Fair enough. I've watched Raymond since season one (when no one did) and always found it entertaining. Then again, I'm part of an Italian family, so I think I related to it a little more.

I like Doris Roberts, Peter Boyle, and some of the guest stars, but the main cast of that show pretty much does nothing for me.

Any hatred for Patricia Heaton is completely rational. She is a right wing fundamentalist republican bitch.

Props to opera diva Fredericka "Flicka" Von Stade for doing the "Ooh OOOOH!" part on the Star Trek theme.

Just a note that Frances Conroy was cited for her work on last season's "Six Feet Under," NOT the season that just ended. Episodes eligible for these Emmy awards had to be aired by May 31st.

The Emmys are consistently an unpredictable bunch because there are submission tapes that no one seems to be able to gauge the importance of. Series nominees submit six episodes (three tapes with two episodes each) but every voter only sees one submission tape per series nominees. Lead acting nominees submit one tape while supporting nominees submit two. Every member of the voting academy is randomly assigned to four non-overlapping committees (like you wouldn't be assigned to two categories having to do with comedies) and they watch the tapes for those four categories. Allegedly. They have to sign an affidavit saying that they viewed the tapes but I guess no one will ever know if they really do. Everyone votes in the series categories.

Essentially, while nominated for a season of work, you win for one or two episodes. I was pulling so hard for Mariska, who submitted a fantastic tape (the episode where she tracks down the cult leader who impregnated a 12-year-old girl, if anyone here watches her show) and elevates "SVU" everytime she is on. The bigger deal to me, though, was that Patricia Arquette beat Glenn Close in essentially an acting contest. I mean, WTF?

Huffman was a huge shock for me too and her character is such a drag but she's done a lot of stellar work over the years, especially on "Sports Night."

"ELR" won, I suspect, because "Desperate" is a soap opera (and not really a comedy) and "Arrested" won last year so that the Emmys could save the show and now that it's been renewed, they don't need to play television God anymore. I don't know. "ELR" really did submit its six best episodes while the others kind of faltered too.

I hate "Boston Legal," William Shatner, and James Spader.

I hate the "Will and Grace" got 15 nominations when it hasn't been funny in at least a decade and a half. At least.

I hate the utter randomness that is the presenting teams. Lauren Graham and Jennifer Love Hewitt? Mischa Barton and Adrien Grenier? Let the nominees present so at least if they lose they can partake in the ceremony.

And I hate how it was sort of like the Grammys.

It's not like the Emmys make a habit of rewarding shows for their final seasons. Only two other shows besides "ELR" have one for their goodbye years - "Barney Miller" and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." "Seinfeld" didn't. "Cheers" didn't. "I Love Lucy" didn't.

I agree with you that "Arrested Development" is a better show. But, honestly, it is not the type of show that the Emmys would normally reward. It is far too clever and complex for 99% of the people out there to understand. I think the great critical reviews in addition to wanting to help it get renewed last year helped it to win. I was (pleasantly) surpised by the win last year because it's not the type of thing the Emmys go for. Plus, "Scrubs" is also quirky and offbeat and I could see some potential "Arrested" fans going for "Scrubs" instead.

If I were voting for the Emmys, my vote would have gone to "Arrested" in a heartbeat. However, as someone who really takes the time to watch the submissions every year (and I post on a separate message board related to awards), I could see that "ELR" was a threat to win because it legitmately submitted the best 6 episodes it did this year (unlike "Desperate Housewives," which was about 50-50) and the Emmy voters proved a few years ago that when "ELR" submits its best, they like it and give it the win.

I like "Raymond" enough as a show and I think it's done enough for TV for the past 9 years that I didn't mind seeing it win, especially since "Arrested" had won last year and I suspect that "Desperate" will see its day in the sun. I was so so so turned off by the win for Patricia Arquette and the repeats for James Spader and William Shatner though. Those three I just don't understand the appeal of, probably much like you don't understand the continued appeal of "ELR."

My favorite part of the evening; Marcia Cross's dress. She looked amazing!

I posted what I did before because I thought you meant that the Emmy voters were just throwing Arrested Development a bone with its win last year. I was just annoyed at the suggestion that AD needs a pity-vote. I'd rather it be under-appreciated in the mainstream than have it sell itself out for the sake of ratings.


xxnewgirlxx, have you watched Arrested Development? Not just one episode because you couldn't find anything else on between the Simpsons and Family Guy, but watched multiple episodes? I understand that some shows are not everyone's cup of tea, but when a comedy show gets 3/5 Emmy nominations and the win for best comedy writing and is still one of the lowest rated shows on TV, I definitely agree with DivaBrigader's 1% assessment.

Do you know why I nearly peed in my pants laughing at Lucille 2's "Everyone thinks they're a Frank Sinatra" line, or Barry Zuckerkorn leaping over the plastic shark? It's not a presumptuous claim, it's a fact. If more people actually understood AD's humor and didn't need a traditional sitcom laugh track telling them when a joke just happened, fans wouldn't have to cross their fingers every spring hoping Fox will see past the ratings and renew it for another season.
