Yeah. I can't get into the other versions.

From what I've noticed, fan usually only becomes a dirty word when applied to something that is primarily popular with young people. For example, being a fan of a TV show like 24 or House isn't going to attract much attention, but being a fan of a TV show like The OC will get you pegged as a superficial teenybopper with bad taste.

"There was this one time an alarm went off - it was in the middle of '24.' That's just wrong. Everyone knows everyone was watching '24' at that time." --NYU student quoted in the Washington Square News about students ignoring the frequent fire alarms in dorms

Very true, Jessica, even within the Broadway community.

Very true, BG. I used to like The O.C....sigh. I guess all of my guilty pleasures are coming out tonight.

And the Chess concert is amazing. I wasn't at all familiar with the show until I heard it.

BG - I completely agree.

I've been reluctant lately to talk about RENT or even Broadway for that matter for fear of stirring up RENT movie and Wicked fangirl incidents. For example, there was a meeting for my Broadway Club last week and we were deciding between some shows to see in June. When the leader of the club mentioned Wicked (she said it very quietly, hehe), five girls that I know are not true theatre-goers started freaking out. A pen flew by my head, missing me by an inch.

I'm especially careful about RENT. I only really talk about it with fans of the show that I know, because I've found that they sometimes are less fangirly than the movie fans. I have a friend who loved the movie and when I bring up RENT or anything that can be connected to RENT, she goes nuts. Now, I won't deny that I'm a bit obsessed, but I don't jump up and down and shout lyrics when it's mentioned.

It's unfair, but when a certain group of fans act hysterical and silly, they taint everyone else.

Yeah, I like to keep my obsession on the inside. That way at least I'm not drawing attention to my madness. :)

On a REALLY random note, my roommate's fish is clearly dead and has been for two days now. But she has either not noticed or is just refusing to dispose of it. Do I flush it? It's kind of creeping me(and my fish which are in a separate tank) out.

My brother just got a fish. It's some new fad in his dorm (meh, college kids). The ironic thing is that he has a 55 gallon tropical fish tank at home that he never took care of and makes us take care of now that he's away at school.

Flush it.

Flush it. It's not like she'd want to keep it, right? Or, you could tell her it's dead before you do anything.

We don't really speak. Hurray for passive agressive roommates.

But yeah if it's still there by the time she goes out to get wasted tonite, I'm flushing it. Poor fish. re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part nine

Here's something to cheer us all up:

My dad's credit card is right next to my computer, and my parents are nowhere in sight.

Oh the possibilities...re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part nine

I'm not your average teenager, broke and dying for a credit card. On the contrary, my parents always come to me to borrow cash if they need it and don't want to go to the bank. re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part nine

Right, being a baseball fan is considered more normal by our society, hence it's more acceptable.

But then things get tricky. What about someone who considers himself a huge fan of opera? Though opera isn't really popular in today's society, it's still considered like...a really classy thing. Does the opera fan get more respect than...the OC fan? The OC problably has more fans but opera's considered classier.

Oh btw, I don't see why it matters, but at least when the Major League Baseball season is going on, games are essentially every day. I mean maybe the team averages one off day a week. Other sports, like basketball and hockey, have lots of off days. But yes, Broadway is year-round and Baseball isn't. Wanted to clarify just in case.

"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli

Well I think in the case of opera, you don't tend to think of its fans as the hysterical crowd.

When we think of fans of The O.C. we think of screaming girls. And sadly this is becoming much of the B'way fanbase--at least for certain shows. So it's becoming easier for people to make generalizations.

There have been plenty of crazy opera fans, though probably more in the past than now. There are stories of men unhitching the horses of a diva's carriage and pulling it through the streets. In the past opera music, especially the 19th century Italian kind, was the popular music of its day. People in Prague used to whistle Mozart tunes on the street.

Very true Chloe.

Verdi's funeral had streets filled for miles because he was a national hero for Italy (there are pictures...check it out...it's pretty insane).

I could go on about all kinds of hilarious things (women wearing certain composers headbands to show support, women passing out at concerts because someone was just so amazing) in classical music, but I'll control my geek self re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part nine

I find it interesting that opera is so looked upon as a "classy" thing to do, because most operas popular in their day, particularly from Mozart's day on, were popular with the common people (yes, the aristocracy and upper class were as well...but they didn't make "hits" so to speak). It was the thing to do for a night of entertainment. Then again, there wasn't really a split in classical and "pop" music so to speak...at least the way it is now...

I see opera every once in a while. Do you have a favorite, Amber? Mine is The Marriage of Figaro.

ETA: Not really allowed here, Angela. I remember hearing an audio track of it once somewhere, and it's not really that good. Mark's part isn't really in Daphne's range so she was trying to transpose a lot of things, and it didn't work out that well. Updated On: 4/8/06 at 11:44 PM

I'm not a really big opera fan...but since I'm a voice music major, you kind of deal with it and slowly accept it.

I think Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni are probably (at least amongst) the best you could ask for. They're just in so many ways perfect. Granted, we're talking Mozart composing his favorite thing...of course it's going to be amazing! (I'm going to see Don Giovanni in October at HGO...woot!)

I also like Mozart's singspiels (particularly The Impresario)...note: singspiels are quite a bit more like musical theatre, spoken dialogue instead of recitatives, etc.

I'm really not keen on later operas. I like Wagner for his music, but not his complicated, German "we're the best" stories. Gilbert and Sullivan operettas are fun...as well as some French opera comique (Offenbach)...grand, ridiculous, and satire is always good re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part nine
