LMAO! I agree...That is my favorite part of the movies.
Sam: What we need is a few good taters.
Gollum: What's taters, precious? What's taters, eh?
Sam: Po-tay-toes. Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew. Lovely big golden chips with a nice piece of fried fish.
Sam: Even you couldn't say no to that.
Gollum: Oh yes we could. Spoilin' nice fish. Give it to us raw and wrigglin'. You keep nasty chips.
Sam: You're hopeless.

I love how, in a 3 hour film that is a part of an even longer trilogy, they spent a generous amount of time on that.

a great moment
So many great moments, enough to fill an entire movie season. Can I choose one per movie?
FELLOWSHIP: Gandalf's confrontation with the Balrog. "You shall not pass!"
TWO TOWERS: Sam's ending monologue (a brilliant way to tie up the three story strands). "It's like the stories, Mr. Frodo, the ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were."
RETURN OF THE KING: Gandalf's conversation with Pippin about death. "White shores...and beyond, a far green country."

Owing to my incredibly sappy nature, my favorite moment came toward the end of RETURN OF THE KING when Arwen steps out at Aragorn's coronation and he goes to kiss and embrace her.
I know I already posted, but there are so many moments I don't want to neglect:
FELLOWSHIP:
-- Gandalf's conversation with Frodo in the Mines of Moria. "So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."
-- Sam running after Frodo's boat. "I made a promise, Mr. Frodo, a promise."
TWO TOWERS:
-- The Ents marching to war. "It could be we march to our death...the last march of the Ents."
-- Gandalf and the Rohan horsemen coming to the rescue at Helm's Deep.
RETURN OF THE KING:
-- The catapulting of huge slabs of stone at the Siege of Minas Tirith
-- The BEAUTIFUL and heartbreaking scene near the end with Frodo and Sam on that rock, surrounded by lava, and Sam regretting the things he never did: "Rose Cotton dancin'....she had ribbons in her hair. If I were ever to marry....it would've been her! It would've been her." The subsequent image with the eagles coming out from the clouds could be an Old Masters masterpiece.

BlueWizard, Gandalf's conversation with Pippin makes me cry every time I watch it, without fail.
These films are just MAGIC to me. I so love them.
And, I am always doing the "Taters? WHAT'S TATERS??" "PO-TA-TOES!" moment. lol
Ok yeah I'm a dork. :)
Cruel_Sandwitch. I think this was made for you in mind :)

Agreed, there are a lot of great moments, including the ones already mentioned. As far as serious moments, I'm going to have to cast my vote with Sam's "stories that really matter" speech in Two Towers. But on a lighter note, I'm going to throw in one more scene I love: early on in Two Towers, when Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli are surrounded by Eomer and his riders - Gimli starts mouthing off, and Legolas starts pointing arrows, and Aragorn just has this wonderful "Will you two knock it off before you get us all killed!?" expression.
I also love "Fool of a Took!"

Again... Sam's monologue at the end of The Two Towers... *sniff*
And the very end of Return of the King. Nuff said.
-- Gandalf and the Rohan horsemen coming to the rescue at Helm's Deep.
I agree! That part always makes me cry. And from ROTK, I like the part where Legolas brings down the giant elephant all by himself, he is oh so kick ass! I also really like the part where the Roheirem (I know I'm spelling that wrong!) start screaming as they charge to attack. That part makes me cry everytime too!
Oh yes! For some inexplicable reason, I completely forgot about the majesty of the Rohirrim charging across the Pelennor Fields. I believe THAT is my favourite scene in the entire trilogy.
"Ride, ride for ruin, and the world's ending!"
I can't believe no one's mentioned Pippin's song in ROTR while Faramir and his men ride to certain death. God, heartbreaking.
My favorite scenes are any with Merry and Pippen. I love me some Dom and Billy.

I was about to say "I can't believe no one's mentioned that moment."
When he's singing, and the steward is eating, and the horses are charging across the field. It gives me shivers.
Even just reading these moments is giving me chills. I have to watch these soon.
I can't believe no one's mentioned Pippin's song in ROTR while Faramir and his men ride to certain death. God, heartbreaking.
I can't believe I didn't mention that, either. There are just too many phenomenal moments in the trilogy. I'm with Jerby, the whole thing is MAGIC.
My heart stopped for about a minute when I first saw Gandalf fall in FOTR. I had never read the books and was so absorbed that I forgot there were two more parts coming out. I started to cry in the theater. I was like, he can't fall, he a main character. My heart dropped along with him...
I agree, the entire trilogy is masterful and pure magic. They are my favorite films and I love the cast.
So many of my favorite moments have already been mentioned. Above all my favorite moment is Gandalf talking to Frodo about Gollum in the mines of Moria. "All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you."
Eowyn is one of my favorite characters. The scene between Eowyn and Wormtongue is fantastic b/c of the tension between them. And her big moment to shine in ROTK: "I am no man!"

BlueWizard-
I agree with all of your choices.
FUNNY MOMENT!!! When the fellowship is in the Mines of Morea, listen to the way that Gandalf exclaims "Gimli!" as Gimli runs towards the tomb. It sounds if he's coughing, or something.
Also, in Two Towers... When Gollum goes, "Of yes we could! Spoil a nice fish... Give it to us raw and wrrrriggling!" LMAO
I love Aragorn's reaction when Gimli asks him to throw him during the battle of Helm's Deep. Aragorn's double take is classic. :) "Don't tell the elf!" LOL.
In "Return of the King", when Sam asks Frodo if he remembers the taste of strawberries in the Shire, and Frodo says he can't recall the taste of food, the sound of water or the touch of grass, and Sam says: "Then let us be rid of it...once and for all. Come on, Mr. Frodo. I can't carry it for you...but I can carry you." I cry, every single time.
Two great moments, both involving Gandalf.
There's the very grand one when he brings the reinforcements at Helm's Deep (the lighting and the way he crashes into the orc army).
Also, the moment when the trio confront him in the woods, thinking him to be Saruman and he leaps onto the rock and reveals himself.
