Posted: 8/2/04 at 2:57pmActually, Gore did a ton during the Clinton administration, to the point of being seriously overworked. He has his problems, but I think he was underrated in some ways. But Vice Presidents usually don't get much attention, unless it's for the wrong reasons. *cough*Cheney*cough*. Updated On: 8/2/04 at 02:57 PM

"Reducing the size of the government" is a straw man. So, frankly, is the relative size of the deficit, once it gets trapped in an endless back-and-forth about methods of calculation . Who cares?
How are the economic lives of the majority of citizens improved or worsened by the economic policies of an administration?
How is the security and prestige of our nation improved or worsened by the policies and actions of an administration?
How are the rights and freedoms of our citizens enlarged and protected (or circumscribed and threatened) by the actions and policies of an administration?
On all these counts, obviously, GWB is a terrifying failure. An unmitigated disaster. The damage done by one (please, God) term in the hands of this man and his puppet masters will take years of enlightened government to undo.

I know that reducing the size of government isn't necessarily a good thing- big government isn't inherently bad; oppressive and/or inefficient government is bad. I just find it sadly funny that most people still believe that it's Republicans that reduce the size of government.
And since it's Reagan who pretty much introduced the concept that the government had to balance its books in order to have solid financial policy, it's also sadly funny that Clinton was the one who got rid of the deficit.
Damn, he made a better Republican than the Republicans. No wonder they hated him so much.

Posted: 8/2/04 at 6:35pmLovely... our NBC affiliate just did a story on how Miami is the second largest financial center to NYC and security has been increased on the main street in the area. It's comforting to hear them say, "it's much easier to control a plane than a full financial district. Right behind me, you see the police searching an unmarked van." This was a block away from our apartment. I think we should be OK, but still.....

I'm in DC. I heard that they were going to put up a jersey wall around Capitol Hill. This is a 40-block area right in the middle of the city. ANY vehicles attempting to enter the area will be searched first.
If I'm not mistaken, this will include Union Station. I just came back from NY on AMTRAK and I didn't see a bit of increased security. I hope this changes. Seriously.

Two times this past week end we saw hightened police activity. Sunday morning a car stoped at the entrance of the Lincon Tunnel going into the City. The cops were going over this one w/ a fine toothed comb!
Then in the City on 5th Ave near St. Patricks 2 cops on every corner.
Last May ('03) My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary in NYC that Friday night Times Square was full of NYPD in full riot gear, dogs in flap vests and more rifles than I ever saw. But I realized that this is a sad new reality.

Posted: 8/2/04 at 7:09pmWhen I worked in Times Square we saw alot of that. Sometimes on the weekend at any random time about eight cop cars would pull up and line the street and they would get out with bomb sniffing dogs. The rest of them would stand in a line by the sidewalk with helmets, bullet proof vests and huge rifles in there hands. They would do it for a few hours at a time then go somewhere else.

i love you all dearly, and i hate offending people, but i've got to give my opinion here, as other people have.
george w. bush is a asshole. watch farenheight 9/11. i cannot understand how ANYONE could stand up in his defense, republican or note. it's the truth: he wouldn't be where he is if it weren't for his father. he has all these connections to middle-eastern countries. he counted which ones he could "attack" without losing money. he chose iraq. what the f***!?

"Didn't Clinton reduce the size of government (in terms of number of employees, at least) more than any of the last 3 Republican Presients? Funny, that."
*** Why, yes Clinton did reduce the size of government. There were cuts in the FAA, US Customs, US Immigrations and other law enforcement agencies. Always opens to speculation what that may have brought us.

Hahahaha, HFimg, you really make me laugh. (and not your spelling and grammar errors either. First of all, he's 'an' asshole.
)
And if you want some links in MY collection, I can send it to you. (Yes, i have heard that list, thanks to my US History teacher reading that in class.)
I love this one: "Members of Bush cabinet are the richest administration in history." Because being rich is bad.
Of course most of the facts are true, it's the way that some of them are spun that makes me giggle.
#146re: terror alert elevated
Posted: 8/3/04 at 12:18amYes, LG, it is pretty crappy that Bush's administration is paid so well when a chunk of the country can't feed their families. Just dandy.

You propose a pay cut for everyone working in the government?
So does John Kerry promise to pick poor people for his cabinet?
