Posted: 2/12/15 at 11:43amIt's either To Kill a Mockingbird or Huckleberry Finn. Both perfect.

My thoughts are:
To Kill A Mockingbird

I'd probably vote for To Kill a Mockingbird, as well.
Beloved by Toni Morrison is an interesting possibility, too.
I'd toss out The Awakening by Kate Chopin and Cane by Jean Toomer, though they might more accurately be called a novella and a story cycle, respectively.

In all seriousness:
For Whom the Bell Tolls - Hemingway
Native Son - Wright
A Confederacy of Dunces - Toole
The Stand - King

I admit to having read Joey's choice many times. Maybe it could be "The Greatest Badly Written American Novel."
I vote for GATSBY, but I wouldn't mind MOCKINGBIRD.
Those voting for GWTW need to reread it. It might come in second to VALLEY OF THE DOLLS in the "Badly Written" category.
#22The Great American Novel
Posted: 2/12/15 at 9:05pmDon't get how this is even quantifiable. Huck Finn Published: December 1884, so, America in the 19th century? Kimda a different America from even Grapes of Wrath Published: April 14, 1939 or To Kill a MockingBird Published: July 11, 1960. What about The Colour Purple? Or As I Lay Dying? All Great. All American. Each a different America. So what qualifies as "THE GREAT-EST"?

Posted: 2/12/15 at 9:09pmIt's like a party game, sabrelady. Any of the books you mention might qualify, IMO.
