The problem with Democrats is that are not willing to sink to the level of a polarizing viewpoint. Republicans have seized upon the issue of "morality" (surprising that morals are SO important to my southern relations, given the unbelievable amount of premarital sex, drugs, and immoral behavior which Baptists are SO very good at...Kristin Cheno? Anything to add?) and have used it to their advantage.
For Democrats, it seems their weapon of choice on most issues is silence and since Republicans are so good at lobbing easy setups for each other, they set Democrats up so they can cry, "look! They want Terri dead" and people like Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh are all over it faster than Limbaugh can snort a line or Newt Gingrich can cheat on his new wife.
Ann's just a big ol' closeted lez anyway. At least, that's the only thing I can think of to explain her.

Local Republicans back Greer

Accused of "murder" in the Schiavo case by U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay, the judge is defended at home.

By MICHAEL SANDLER, Times Staff Writer
Published March 22, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CLEARWATER - Many local Republicans shuddered last weekend when U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay accused a Pinellas judge of "murder" and "terrorism."

Such labels, troubling in any context, are particularly grating when they involve two members of the same political party.

"I was absolutely so disgusted with what he said," said County Commissioner Bob Stewart.

Pinellas County Property Appraiser Jim Smith, a former state legislator and Republican state committeeman, called DeLay's remarks "a disgrace."

Local Republicans had their own words for Judge George Greer, who, as presiding judge in the Terri Schiavo case, ordered the removal of her feeding tube on March 18.

Conscientious. Honest. Compassionate. A good Christian. An outstanding lawyer.

"Those folks that are saying anything bad about Judge Greer, they don't know him, and apparently they don't understand the law and the separation of powers," said state Rep. Everett Rice, R-Treasure Island, who stood behind Greer's decision last week in Tallahassee.

In Washington, Republican lawmakers worked through the weekend after Greer refused to let congressional subpoenas interfere with his order. Today would be Schiavo's fourth ful l day without nourishment.

Leading the way was DeLay, the House majority leader, who used inflammatory language while marshaling congressional Republicans to swiftly force a federal judge in Tampa to hear a request by Schiavo's parents to reinsert her feeding tube.

"Right now, murder is being committed against a defenseless American citizen in Florida," DeLay said.

He also said, "Schiavo's life is not slipping away - it is being violently wrenched from her body in an act of medical terrorism."

DeLay's office did not respond to requests for comment.

Greer, who declined to comment for this story, has been the subject of verba l attacks from religious and right-to-life groups since his ruling on Schiavo. He has als o received at least one death threat.

His Republican colleagues in Pinellas are saddened by DeLay's statements in the already emotional debate.

"I personally don't agree with Judge Greer's decision," said Ken Burke, Pinellas County Clerk of the Circuit Court and an active Republican. "But I respect the way he made it. I think those are inappropriate comments on DeLay's part."

"We need more judges like Judge Greer, not fewer," said Bruce McManus, a Largo probate lawyer who specializes in elder law.

McManus has found himself in a particularly difficult position. He's a member of groups that have been critical of Greer, such as the Southern Baptist Convention. But he also specializes in the area of law that Greer is interpreting.

McManus said Greer has done his best to make a tough decision, and called DeLay's comments "ridiculous."

"Judge Greer is an evangelical Christian man," McManus said. "He believes in the right to life as much as some of the people who are criticizing him so harshly. But he also believes in the rule of law, which he was sworn to uphold. To the best of his ability, that's what he is trying to do."

Rice is also a lawyer and last week opposed a bill in Tallahassee that would have blocked the removal of Schiavo's feeding tube.

"I can safely assume Judge Greer did the right thing in this case," Rice said. "And those people trying to vilify him about this are wrong. They are screaming and hollering for political gain. That's the only reason I can figure."

Rice said the comments have to hurt, but he knows the judge is taking them in stride.

"I think one of the most telling things about Judge Greer's integrity is that he could have dumped this case many times," Rice said. "He would not shirk his responsibility and he would not dump it on a fellow judge."

For Tony DiMatteo, the chairman of the Pinellas County Republican Executive Committee, the Schiavo case is "an emotional issue" that has brought out a variety of opinions in the party. DiMatteo has chosen to keep his to himself. He offered a few words from a former Republican president.

"Ronald Reagan had the 11th commandment: Thou shalt not speak ill of a fellow Republican," DiMatteo said. "I wish more would follow the commandment of Ronald Reagan."

Okay, two thoughts on this horried circumstance. Keep in mind, these views come from a Christian-but-non-conservative viewpoint.

First of all, it disgusts me that so many have hyped up "the sanctity of marriage" only to say that Schaivo's husband has less say than her family in this matter. If you really believe in the sanctity of marriage, fine. But then don't be hypocritical. Terri made her vows to this man. This does not mean that he's perfect. This does not mean that he will always make the right decisions. No spouse on earth is/will. But don't downplay the weight of that commitment ("I do") by saying that some court can march in and override his wishes.

Secondly, many politicians who tout their Christianity for votes and political gain seem to have lost sight of what they claim to believe. I will not stand and make any judgements on anyone's religion; however, I will call what I see. The idea of heaven and hell says that whatever we do on earth is repaid after death - so if Michael just wants to kill his wife, he will get his justice; if he has her best interest at heart, the same holds true. I say these Christian politicians should step back and realize that God will do his job. * All this being said, I realize that those who are not Christians or don't hold the same view of the afterlife as I may not agree. That's fine. I'm just saying that if these politicians truly believe in God, they need to realize that this case is greater than the scope of our flawed human understanding and, again, trust that final justice will be granted. But I get frustrated when faith is touted to gain votes. If you believe something, believe it; and keep it consistent.

Okay, stepping off the soapbox. Any thoughts?

Jesus gave a very serious commentary on this topic back in February to a reputable visionary. We have to think outside the box and accept that Terri's suffering is part of something much bigger than us. I fully support His statement below:

February 23, 2005, Wednesday
Message from Jesus to Theresa

My child, I AM your Jesus and I come at a time of great sadness to mankind for the world knows not that in destroying My little innocent one, Theresa Schiavo, they crucify Me. My fair child, post these words for all to see on the internet with the permission of your holy spiritual director, My priest-son, whom I have chosen as the guardian of your tender soul.

Think not, America, that you may lie and cheat and steal from your Lord and still enter My Kingdom, FOR YOU WILL NOT! I say WOE to you imposters of My Word, you harlots in black robes who impersonate just judges but who steal the life of My holy one, who cheat her out of her rightful defense and her day in court, and who forever lie about the details and facts of this case. God alone is your just and righteous judge and I shall judge you according to your deeds and you will stand before Me to whom you will be accountable. You will rue the day you denied My little one nourishment from her Lord in My Holy Eucharist and visits from My priests to minister to her soul.

I tell you, My people of America, you are far from your Lord and are awash in the stains of sins and of the blood of those whom you have slain under the guise of the false right to die. No one is the arbiter of life and death except your Lord and your God. You tread in treacherous waters when you pull the plug of life and disengage feeding tubes from an otherwise healthy human being called by Me, her Jesus, her Savior, to suffer for the sins of mankind in her afflicted state.

Post My child, to this internet with the permission of your spiritual director the prior message I dictated to you on this very issue of My daughter, Terri Schiavo, and the consequences and retribution by the hand of Almighty God on the state of Florida. Fear not reprisal or rebuke but let the Word of your Jesus go forth for all mankind to hear and know that the Day of Reckoning is at hand for I have stood at the gate and knocked but you closed every door to Me.

You denied Me room in the inn of your hearts to be born as your Savior and your King. Would that you would allow the Good Shepherd of your soul to awaken your hearts and quicken your being and awareness to the supreme error of your ways. For by terminating nourishment to the delicate and fragile temple of My cherished daughter, you thereby terminate and extinguish your own eternal life. The gates of heaven will forever prevail against thee and no door shall ever be open to thee until you repent of your horrid sins and make amends.

I say WOE to you, America, for not standing up for your Lord and defending Me in this, My little one. Surely there was some loophole that could have been found to turn back the assault on this precious life, so tender in My sight.

Neither will your Lord protect or defend you either here at home or abroad. I, Jesus, will allow thine enemies to assail thee and bring thee low in humiliation for all the world to see. As you trample the life of My unborn and now the life of the disabled, I, Lord Jesus, will allow thee to be trampled. Make no mistake, America, your days are numbered and your time is short before I pull the feeding tubes of grace and blessings I have bestowed on My beautiful land of the free. You shall be free no more to destroy the life I have created and endowed with a soul to love, honor and obey their Lord.

Humble yourselves before the throne of grace of your Merciful and Loving God before it is too late and all your freedoms are withdrawn by My righteous hand and I send chastisements and storms and weather conditions insufferable even to the most stalwart ones.

My people of earth, Hear your Lord calling from the heart of the mountain on Calvary's hill. My wounds bleed profusely this Lent as you annihilate the majestic life of the soul of your own beings by your heinous acts.

Instead of following in My footsteps up Calvary's hill and joining your sufferings with Mine for the salvation of souls, you, yourselves, are My persecutors. You, yourselves, place your lance in My side and drain the precious blood from My bleeding heart.

I say to My beloved apostles and disciples and faithful followers of Sweet Jesus, pray for these wayward ones who offend the Holy Face of God for they know not what they do. May Our God of Love have mercy on your souls.

I AM Jesus and I have spoken. Amen.

I'm going to hell for this, I know...

On the news they showed a protest with other patients in "vegetative" state being wheeled around by family members. They were wearing tee-shirts that said "NOT DEAD YET", and all I could think of was SPAMALOT!

Well, now it appears to be heading to the Supreme Court...which will probably deny hearing it...since they denied it twice already.

This means...

1.) either GWB will sign some executive order, which I doubt because the majority of Americans believe she should be allowed to die...but who can say? The man has done some rather unpredictable things lately.

2.) Back to the state...to Jeb...which is fine with me, since it deals with States Rights. But if you live in Florida, just make every effort to insure that your living will is in order...otherwise you will probably wind up "living" like Terri for the rest of your life.

3.) Terri expires...and the relgious right does everything in it's power to undermine that "damn liberal court system."

...said it best. No, not in THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD, when he played Himself.

But in HANNAH AND HER SISTERS, when he said, famously:

"...If Jesus came back, and saw what was being done in his name, he'd never stop throwing up..."

Okay, so I'm still trying to fight responding to Paulie because the adult in me knows that I shouldn't take such things personally...

but, yes, Auggie, I can't help but agree. My personal opinion is that God weeps when people go off on killing rampages or political cursades claiming to preserve whichever belief/denomination benefits them the most at the time. But then again, unlike the Theresa in Paulie's kind post, I don't get e-mails from Jesus. My virus scan probably weeds them out like it does e-mails from my professors.

JRB, I only say that because only severe repressed homosexual tendencies can explain her butchness and her severely right-wing beliefs and agenda.
I mean, come on, how could ANYONE lay flowers on the grave of McCarthy and claim he was "misunderstood?"

WCA - - let them bring on Frist and DeLay. I would love to go against that ticket.

I assume that Justice Kennedy would deny the petition. I cannot see Scalia interfering because it would be so hypocritical and intellectual dishonest even for him.

The 55 million that voted for Kerry are going to take great pause by this rather bizarre situation and hopefully look to 2006.

"This is a clash between the social conservatives and the process conservatives, and I would count myself a process conservative," said David Davenport of the Hoover Institute, a conservative research organization. "When a case like this has been heard by 19 judges in six courts and it's been appealed to the Supreme Court three times, the process has worked - even if it hasn't given the result that the social conservatives want. For Congress to step in really is a violation of federalism."

Exactly. We're going to whine, whine, whine until we get our way. If we don't like the way our government works because it's not always in our favor, we're going to go out and change everything we can about it.
