Wow, thanks! Good performances all around. Adam sounds fantastic. I like Idina better than expected in the acting portions, but her Nobody's Side could be fiercer.
I love Idina and Kerry's I Know Him So Well.
Craww, I agree about Idina probably being too girlish for the role. I guess I'm just relieved that I haven't heard any ear-splitting screeches out of her yet, so I'm probably being easy on her.

Yeah, the "why am I falling apart?" could have been more exciting. I'd have to hear the whole thing to see how I feel about the orchestrations.
Idina's diction is generally bad, so she was probably basically unintelligible with the sound problems.
Anyway, I hope this concert leads to a full production. It sounds like they're getting the book issues worked out.

I think it's always been a very talky show with a lot of exposition. A fair amount of it is done by the commentators, but a lot of it does come from the main characters. I think that can either be intriguing or tedious, depending. I can't foresee it ever being a huge audience hit as is, but hopefully it could have some kind of following.

if it ever did come here again I already know I can kiss all that money I've been pocketing away good bye. And if Adam does come to be Freddie, Tink may be looking for a loan, lol.
Two weeks ago I flew to Seattle to see DayDreamer's production of Chess. No matter at what theater level, it is so thrilling to hear the songs sung live. And their Freddie could really belt out Pity, so I was happy.
They should use Michael Cerveris as the narrator again. How he managed to make The Story of Chess sound dirty is beyond me.

Idina Menzel as Florence Vassy (the American delegate who goes with the Russian) was captivating. If slightly too abrasive in the quieter numbers, there was no disputing the quality of the voice, and the magic of her performance made us appreciate Florence as the most wronged character in the whole affair. Josh Groban gave both purposefulness of character and clarity of voice as the Russian, Sergievsky, whilst Adam Pascal as the American hit all the high notes in this most demanding of tenor roles.

"whilst Adam Pascal as the American hit all the high notes in this most demanding of tenor roles."
Of course he did, who do they think he is? But seriously, glad to hear they all got a good review.
Thanks for the link, Motortink. (hee, that rhymes)
I have the album, and I really like it. Lots of great singers on it.
Love "Song For New Orleans"
and the others for that matter.

I have just returned from my London trip where I saw the Monday show of Chess. Adam was amazing. I had never heard or seen him live before so to see him in Chess was unbelivable for me, and he was definitley one of the highlights there. Even my two friends were blown away by him, and they haven't been big fans of him before, so happy about that.
Pity the child he sung beautifully, even though he was drowned out/overpowered by the music on the last couple of notes.
There were some sound problems as has been pointed out by everyone else, but not as bad as many want it to bee. I didn't have the best seats but I could hear the singing fine 90% of the time, even though I was way high up.
Here are some pictures, only the ones from the program are mine, others are found on other sites. Didn't see them posted here, so sorry if they already were.

don't ever worry about double posting pictures. The more the merrier. Glad you had a good time! I hate that I can't always see images at work, argh, but gives me something to look forward to when i get home I guess.
I think your links are broken? Only the first one is showing up for me.

I think I'd really like Idina's dress if it fit better in the bust. And I think the belt is too big/wrong/illfitting? Something.
Kerry Ellis looks really pretty there, because she's not sporting that wicked bitchface she has in 90% of the photos of her.
Picture #5 is very amusing.
(...based on what I've now heard of the concert, which would be everything, I think Adam was generally as solid as he was at Actor's Fund, but something was missing in his timbre. I didn't like the tempo of the orchestrations. Idina sounded strange, squeaky, and girlish. The moments where she was on were wonderful, but otherwise she just sounded completely out of sorts in the role. Kerry Ellis sounded good, but...nothing that I'd fall in love with through an audio and in that role. The Grobes is my fav, just to be contrary.)

I agree with all of this. I loved Idina in the first, small doses, but listening to her sing the whole score, she sounds incredibly grating and childish. I think that Adam sounds great on the whole, but strains more this time around (and I wonder whether "the fools never learn" was lowered anyway, or because he had trouble with it). Kerry is good, but Sutton Foster gave a more memorable performance in the Actor's Fund concert. I'm still not sure what I think of the song placement, but some of the tempos definitely dragged. The faster "Where I Want to Be" works way better than the tempo they used, although they did a good job with that segment of "The Deal"
