"2. The ongoing delusion that Clint Eastwood's films are of any real interest whatsoever. There isn't a single one that I'd exhale to save from the flames. "
HAHA, Roscoe that was quite fantastic. I agree that it can be so fascinating to see who or what is deemed legendary and where it all comes from.
I never could understand why Citizen Kane seems cemented in as all time best film ever made. I wonder if any film will ever knock it out of that slot~
Jane - that's a good question.
If you go by imdb's list (which is the average person voting, Citizen Kane is down at number 23
(And sorry Clint Eastwood haters - there is at number 4 (That's "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly"). More disturbing -- The Wizard of Oz is number 102 on the list - not even in the top 100!

I'm tired of Raging Bull placing that high too.
It's good. But not THAT good.
And Wizard of Oz should be 4 or 5 at the least... NOT 10.
And Chinatown is not aging well. It was dreadfully boring the last time I watched it. And I used to love the film.
The only film of the last few years that deserves a mention on there is BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN - and it will be on the list at some point.
Well, if Gump can make it onto that list anything is possible, Munk.
I have seen 88 of the films on that list, and although I don't care for some of them nor agree with the ratings of others, I don't find it all that embarrassing a selection.

Odd. I first saw it only one or two years ago (and recently, as well) and I think it's fantastic. Terrific acting (Dunaway blows me away in this), smart direction, and one of my favorite screenplays ever.

I do not think that TOY STORY, GOODFELLAS, and PULP FICTION deserve to be on that list.

Agreed. However, there are many "recent" movies that I would consider to put up there:
Far from Heaven
Moulin Rouge (will probably be up there eventually, too)
AI: Artificial Intelligence (bring it on, bitch)
Million Dollar Baby
Chicago
Brokeback Mountain
The Truman Show
Shakespeare in Love
The English Patient
Remains of the Day
Howards End
Almost Famous
Mulholland Drive
The Pianist
Adaptation
Not sure if Children of Men is eligible.
Oh, and Pulp Fiction deserves its spot.
i LAUGHED when i saw RAGING BULL ... that is just so funny!
I'm not sure how many of those films are American bway86.
But where the hell is Network and Philadelphia Story?
Edit- Network is on there. And so is Lord Of the Rings which I also did not think was American.
Philadelphia Story is on there.
I can't believe a 10 time Academy Award Winning classic like West Side Story scores so low on the AFI list and not at all on the imdb list.....WTF?
This "list" is a huge joke.

Personally, they can't re-update every 10 years...not enough has happened...every 25, ok, I'll buy that...but TEN? And just because they felt bad for not including "Titanic" because it was too recent when the first list came out.

I've only seen 14 films on that list, and none of them were in the top 5. That's pretty sad. Oh, and I kinda hated Pulp Fiction.
I'm actually surprised Beauty and the Beast didn't make it onto that list, mostly because it was the only animated film ever nominated for Best Picture. I also would have put Mary Poppins on that list.
I bet it would be very interesting to sit in on these discussions in which they were evaluating the various movies and the criteria for "greatness".

It's hard to explain to someone who "Hated" Citizen Kane, but every moment, every shot, every element in that film is not only brilliant but absolutely ground breaking. I happen to think the story is fantasitc and well worth watching even if every other dazzling aspect (Performances, design, photography, sound) was removed, but I hear that complaint a lot so some people must find it dull.
If you watch other films of it's time, and then watch Kane, it's absolutely jaw droppingly ahead of it's time. One thing that I keep thinking about is that Welles used every second, every shot, every sound perfectly to tell his story. There is not so much as a paperclip out of place or even so much as a wasted second in that film.
Sorry-- It's so brilliant I could talk all night about it.
Citizen Kane is there because it is a great film -- but also because of its "firsts." Every film after it owes it a debt. Kane changed moviemaking forever.
I've seen 95 of the films on the list. Does a copy of "Intolerance" still exist? I thought it had been lost.

Wow - this is the first place I've looked where I haven't been the person who's seen the most, at 79. I'm very impressed, y'all!
From Here to Eternity being knocked off is a crime.
I've seen most of them because I'm old.

I'm old too-- and can remember the days when these films showed all the time on TV-- I remember watching Bridge on the River Kwai on TV with my Dad, Annual viewings of the Sound of Music & Oz, and King Kong was a feature on the "Afternoon Movie." Kids today don't know what they are missing!

I also think it's a bit interesting that Star Wars dropped three spots from the 1997 list, from 10 to 13, therein "proving" that the prequel trilogy has slightly hurt it's legacy of quality. This time, Return of the Jedi wasn't even on the 400 nomminated movies list.
Many films that I find completely mediocre, and many that I downright despise, are on that ridiculous list. Since when is Lawrence of Arabia an American film?
