So, some of you will recall that I am a huge fan of the South Beach way of eating. I still am, but I felt the need for some structure and discipline to push me past the plateau I have been on for a while. So, inspired by the great success of a good buddy of mine, I joined the Weight Watchers online program.
I still eat South Beachian, but I have found that the point system of Weight Watchers has helped me balance foods better and think more about how much of certain foods I eat--not before realizing just how many calories seemingly innocent food contains. I also find that Weight Watchers allows you to eat naughty foods without guilt--you only suffer the loss of points to eat upon. Additionally, I'm given that much more inspiration to maintain exercise as you get more points for doing so.
It's only been a week, but I know I have already pushed through my plateau. It's a great feeling. :)
So, I start this thread to allow others to come out of the closet and for others to become inspired if they are not currently. Also, those of you who have been on it for some time may have great advice and be able to answer questions from others. Please share how you have incorporated other programs with WW as I have done with South Beach. Sometimes I try to incorporate South Beach and Eat Right 4 Your Type ideals. And, now I am adding WW to that mix for the structure.
And, as a last note, I want to discourage nasty comments on this thread. If knowing about moderation and exercise was enough and as easy as it sounds, I and others wouldn't need to do programs like this to keep the weight down. Some of us have been cursed with horrible metabolisms and other obstacles.

"Some of us have been cursed with horrible metabolisms and other obstacles."
Amen to that!
I'm so glad you found something that worked for you. I am too scattered to try to follow a set 'diet'. I do follow South Beach in principle, but I still have regular sugar, white rice on occassion, things like that.
The funny thing is, I've been trying to lose 15 pounds since last Novemeber. I went back on a pretty set diet, worked out, etc., and did not lose one pound. Suddenly, about 5 or 6 weeks ago, I started losing it, and I have now lost almost 10 pounds. Talk about a plateau.

Posted: 7/24/05 at 1:13pmI really want to lose weight, and I keep trying to get around to dieting, but I never do it. However, for the past month I've been excercising for a half hour every morning for five days a week. Don't mind any typos, I'm not feeling well (fast day).

Posted: 7/24/05 at 1:20pmI've never done WW, but I have tried Atkins and I LOVED it (I lost 30 pounds in like, 5 months). But once I got off of it, it's been really hard to do it again. So thank you for mentioning how much you like WW. I've been thinking of trying it, so now I have another reason to do it.

Posted: 7/24/05 at 1:23pmI know people who've lost weight with Weight Watchers, and it was pretty painless. It's nice because it's reasonable- Atkins works by giving you the metabolism of a diabetic, which somehow doesn't sound too healthy to me.

and for diabetics or sugar sensitive folk like me , atkins runs havoc with your emotions!
I've tried Atkins on two seperate days and by noon I'm in tears.

Wimp!
When you do South Beach or Atkins phase 1, you HAVE to eat a lot to get past the first two days. Just have at it with the sugar free jello, hummus and veggies, string cheese, ricotta cremes, sugar free candies, Crystal lite, and water.
Get through those first two weeks, and you will feel free of most if not all cravings! You will have already cleaned up your heart much! AND, you will lose 10 - 15 pounds at the same time!

Cleaned up your heart?
Atkins is just plain unhealthy. Yes, it will help you lose weight quickly, but over the long term a more conventional, food-pyramid-style diet will lose you just as much weight, and you won't have to turn your metabolism upside-down or stuff yourself with nutritional supplements to make up for what you're missing, a la Atkins.
When Atkins says we eat too many processed carbs, he's totally right. But replacing them with meat isn't going to help, unless raising your cholesterol level is what you're going for. You should be replacing them with complex carbs instead. But people would rather be told their steaks are healthy than eat whole grains and vegetables.

I don't know about Atkins, but with South Beach, you do NOT cut out grains/carbs and veggies. You do cut out the grains for the first two weeks, but that is it.
And, yes, it cleans up your heart--that is how the diet was created--to get people heart healthy. Weight loss was a natural side effect. Thus, the diet took off.

Posted: 7/24/05 at 2:57pmI'm pretty sure the AHA does not approve, but the late doctor would probably put that down to the damn diet establishment.

What are you talking about, Plum?
Atkins is dead. The South Beach dude is still alive.

Chita...
The only difference in my routine is that instead of going to the gym in the afternoon I'm biking between 15 and 30 miles 3 times per week. Maybe it was the change in exercise routine that broke the plateau.

Posted: 7/24/05 at 3:46pmArgh, weight loss. I'm at 176 and want to get down to 150 - I'm a 5'7" female, but built a lot more like my muscular, high-school-wrestling-team father than my supermodel-slender mother (so unfair). Right now I'm trying to concentrate simply on taking better care of myself - getting 8 hours of sleep, drinking plenty of water, walking instead of taking the bus around town, and eating a wide variety of foods - than focusing on losing weight, but a few pounds have melted off in the process. I know that pounds lost quickly are often regained quickly, so I'm just trying to instill some healthful habits. Granted, I'll still splurge on a margarita or a slice or two of pizza every once in a while, just so I don't get frustrated and pig out, but I've really been pretty good.

Well, you can't cut out pleasurable foods--and WW doesn't seem to ask you to. I love that!

Posted: 7/24/05 at 3:57pmI want to lose weight...but this past summer, I had some major weight swings, so I'm just putting that off for now. I don't HAVE to lose weight...so maybe losing weight is the wrong term. I want to get "back in shape". Hopefully, ballet will help along with that.

Welcome to the program Jerby! I've been on WW for 7 weeks and just hit my first small goal (to lose 20 lbs before August). For anyone considering WW I highly recommend it. It is the easiest thing I have ever tried, I have really had no difficulty staying on program.
I promise I don't work for WW, I'm just so excited to have found something that works!

I'm going to go for it. Any promotion codes out there before I sign up?
It's funny, I always made fun of Weight Watchers. It seemed silly with it's points and all. but I just saw a co-worker I had not seen in months and he looks great!. He's 48 and in 6weeks lost 15 pounds. He's doing weight watchers and he says it's the only thing that has worked. He does the points.

edit: for the promo code, PM me lol.

Count me in as another one who loves WW.
I actually enjoy meetings (there's a cute guy who runs it- which makes a BIG plus), and once you get into the routine of counting points it's pretty easy. Of all the diets out there it's the one with the soundest nutritional foundation.
I'm a lifetime member and need to pump up my comittment to it. I have had a lax spring and summer and I have a closetful of nice fall cothes I want to fit into and I hate playing 'pants roulette'!
