And he's violent...my friend saw him and said he hit the table so hard during Another Day that Krystal (Washington) fell off of it...I mean, really...Roger's angry, but he's not abusive...
I've seen it quite a few times and can't keep everyone straight. I remember Manley Pope Trey Ellet and Loraine Velex were rather impressive. And there was this one tour ::digs through playbills:: (January 2004) that I really enjoyed. It had ome guy named Constantine Maroulis as Roger, Brian Gligor as Mark and Jamie Lee Kirchner as Mimi. Otherwise the OBC takes the cake
Amasis, the voice of sanity has returned!!! *bounces*
Anyway, I've read that some people said Matt is great 'when is not bored'. That makes me like him even less. If you cannot be bothered to give 100% or are too bored with a show you have been doing in the last few years, work in a department store!
I agree with Insomniak about Jeremy. I saw him twice and although I don't have big issues with his voice (although he tends to be a bit nasal and whiny for me) but there is something about his acting I didn't like. I think he doesn't get the right 'mix'. I just don't find his Roger very likeable, he comes across as too grumpy and too angry. I never feel anything for his Roger, I tend to like my Rogers a bit more on the vulnerable and desperate side.
I know that the OBC cannot be replaced (considering the experience they've had), I just wish some other casts would at least try to make an effort. Rent has become the show with the most bored actors and the most apalling stunt casting and I have yet to see a show that can get even close to claim that title from Rent

"And he's violent...my friend saw him and said he hit the table so hard during Another Day that Krystal (Washington) fell off of it..."
I should't laugh, but that image made me chuckle.
In Boston, Dominique Roy played Mimi and when she was opposite him she matched Jeremy's ferocity, so you see these two desperately wounded people who just can't quite reach out to one another. (And thankfully she never fell off the table when he kicked or hit it.) Even though I missed the vulnerable side of Roger (and the vulnerabilty is one reason -besides that voice- of why I think Adam was so successful in his take), I thought that 'wounded animal' approach was interesting and touching nonetheless. I was touched, anyway. (Not in the way you think, QM). But certainly I don't expect people to see things my way only. (Except for QM -- YOU'RE finished!!).
As for Jeremy's voice, yeah, the twang sometimes bothered me. And I realize this is being petty, but I thought the facial contortions Manley made when he sang the hard-driving rock songs looked painful. He sounded beautiful in his 'Glory', though, I'll give you that.

" I tend to like my Rogers a bit more on the vulnerable and desperate side."
WON'T.MAKE.JOKE.
Ah! I love Roger debates. Here is where I stand. Jeremy has a decent voice. It just doesnt fit THIS role. Why would a New York, hard rocker have a country twang to his voice? I find his acting choices to be wrong too. He is TOO angry and TOO co*ky. Lets run down the list of what Roger is going through.
1. Just found out his girlfriend killed herself
2. Just found out his girlfriend killed herself because she had AIDS
3. Just found out that he now has AIDS
4. Is a recovering drug addict
5. Is poor because he doesn't have a job.
6. His friend is now his landlord, and said they didn't have to pay, now he wants the entire years RENT.
Not quite a good life at the moment. From what it seems, all this stuff happened all at the same time. He is a broken man. The reason why he is singing "I should tell you" over and over again is because he wants to tell Mimi about his past (and his health) but is scared too. This is why i think the vurenable angle works better.
Also, the fact that adam was uncomfortable with acting and musical theatre at the time (or at least the beginning) of RENT, it really helped him with that.
'I was touched, anyway. (Not in the way you think, QM).'
*Innocent face* Well, I would have never thought....
Actually, at least you 'were touched' and didn't have to touch yourself while Jeremy was performing.
QM
yeah, Jermey isnt my favorite Roger, his voice is to...ugh...Lets just say Adam is the only and the ultimate Roger!!
Gah, to tired to function, must sleep, studyed all day, now dead, swimming at 5:30 tomorrow morning. I hope i dream about Adam is all i can say. Ill talk to you all tomorrow
TGIF - well, those are good points. However # 1 - 3 aren't quite right. Those were stuff he found out 6 months prior; it hadn't JUST happened. The back story sets the frame for the current situation, but depending on Roger's background, childhood, education, etc., you can react by being vulnerable and desperate (we're liking that word!!) or you can be so desperately angry at the world that you become irrational and violent. In that sense, both approaches can be valid.
Ultimately, like I said, I think Adam's approach worked better than Jeremy's . It's just that I enjoyed both of them, strictly in an innocent sense, of course.
"Actually, at least you 'were touched' and didn't have to touch yourself while Jeremy was performing. "
QM - Jealous?
And I am now giving up all pretense of having a rational discussion. *Picks up ALL of Emcee's flip-flops and hurl them all in QM's direction*

I actually really liked Jeremy's Roger. I mean, nothing compares to Adam, but Jeremy was my favorite out of the ones I've seen the whole show with.
I HATED Manley Pope's Roger. I saw him the first time I saw RENT, and he drove me CRAZY!! The cast was phenomenal except him!
Now...Adam's Glory... *sighs*
Hmmmmm I wonder how we would all feel about Jeremey etc if we had not heard/seen the OBC before him... Just like I saw the Little Shop tour before listening to the CD, therefore I absolutely love Anthony and Tari Kelly MUCH more than Kerry Butler and Hunter Foster, even though people think I'm insane....
"However # 1 - 3 aren't quite right. Those were stuff he found out 6 months prior; it hadn't JUST happened."
I figured as much. I meant to say "relatively close together." You do have to be diagnosed with AIDS and have it for a certain amount of time to be put on AZT. So it had to be atleast a couple months. Going to see RENT Saturday. I still enjoy seeing Jeremy perform as Roger while i am seeing the show. But when looking back and analyze/critiqueing, he isnt my ideal Roger.
speaking of Anthony, any word on his contract for the tour?
You're going Saturday, TGIF? Have fun, and post a review (and hopefully Emcee will review, too).
'speaking of Anthony, any word on his contract for the tour? '
I haven't heard anything (but I guess that doesn't mean much). The last news I heard from Anthony was that he'd 'been approached for the role of Mark in the Rent movie' when I had asked him what he was planning to do next at the sttage door for LSOH. Unless he has something lined up for after the tour, I bet he will stay with it for a while longer.
Here's what I am thinking...again just my weird consiracy
Anthony was approached to do the RENT movie. With the possibility of doing the movie, he hasn't renewed (extened?) his contract incase he gets cast in the movie?
What do you think about getting some of the OBC to be in the movie. I know they said they wouldn't go back unless the entire cast went.
Since they won't go back unless they are all there, every single one of them or an understudy of theirs needs to quit their job immeadiately and demand the roles in the movie. It's Larson's musical, those were Larson's choices, and since he isn't here to pick new people, they should use the ones they have.
'*Picks up ALL of Emcee's flip-flops and hurl them all in QM's direction*'
*Bounces and therefore all flip-flops miss their target*
QM
Sorry, I wasnt THAT clear. I mean, since Anthony was approached, do you think he will end up turning it down because the rest of the OBC isn't in it. Then again, its a movie, a job, and a paycheck.
TGIF, actually they said that they wouldn't return to do Rent on Broadway unless all of them come back. I'm sure that's a completely different story for the movie. The movie is going to be BIG, I doubt any of them would miss their chance being part of this, no matter if none of the others get signed.
QM
Bouncing a lot, tonight, aren't you? Or is that a nightly occurrence?
Hehe I know what you were asking TGIF, I just have a very strong opinion on the casting Sadly, I really don't think anyone will do it unless they all do. However, it's become apparent from the concert that Daphne and Adam haven't quite lost their touch
I think they should use Adam Daphne and Anthony at least then I could live with whatever messed up casting choices are made. Actually, now that I think about it, using Taye, Idina and Jesse just MIGHT satisfy the stunt casting need, but I'm really pushing it aren't I...
