Unless you're invloved in a wonderful production like The Pillowman, smartpenguin, then I will love you with all my little heart.
QM
But I don't think he did *that* badly. He's just kind of a poor little fishy!
How did you feel about Billy Crudup's performance, QM? I've read some criticisms of it, which is unusual.
No, I don't think he did that badly either, hence my comment about a fish being out of water. He's just miscast as he doesn't pull off this loving dad character one second. He sang the score beautifully but give this man something to work with.
QM
I would never work on anything that awful*********
Is Raul more like a duck on a frozen pond than a fish out of water? Trying so hard to waddle to the bread, flailing all about because the stupid water is frozen and slippery.
Chloe, to tell you the truth, I almost disliked Billy in the first 10 minutes of the play as I felt he was overacting a bit. He really managed to pull me over on to his side later though, especially when he goes into his 'story telling mode'. I don't think he'll get a Tony for it as he has some very strong competition but I thought he was wonderful. And what a gorgeous and sweet man he is too.
The Pillowman is the best play on Broadway in the last 10 years, without a doubt.
QM
Oh my God, smartpenguin. That's the funniest image.
Good to put some mental funnyness in. I really saw that last winter, it was the funniest thing ever. (Very much like Raul in Chitty as well.)
Well, he does flail.
And flit.
And flutter.
God, I love him.
What did you see last Winter, penguin? Chitty? In London? Or are you talking about The Pillowman now?
WTA: I realized now you were talking about the ducks, sorry. I'm not very quick tonight.
QM
Interesting - it must be quite a difficult part. How would you compare Pillowman with Doubt, the other straight play I might like to see?
Regarding Raul, I admire actors for trying parts outside their usual range, but I guess it's possible for even someone as talented as he evidently is to go too far. But sometimes you need to see where "too far" is.
flailing, flitting and fluttering can be some fantastic stuff to watch. Especially depending on the frame of the flutterer.
I have a friend who insists quite simply that Raul is just too gay for the part.
I think it's more the fault of the role than it is of Raul, but I suppose that's just my bias speaking. I wish it wasn't. I don't know.
Those 3 F's were BRILLIANT, and alone worth my money, pengun.
Doesn't like the "too gay" stereotype on Raul works, to me, just weird material.
Chloe, Doubt is a must see play too, you should really try to catch both of them.
The Pillowman is very dark, disturbing, funny and it will follow you into your dreams.
Doubt is very disturbing in a different way, it scared me to see what 'rumours' could do to you.
I trust you know the synopsis for both of the shows, right? Both are mind-blowing, The Pillowman just had me on the edge of my seat all night long whereas Doubt will challenge your thinking a bit more... do I make sense? I doubt it, at 1am!!!
QM
Emcee, I see your point but Michael Ball was able to pull it off perfectly and that's besides him being too gay and not the best actor.
QM
That made prefect sense to me, QM. Although I can't say I am the most normal in my consideration of written works, as this message is indicative of, my thoght process has a very irregular way of working.
Then you should love The Pillowman, penguin, as some of it works exactly that way.
QM
You said "not the best actor," and I just had the scariest thought!!
I just re-read, edited and re-edited what I wrote about him. It's not too much of a love-fest. I tried to be fair... ish. This is why I won't be a successful critic. I don't have the heart to give what they deserve.
Emcee, my 'not the best actor' was refering to Michael Ball.
And I'm a very biased person too.
QM
Thanks, QM, that made perfect sense, and I am familiar with the basic subject matter for them both. At least now I know to save Doubt for when I am actually alert enough to think,
1am *sigh* I should really go to bed. Good luck with your review, Emcee, and thanks for the laughs, Penguin!
But you know what the scary thought was, don't you, QM?!
I hopeing to make Pillowman in the first week of May. I have to entertain a friend this week, I already have Sweet Charity, Streetcar and RENT tickets.
It seems as though I would love Pillowman, I hope so.
I tend to be overly critical Emcee, although every now and then I rave, then feel bad about that and pick to death, then feel bad about that and rave again. Then I tear the whole thing up and go to the park.
Well, the not the best actor comment and your scary thought could only really entail the one and only, right?
*has all of a sudden a VERY scary thought too* *hides*
Night Chloe.
QM
I'm starting to teach myself to be more critical, penguin... because I know I'm not really b*tchy enough to be a good critic, as appears to be the case. I'm trying to teach myself to be honest, but there are a few lines of bias which I can't cross. I mean, if Adam gave the worst performance in the history of the universe, I'd find something by which to stand behind him.
One and only, QM. ONLY.
