even from Cheney. There's a thousand other reasons to despise the guy.

exactly!

if she said "un-Pennsylvanian and sometimes un-American traits", she did not say. "un-American activity." Those are two TOTALLY different things. Considering her history with that particular reporter, her actions and comments were completely correct and justified.

Papa, you sho is bitter this week! Such grand comments: well, I WOULD rather listen to a goat than your slathering b!tch!ness any day of the week.
