Posted: 8/1/04 at 11:10pmI don't think anyone's actually terrified of something happening to them that they don't want to go anywhere, it's just more like what are people supposed to do with all this information? I know another attack is inevitable, but it could be in two months, it could be in ten years. The WTC attack was planned for a very long time, I'm sure.

In my opinion they do know something more then when they normally raise the alert, they listed the actual places this time mostly because if the county knows about the then it ruins the terrorist element of surprise, which seems to be there favorite thing, they like to attack and do it seemingly out of nowhere. I feel the government feels that by announcing the locations and throwing off any planed surprise they lesson the chance of the attack. They could never execute a large plan if a country like ours is on alert.
It just seams to me that this group of people are not willing to take on the masses, if they where it wouldn't be reported that one or two Americans where taking into captivate every so often over there it would be like every other war just battles at a time with masses of men and women fighting. They know they can't handle a whole army by them self, they can't do it in there home land how are they going to do it here? (I mean no disrespect to the single people who have been killed in over there, I was just trying to make a point.)
I know my opinion doesn't really matter here because I am only a teenage and a part of the younger generation of this board but that is how I feel. I'm another one who refuses to live my life in fear! One reason is if I did it would mean they have won, and they aren't going to win that easy.

Posted: 8/2/04 at 11:53amOf course we're all alert-weary, and having lived with up/down of the system for a while, alert-fatigue leads to cynicism, and frankly cynicism leaves us very vulnerable. As I type this, the President has pre-empted all stations to announce implementation of the 9/11 recommendations. I could easily say the heightened alert provides the ideal context for his decisive acts and statesman-like appearance -- taking charge when taking charge feels more life-death. But stepping back from my OWN deeply poltical POV, I'm more troubled by how the world has changed since 9/11 -- it's far more dangerous, and too much time has gone by with nothing happening here. We are all to savvy to think Al Q is through with us, and that they aren't seriously interested in more destruction on these shores. As much as I disdain this administration, and resent the battle-fatigue of the alert movements, the Al Q threat is real. It has been with us for over a decade, and will be around along time. We have to temper our natural predisposition toward cynical reactions with sober acceptance of the truth. We are in danger, no matter who is in the White House, and we will be for longer than any of us care to admit.

Until November 3, I see this as all theatre from the Bush administration. If there is an attack, I will eat these words, but over the past years, we have typically gone to orange when Bush needed something to pass--when he needed public support. You can bet your butts this is all set up for a protest free RNC and to gather up votes made out of fear.

Posted: 8/2/04 at 12:14pmwell from what i've read this information was taken off a computer seized last week in a raid in pakistan after a 12 hour gun battle which netted ahmed khalfan ghailani and another unnamed but according to pakistani officials "wanted man." which might explain the urgency with which it was disseminated, since there was no time table available. of course, if he really "needed something to pass" he might want to call the congress back into a special session which he has specifically chosen not to do. public support i think he's not worried about unless he, like kerry, gets a miniscule bounce from his convention.

I sincerely don't think that the terror alerts were theatrics by the Bush Administration. I have doubts about their motives for a lot of things, but not this. I think they honestly thought we'd be more secure if people were more alert at times. I don't see why the hell Bush would get a popularity boost from saying terrorists are striking again, with the implication that his security measures have failed.
On the other hand, the year to year and a half after 9/11, when Bush and his cronies could just accuse anyone who disagreed with them of being on the terrorists' side, was pretty damn disgusting. There were theatrics that took advantage of 9/11, all right. I just don't think the color coding was part of that.
I watched the original Manchurian Candidate last night. Scary ****. And horribly relevant today.

Posted: 8/2/04 at 12:37pmcan you name an administration that has existed in any country at any time from which some false information was not at some point disseminated whether intentionally or not? nevermind, y'know what? it's your opinion, knock yourself, out. go scream it from the rooftops. bush is a lying manipulator and this is all more lies to scare the american public and none of it has any truth to it. if possible, can you find a way to get national multi-media distribution of that viewpoint? i hope and pray that i never have the reason and opportunity to say "i told you so."

#91re: terror alert elevated
Posted: 8/2/04 at 12:43pmjrb, it's not the kool-aid. any person with even a jaded degree of objectivity can look at evidence. but hey, i said it's your opinion, i just wish that more people who believed this way would stand up and say it out loud instead of hiding their views. i'd like to see somebody besides howard dean go on network tv and say, "this is all a sham." i wish that more folks who believe that john kerry will protect us from the lying liars who make up things like this would stand up and be counted on the record.

To be completely and totally honest, I don't even like Kerry that much. Sad, ain't it? Dean was absolutely ripped to shreds for all the wrong reasons (He screamed? So. F*CKing. What?), and Kerry just kind of filled the space because he's a Vietnam vet. Say what you want about Dean, but he was against the war from the start, he's actually passionate about policy, and he's *gasp* interesting. Heaven forbid. No wonder the ****heads in the media tore him down.
That said, maybe we need a boring but steady President after the craziness of the Clinton and Bush v.2 years. Someone who'll just quietly clean up our mess and get us back on our feet again. You know...someone who's more into fixing problems than pushing ideology (and that's aimed at Bush v.2, by the way). Just sayin'.

Plum, you'll remember the Dean scream came AFTER he lost Iowa to Kerry and Edwards. The scream really just sealed the deal.
I think the threat is real and (LISTEN UP, PAPA) I do believe Tom Ridge was right to announce it. These freakin' lunatics can come and kiss my ass if they're going to blow anyone else up.
At the same time, this Administration does not "own" this issue. Bush has bungled the war in Iraq badly, and it will make me retch to see him use another terrorist attack, or the potential of one, for political gain.
I was performing in Washington during the sniper attacks, and let me tell you, we were all freaked out. Every night I left the theater, we were terrified of any white van.
If you're scared, they're doing their job well. So everyone relax and come on over here for a little libation and a backrub if you're tense.

don't worry, plum, no one really likes him. as hillary clinton famously said of him, "you don't have to fall in love, you just have to fall in line." dean would have been a fabulous candidate but would have gone down in flames magnificently. the problem of course is that he is much more representative of what the democratic rank and file believe than john kerry. kerry's tall, speaks slowly and deliberately and has good hair. oh yeah, and he spent amost 4 months in vietnam. did i mention he was in vietnam? well, he was.
i don't think that steadiness will get us out of wher we are right now, plum. i think that the applecart has been kicked over in front of a steamroller and for better or worse, there's no trying to put the apples back. dean i could respect, even as i made merciless jokes at his expense because he truly believed in something. same with kucinich and carole mosely braun. hell, i was even willing to give edwards the benefit of the doubt (and mark my words, he would wiped the floor with gw). but kerry to me is the worst sort of american politician. the kind that stands for nothing but what will get him to the next level. i think that if he'd has a different constituency that he would be a staunch conservative today and probably would have beat out gw for the nod in '00. i think that for better or worse the conflict in which we find ourselves requires someone who can somtimes say, f**k it, we're doing whatever i say we're doing dammit and the hell with what people think. i just cannot see jfk2 ever, ever being able to do that.

The apples ain't all going back into the apple cart, papa. You're right about that much. And Dean would indeed have gone down in flames. Because he actually has opinions, and that scares the media ****less. Unless...and this is a dream, I know...he somehow managed to inflame the media. To be one of those candidates who come out of nowhere with crazy momentum. The way he seemed to be early in the primary season. If he'd managed to regain that somehow...yeah. Anyway. Back to reality.
I don't know about Kerry. My instincts tell me he's nothing much, but maybe he'll change our minds if he gets elected. I don't know. I just know that I want the guy who upset the applecart (and is now stomping all over the apples) to get the hell out.
