I've never thought of that, but it could be. And it's certainly quite a bit... gentler!

Or maybe (and here's where I know I'm going into the realm of overanalysis)... he means "book of endings" figuratively in that he doesn't want to end up like the cliche victim of a celebrity stalker story, which seems more sinister. It would kind of make sense to fear for his safety when dealing with a truly obsessed fan. He does talk about putting up a new alarm system, after all. I think I like the first idea better, but since it's sort of a cryptic phrase it seems pretty open to interpretation.

I kind of think it's both. Like, he doesn't want to be that guy, and he's also letting people know that he's got walls up.

I googled "Adam Pascal" ages ago to see who was that guy playing Rosario's love interest. Well, I never got anything so I figured he was somebody from Broadway, obviously OBC but not a "star" or anything.

Later after the movie came out the Rent boards always had somebody saying how they hated him because of "Book of Endings" and it got me soo curious because of all the heat he was getting. I had to find out what the hell "Book of Endings" was about!

When I did (like a month ago, lol) I instantly thought that he wasn't ready for fame beyond Broadway.

Now, I don't mean that as rude it was just the first thing that popped into my head. I don't know him and seriously I just REALLY love his voice, he just sings like.. I don't even know, he has an amazing voice and I can't imagine what he'd do if given more roles.

But I wonder if that song could be the difference. Like, maybe one day he'll be in something big and somebody will say, "don't pay attention to him look what he wrote about us", or something like that. I mean, that's what happened with RENT: The Movie. All of a sudden, new fans were getting the, "oh, don't be fooled he a grade A jerk" line and people can really be turned off by that and he'll never gain them back because that will always be the first impression of AP as a 'real person'. They have no way to know any different. These are the days of IMBD, LJ and MySpace, people like that can really hurt his ability to recruit new fans.

Anyway, I'm sorry if this is wayyy too long.

Hm. My personal opinion on the song is that some people are taking it way too seriously -- especially (but not only) given the fact that he came out and said it was tongue-in-cheek. The people who are like "I used to be a fan but now I hate him because he hates his fans!" I think... are being sort of silly about it, because my take there is that if you're offended by it, you have a reason, and yeah, you should be concerned. If it insults you, then maybe it is about you. I think the song is also a bit of a leap on Adam's part, because if people are unaware of his "sense of humor" (used loosely), they're also more prone to think it means he straight-up hates his fans, and because if that is someone's only glimpse of Adam as a real person, it could very well be a turn-off. On that last note, however, if people are taking that song as their only glimpse into who he is, well, I'd have to wonder where they think the rest of his song lyrics come from... the sky? Those also come from who he is as a person, and some are quite beautiful and intelligent. And additionally, I guess if the new fans were detered by people saying that he's a jerk... well, shouldn't they be into him for his talents, anyway?

I've taken the 'i'm just pretending' line to not necessarily mean that he, Adam, is pretending to be a cool guy or whatever. But that he is an actor. Therefore Adam is 'pretending' to be Roger or whatever character he is playing. And a lot of people have trouble separating a man from his character. So he's basically saying 'you don't really know me as a man. You think you know me because you think I'm Roger. Don't idolize me.'

That's my take on it, anyway. For what it's worth.

And I agree with what Em said. I've only seen Adam in concert once and I've never met him. Though, I can definately see how he would give the impression that he doesn't like his fans. But I can also tell that he has a different sense of humor. Purely judging on the Rent movie commentary and his jokes during the concert- you just have to be light-hearted about what he says. I think people just get too intense about everything instead of just sitting back and enjoying his music/acting.

She, when you say you googled Adam recently and didn't get anything, I assume you mean not something you related to him being a movie star, since even before the movie you would have gotten about a quarter million pages.

Other than that, I agree with what you're saying about how easily influenced some of the younger potential fans can be. Lexi and I were discussing the same kind of thing privately concerning Rentsecrets. However, this idea didn't start with Book of Endings. When he was originally in Rent on Broadway, some people said similar things about him for avoiding fans after the show, and for some of the things he said. At that time he wasn't planning on continuing in theater and definitely rubbed some people the wrong way.

He's since stated that he knows he screwed up in dealing with the sudden celebrity he got from the show, and he seems to have learned to be more cautiously candid. It's not a trait I'd want him to lose entirely though.

As Emcee said, there isn't really anything in that song for anyone to be offended by. The problem seems to be with the misinterpretations and defensive reactions.

ETA: Really good point about how "pretending" could mean "acting," Jyn

Thanks, Chloe.

The first time I heard Book of Endings was at his Indiana college show and I laughed. I really liked it right away. I thought it was catchy and I immediately took it as tongue-in-cheek. When I went home and listened to the CD and read the lyrics, I was really confused since it's pretty vague- but I still loved it. I was in no way offended as a fan, or otherwise for that matter.

I've been a Joaquin Phoenix/Johnny Depp fan since birth. Those two, especially Joaquin, have a very mean and dark sense of humor reporters HATE. He was called the worst "celebrity to interview" and he wasn't really that famouse back then.

Joaquin is painfully shy so his jokes are always taken in the worst way possible ("is there a frog in my hair"), but that actually makes him more interesting and people love learning that he's shy and that his agent actually held his hand during the Golden Globes to calm him down a bit. Yet on screen he's a lion, he's beyond shame, he's stripped of everything that doesn't allow him to become who he needs to be.

But Adam, I don't know him. He works mostly on stage where I can't watch him so I had to really give him the benefit of the doubt because of his voice. Then I read a few posts in this thread and figured, "he can't be all that bad if so many people here seem to love him".

I admire people's talents, even the ones I don't like (aka Colin Farrell who I know love and I still can't believe it). But Adam is not mainstream so you have to work your way into his merchandise and I found myself wondering if he was worth all the effort.

For some reason I never disliked like Adam and I saw that Rosario D. really liked him so, yeah.

I still wouldn't call myself an Adam Pascal fan (more like an Adam Pascal voice fan) because it's too early. As of now I'm just extremely happy about his LA concerts (and extremely sorry I never got to watch him live).

mmm, I love Joaquin and Johnny as well. I saw a biography on Johnny Depp and it had a clip of a reporter asking him when he and Kate Moss where getting married (obviously this was a while back). He hesitated then said "are you going to change your underwear tomorrow?" I thought it was a great way of showing that those personal questions had no place on a red carpet. Good for him!

I'm not sure how Joaquin is with fans, but I heard Johnny is wonderful. Voted the best celebrity to get an autograph from recently. He stayed outside for 3 hours signing autographs at one of the Pirates 2 premieres. Pretty cool. Oh, and we were born in the same city (20 or so years apart, but still) so I gotta show some love for Johnny! (Just to had to throw that out there... haha)

But anyway, back to Adam... re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part ten

I don't understand why you're condemning Adam for acting this way towards reporters/fans/whatever, while justifying Joaquin Phoenix's similar behaviors. It's a bit hypocritical, in my opinion. *shrugs*

I think Adam is still learning about handling celebrity but has gotten a lot better at it.

Are you going to one of the LA shows, She? If so you'll get to see him live and maybe meet him. That should help make up your mind. It's kind of depressing to me that there is apparently so much animosity out there toward him that it made you doubtful despite how much you like his voice.

ETA: Skittles, I think She means that there's a lot more information available about Joaquin to make his behavior understandable, as opposed to Adam. There actually is quite a bit of info on Adam too, it's just less accessible probably. Updated On: 7/16/06 at 05:36 PM

orangeskittles - Maybe it is but that's why I came and posted here. Because I don't know anything about Adam (you guys seemed to know a lot about him) and all the bad stuff in the Rent boards wasn't helping. Joaquin I grew up watching and knew of his shyness and lack of grace. Adam? Not really. I didn't even know he existed 4 years ago.

I'm learning as I go.

**

Chloe - I wissssssssssshhhh I was going but I'm far and unable to assist. It would be something to hear him live!

Re: goggling him.

I always wanted to see RENT but never could so I knew I had to wait for a movie to be made. Then I found out that one was being made and that Rosario was going to be Mimi so I FLIPPED. Then the search for this "Roger" began. That was probably by mid/late 2003.

I'm telling you, nothing came up. A few pictures of him with Daphne, short bios that I don't read, fan sites that hadn't been updated in years, empty forums ("OMGZ!!! He's so hot!!" yeah, so helpful, lol), etc. Nothing of his solo work, nothing.

Maybe I gave up too soon but I wanted to know what he was like, was he tall, short, Chinese? So I saw a few pictures of him and that was it. Until the movie came out and then everything went into a frenzy. It took me a few times after I saw the movie to ask again, "WHO is he".

**

Jyn - right there with you! And so cool about being born in the same city as JD! I was actually born in the same city as Joaquin (San Juan). That's gotta mean something, right?! *hopes*

You probably started looking in 2004, when the movie information started coming out. It sounds like you were just unlucky with what you found. For instance, the original of this thread was started in July of that year, but I guess you didn't see it. There's definitely more information out there now, of course.

She- oh that's fun that you were born in the same city as Joaquin!

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part ten If I ever meet Johnny Depp, I'll probably be like "WE WERE BORN IN THE SAME CITY!!" and look like a complete idiot.

I have this secret fantasy that he for whatever reason decides to come back and tour his birthplace or visit relatives that may still live there and I can be his tour guide! re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part ten

and yes, if anybody gets the chance to meet Adam, take it. For Heaven's sake, I saw Adam walking by going into the college and I lightly called out "adam!" instead of actually approaching him like a human being. he never heard me. I'm kicking myself to this day. Of course, by the time I realized it was him, reacted, and then unfroze myself, he was down an ally. I would've looked like a stalker if I followed him. lol

His official site didn't pop up on Google? Yikes, that's weird. And not good!

Well, they cast Adam (and the other OBC members) in late October of 2004. I was under the impression that Columbus met with the OBC members, chose who he wanted and nixed the others before going and casting for the roles that weren't filled by OBC members... but they had been screentesting for a long time before he cast them, so I suppose it's possible that Rosario was cast pretty early on. That means Daphne was never asked and Tracie was cast way later after Fredi agreed not to do it? Eh, I guess it doesn't matter.

Anyway, yeah. What do you want to know? :)

I remember late 2003 because that's when posters at my board started opening threads for this movie. Maybe it was 2004 when I looked but my memory says late 2003. Heh. Not that it makes any difference now.

As someone who once forgot her own name, I can't be trusted with factual information. re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part ten

I found this thread on Google not long ago because I was looking for a very specific discussion on Roger/Mimi and one of your discussions here came up. Actually it was more like a small comment somebody made about it but the search engine caught it.

That's possible. The movie has been popping around in some form for years; the final version came to be serious, at least publicly, mid-to-late '04.
