Come on, Papa...the real issue here is our current administration's desire to have it every way they can.
When the polls are against an issue (your mentioning of gay marriage), they want the judges to err on the side of public majority.
Now, with the issue CLEARLY (as even our lovely, right-winging Fox News must admit) on the side of Terri's right-to-DIE, the government wants to legislate and force the judges to do what they want.
Democrats, for their part, are willing to abide by the decisions of our judiciary as they are interpreters of our law.

What is unbelievable to me is majority America's hypocrisy. Or perhaps it's just a complete lack of understanding. Somehow (should these polls be correct), Most Americans want the government out of decisions like ENDING SOMEONE'S LIFE (be it your own or your spouse's), but heaven forbid we try to establish legally bound families that have responibilites to each other and the community at large.
Appalling.

i just wish they wouldn't wait so long to kill folks. i mean couldn't we just get a thumbs up or thumbs down in triage? it would so simplify things and make it easier on families later. that way they'd never even have to face such traumatic decisions about whether to remove a feeding tube and thus starve a person to death. or maybe a federal bureau of killin'. let's start by clearing death row and execute 'em all in one fell swoop. then we can move on to hospices and nursing homes and encourage the angels of death (like charley cullen and harry shipman) to ply their trades without any fear of silly prosecutions when all they were really doing is ending suffering.
that silliness aside, it's an issue of conscience for many people who see a culture of death taking root in a society that already devalues life to a great degree (not talking abortion there, but the callous disreagard fro life that is seen increasingly among the youth). many of these people are staunch opponents of the death penalty. they believe that humans never have the right to take life.
now the politicians who made this into a football? please, name a time when politicians have ever, ever declined to get involved in an issue if they thought it would appeal to their base? that's like cursing a compass for pointing north. it's disgusting, but they are what they are and they are nothing if not consistent.
democrats, for their part, are willing to abide by the decisions of our judiciary as they are interpreters of our law.
i'll just tuck this away even though i can't imagine that there will ever be a day when i might want to remind you of this.

I have one question for many of you:
Why don't they just give her a lethal injection and be done with it? Can't find any liberals that are brave enough to administer the injection?

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

No, Gotham, don't be snide.
No one can administer a lethal injection because that is ILLEGAL here.
We'll use medicine to maintain a completely horrific quality of life for someone, but we won't use it to ease suffering one whit if it means we're promoting this "culture of killing."
Boy, Republicans sure have gotten good at codewords to define our horrible social mores, haven't they?
Papa, go ahead and file that one away...I didn't see Dems trying to introduce legislation into Congress to elect Gore when the Supreme Court ruled in favor of that guy who lost the popular vote.

If heaven's such a great place, why are the conservatives so insistant on keeping this poor woman from getting there?

Onward, Christian soldiers! Marching the US into a policce state!
"There are two people in the United States who can save Terri Schiavo's life right now. The president of the United States and the governor of Florida have the authority to use the police services at their disposal to take Terri into protective custody, restore her food and hydration, and arrest anyone who would interfere," said Dr. Paul Schenck, executive director of the National Pro-Life Action Center on Capitol Hill. "For the sake of Terri's life, we cannot afford to wait while the courts dither over jurisdiction."

ah, yes, of COURSE! Let's just restore her food and hydration, and she will LEAP from her sickbed to the joy and relief of her family! Let us watch as, simply by restoring her electrolyte balance and giving her sustenance (which, by the way, kids, she never wanted...THE BITCH WAS BULEMIC), she frolics and leaps about with perfectly restored brain functionality! My stars, why didn't WE think of that? The mind fairly boggles.

Funny, that's what her husband called her too. Maybe she wouldn't have been bulemic if people didn't call her such horrible names.

Oh, THAT'S right, I forgot. Severe eating disorders are TOTALLY caused by people being mean to you. My bad. Gosh, if only we could just be nice to each other, think of all the illnesses we could prevent!

Doesn't it really come down to:
Do you believe in the judicial system to make just decisions and interpret our laws?
or
Do you think that the Congress and the President have the right to supercede the judicial system?

The whole situation is tragic for all involved...and I'm including the American Public in that, as well. How DARE the conservative right politicize this issue? What gall to try to supercede the court system. It's going to come back to bite them in the ass, mark my words.

Here is a question. If she dies from starvation/dehydration are her organs ruined? Would anyone be able to benefit from her liver? Kidneys? Lungs? Or are they pretty much no use?

"What the parents, politicians and courts have done to Terry is disgusting and God will punish them for it. God called Terry to come to Him--years ago--and they turned her into a machine, a Frankenstein, a monster. That is not God's way. That's disgusting. That's evil."
Is it evil or might it be that they are doing what they are doing for reasons they feel are right?
I agree that any person in her position should be allowed to die peacefully. However, there is another side to it. Her parents, I'm willing to bet, are not acting out of evil intentions but out of a futile hope that their daughter could possibly recover. You can't presume to know what is in their hearts and what motivates them.
As for the politicians...as much as I dislike most politicians, I have to believe that not all of them have evil intentions or that their only goal is to promte the agenda of their constituents for the sake of votes.
This is an issue that will always carry controversy and have two opposing sides. We need to respect the right of an individual to choose to die, the right of the next of kin saddled with the difficult decision to make the decidion they feel best and, yes, even respect the feelings of those who belive that euthenasia is wrong. It's not such a cut and dry issue that you can say those who feel one way are evil while those who feel another way are intellectually advanced and better people.
