As someone who is obsessed with film and has been watching the Oscars faithfully since I was 10 years old I disagree. The Oscars are the only award show I make sure not to miss.
I was happy to see Conan back. Thought he did a great job last year and was great again this year Loved the opening of him being chased throught the Best Pic nominees Weapons style as Aunt Gladys.
And thank god they only performed two songs this year. The Academy has a poor track record of song nominees and this year was no exception. They performed the two songs people have heard of which left time for more awards.

Technically, there were (3) songs, including Josh Groban's performance, but I'm more curious about what you mean re: "a poor track record of song nominees". Meaning most viewers don't recognize the nominated song(s)?

I always watch it live along with the Red Carpet and after party coverage. There were a few things said that the censors were too late muting out that will probably not be heard on the replays.
There was supposedly a pre-taped piece that Conan did that was supposed to run at the end, other than the short one they showed, but E! said they ran out of time and didn't show it.

The unsung hero of the night was announcer Matt Berry, giving his signature flamboyant and not-quite correct stresses to almost everything he announced.

I thought Conan did quite well last year and his taped opening this year was great. His monologue, however, felt very disjointed and just wasn't funny enough. When you combine that with his usual antic pacing (physical movement, not joke timing) it was not the best start to the show.

Yeah he’s definitely more of a physical comedian. That’s why Jimmy Kimmel is better suited to host the show. I also wanted it to be more political than it was, maybe next year

I was totally fine with it being less political this year. It was a nice break and the theme was a sanctuary for celebration with a zen-like atmosphere. I think they achieved that. I watch a lot of NHK-World so I was totally onboard with the design.
