didn't they do this recently? How many times can you make the same list and call it new?

They expanded the scope of films to include more recent entries, and used a different panel of 'experts'. There were some huge disparities.

Speilbergs on that list quite a bit.... um "Saving Private Ryan" was an aweful film.

Wizard of Oz that low? Star Wars? Forrest Gump?

Toy Story ??????? What about Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast?

These lists seem to surface and change every week. So meeningless when they do that.

It seems odd that 'The Wizard of Oz' is only 10...but oh well.

Sad to say I have only seen about 10-12 of those. eep.

Is 'Toy Story' really that great??

They lost their credibility with including Forrest Gump into the mix. That movie sucked!

It was a great show-- this is the "Updated" list, where they re-polled people and came up with this list with quite a few changes. The Top ten for example, only had one film in the same place as 1997 (Citizen Kane stayed at #1).

I too was surprised that Oz dropped so (I think it was #2 last time) and really had to ponder if Singing in the Rain is a better film than The Wizard of Oz. That's a conversation starter for sure.

I think it's interesting to see how FEW recent films did well. I think you have to go all the way down to 50 to get a film made in the last ten years.

I agree with SNAFU.
I'm proud to say I've seen 89 of those films.
Or maybe that's an indication that I need to get out more.

These AFI lists are just a self-congratulatory joke.

I don't think there's a film on the list that isn't worth watching, actually. Even a movie that I don't like at all (Gump, ugh!) has some value- it's amazing visual effects and a peep into that weird 90's view of history.

My sister and I decided a few months back to watch all Top 100 (because we're big geeks that way). Of the films we've seen thus far, some notable removals from the 1997 list are Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Giant, and Rebel Without a Cause.

Of the new list, all I can say is I'm glad Titanic isn't higher up on the list.

I can't believe rebel was dropped.

I love Giant as well. My uncle was supposed to be in that film- but was told he was 'too pretty to be a mexican.'

I've seen 25 of the films on that list, and am rather ashamed by some of the ones that I haven't seen. Maybe that should be my goal for the rest of the summer? I know that I own at least 15 of the movies I haven't seen...

I adore James Dean. I was really looking forward to making my sister watch him (she's never seen any of his movies).

JoeK you have a good point. Every movie has some value to it. Even if it's just a trashy genre flick, it still captures where we are politically, socially and technologically.

I've seen 46 of the films on the list. I guess I have some work to do!

I'm surprised Goodfellas isn't higher on the list, but was glad to see The Godfather land where it did (even if I think it's better than Citizen Kane, but I digress).

I like Goodfellas a little better too. But I love them both! Whet's cool about the Godfather is how layered the family is. I think Godfather 2 makes Godfather 1 even better (if that makes sense).

But yes, Goodfellas is one of my all time favorite movies. I like mobster movies!

I'm always surprised how high Annie Hall places. And Appocalypse now should be higher IMO.
