The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 14, version 2.0

It's not the fact that Adam did it for the money, but the fact that Adam initially did it *only* for the money, not the experience or out of love of the show. I don't really know much about artists, but I think that artists should have reasons for doing what they do in addition to money, and that they should be at least a bit emotionally attached to what they are doing in addition to being practical about it. Actually, this can apply to anything. A scientist can be emotionally attached to something too. The point is, if you're passionate about something, show passion, not just practicality.

Sorry if that was a bit of a rant. :)

Exactly. And I'm certainly not saying that's not okay; but especially with regards to a show like Rent, it would be nice to see an interest that stretches behind the financial.

Chloe, It's old news that Adam has no filter. In interviews, he can be a little rude and tacky. Of course he needs to be paid, but the fact that it's his motivator and that he's so open about it is just plain uncomfortable to hear. Especially when he seems to be making poor choices on this basis.

His need to be paid for his work is obvious, and trumpeting it is bad manners. Everyone needs to eat, but that doesn't excuse abysmal table manners.

I think part of why people are being a little less forgiving this time around is because it had seemed like he was maturing. Now it seems as if he's regressing. Especially after certain behaviors (not just personal, but public...retarted, anyone?) have shown how ignorant he can be at his worst.

I kind of prefer the OBCR, since it doesn't include as much dialogue and you can just listen to the music but it's not as intriguing, if that makes any sense. Once I have the visuals to go along with revival recording, I'm sure that will change.

The Doyle revival was one of the two best things I've ever seen on stage, and, needless to say, I love the leading man, but I still listen to the OBCR more often than any of the revival recordings. I was hooked after hearing it for the first time, so I always go back to it. Plus...it's just iconic. I hope you enjoy seeing the PBS broadcast. Exactly. Adam doesn't have to actually HAVE less interest in the money, but he shouldn't continually discuss it publically in press. It's just tacky and inappropriate. Find one interview or article where Anthony mentions his salary with regards to the return. He certainly didn't do it for free either, but he also doesn't make a point of constantly mentioning money as his motivation. It's not that Adam has to have the same affection towards Rent as Anthony to be "allowed" to be in it, but I don't see why we can't criticize his indisputable lack of class.

Adam...is stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Not literally (lol), but he does have a very interesting situation that isn't being dealt with in the best way possible. Also, I don't think Adam's ever really learned how to deal with press/public.

Anthony is very affectionate towards Rent. It would be hard for Adam (or any of the cast members)to be as affectionate, but they were all at different points in their lives.

Yeah. It's always been this way, though; like Craww said, he's never had a filter. And while brutal honesty can be admirable, not knowing when to stop talking can backfire.

Kind of like it is now....

I wonder, has no one brought any of these issues to Adam's attention (family, friends, ect.)? It's hard not to notice, especially the press thing.

I'm not sure what the "requirements" are, so to speak, but I do know of some Broadway actors that I'd consider to be at a similar level who work with publicists. I thought he was working with one a few years ago, but I can't remember for sure, nor do I have any idea of that person is still in the picture.

Hmm...or maybe he just isn't willing to pay a publicist, hence the whole informal website thing.

Did anyone see the recent Theater Talk with Raul Esparza and Ian McShane? In it Ian McShane says almost the exact same thing Adam has said. He was asked why he does what he does and his answer was for a paycheck. You can say all the noble things you want about the art of acting, but it is their job.

chloe...just want to wish you a speedy and full recovery....

I tread here very lightly, as some know...because I am to old to get involved in the unending "debates"....but I do love to lurk.....Everyone here is on their own personal paths....but do not fault adam, or anyone, for doing what NEEDS to be done....and "feeling like a rock star" everynight......and getting paid for that....is nothing to sneeze at.....yes, building a career and taking risks sounds great...but when you have mouths to feed and a home life to keep afloat,.....most will do what they must to get it done.......IMO....only.....thanks R!

Oh, for the last time, that is NOT what's going on here. Nobody is faulting Adam for working for money. That's being far too simplistic about it, and twisting the words on the page. If you love to lurk so much, didn't you see the past 18 times that that's been said? And yet you still lecture.

This is his job. That's why we have jobs. So we can get paid. It's a necessity of life. We all understand that. But I repeat; why are we acting like these are two totally mutually exclusive ideas?

sooo not lecturing...i have no right to do that..just offering my opinion as a working person who has taken jobs...in spite of what I believed...so that I could put food on a table.....yet again, being attacked for my opinion.....

Huh. Reads like you are!

Ironically, I am soooo not attacking. Come on; this has been explained multiple times, in posts which you have presumably read, and yet you still feel the need to chime in as though people are saying things it has been clearly stated that they are NOT. And you expect people not to be irritated by that?

"And I'm sure Ian McShane doesn't only act because it's a way to earn money, there has to be at least a little passion involved. Did he say I'm only doing this particular show for the money? No, obviously acting is his job and what he does to support himself and his family. However, to say you're only doing one certain show for money, as if you're above it, is what I think is rubbing people the wrong way about Adam's comments."

But in the Broadway.com interview Adam answers a lot of other questions with honesty and even passion.

So how do you feel about playing Roger again at this point in your life?

I love it. I'm really excited to do it, and I'm glad it's a short amount of time because I won't get tired of it. Every show will be a lot of fun, and that's the way I want to remember Rent. I had a great experience making the movie, but by the end of my last stage experience with Rent I was feeling tired and busted and broken. I look forward to having my final memories of the show being that I really enjoyed myself.

Why is it Ok for Ian McShane to say I am doing it because I want to, AND because they pay me, but not for Adam to say the same thing? Because we want to keep the illusion of art for art's sake? Adam has always come across as completely honest, about his successes and his failures.

Yeah, my roommate went to the video store. They didn't have Shakespeare in Love, so she got Pride and Prejudice. The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 14, version 2.0 I just needed something interesting. I've been staring at the TV all day, and there's been absolutely nothing good on. Watching it now.
