okay, I agree with that, but it was stated that Adam "prostituted" himself and "bragged" that he only returned to Rent for the money, it was those statements were what bothered me. I think some of us felt those were harsh and just wrong.

Which Pride and Prejudice?
I love the miniseries with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle... and the one from 2005 with Keira Knightley. I've watched both far too many times.
As for Adam, we all know he's a bit arrogant... but he really does seem to mean well most of the time. Get over it?

I never said Adam prostituted himself, I said he prostituted Rent. Please stop accusing me of saying things I didn't (which everyone can read for themselves).

I didn't see the context of the Ian McShane quote, nor have I witnessed a series of similar comments from him. Because I don't know anything about Ian McShane. For all I know he's a cantankerous bastard, and he was wrong too. Maybe he's cool. IDK, LOL, whatevs.
I've discussed and noted and praised Adam for how genuine he is, when his work and his words have merited it. The flip side of the same coin is offering criticisms when they're merited. Just as it's not a performer's job to be nice to his fans, it's not a fan's job to be nice to the performer. That's a tricky social contract, and Adam's personal clauses and stipulations for said contract seem to change arbitrarily.
I've discussed and noted and praised Adam for how genuine he is, when his work and his words have merited it. The flip side of the same coin is offering criticisms when they're merited. Not to play devil's advocate, because I fully agree with what you all have said about Adam's career choices. And it definitely IS tacky to talk about salary multiple times in interviews. I think we can all agree that a good manager would do Adam good.
But, in regard to what Emcee said:

Do you think that if he did go into this without ever mentioning money and only talking about his passion for the show - that we would even buy it? I remember the night that Anthony first leaked the news of the return - 90% of this thread was groaning and saying "that's so sad," "can't he do better," "this is two steps backward," etc.

"Taking steps backward" is almost too proactive a term for it. More like a leisurely slope, like when a full body yawn leads to a more reclining position.

The Pride and Prejudice miniseries with Firth and Ehle is divine.

Not necessarily steps backward, but steps in the wrong direction. And all of these steps (the website, Larry on his new album, the talking about salary to the press, ect.) are becoming parts of a bigger problem, which is that Adam isn't using his full potential.

misschung, we intended the money conversation to be directly in reference to the overall problem. It only got into discussing his salary in the press because certain posters diverted the conversation when they didn't believe Adam ever mentioned it, so it disrupted the intended meaning.
As LePetiteFromage said last night, it's not just that he's doing Rent for money, it's that if he needs the money, he should be attempting to earn it instead of waiting for offers to come to him. He's not George Clooney or Brad Pitt where that's a viable option; he's a lazy, out of work actor that's thinking of every excuse in the book for why he shouldn't have to grow up and get a "real job." He doesn't want a career, he wants a handout, and he's going to keep using Rent as his own personal welfare system as long as "fans" let him get away with it.

You never know with Rent fans. The Rent LJ community had to stop allowing "Rent moments" to be posted because people believed every mention of the East Village, New York City, AIDS and heroin to be an intentional reference to Rent. The mod had to make a post reminding them that AIDS and heroin DO exist outside the Rent world.
