My mom never let me have anything that wasn't sealed, or any chocolate. She was so strict about my sugar intake - it was like torture!
Actually, it's funny you mentioned the money, because when my mom and her siblings were kids, her older brother would save his Halloween candy for months. When she and her sister ran out, he'd sell them his - way overpriced, of course.
I think there's some candy - mostly non chocolate - that's okay to eat if you have food allergies. I'm sure it's still a measly fraction of what you collect trick-or-treating, though
