re: The Official Dane Cook Is Not Funny Thread

My brother is obsessed with him. He walks around listening to him on his iPod, and is constantly howling with laughter.

I don't get the appeal. I mean, I guess he's funny, but I don't understand how my brother listens to the same thing a thousand times and thinks it's JUST as funny. Not my thing at all, but then again, I'm not a fan of most stand-up in general.

I haven't seen him enough times to hear him do the same things over and over, but I can watch old HBO One Night Stands and such over and over if the comedians are good and laugh just as much as the first time.

re: The Official Dane Cook Is Not Funny Thread

I had an interesting conversation about him just last night with a fellow BWW member. If you compare him to someone like say, Lewis Black, he's not funny at all. Dane Cook points out the obvious, whereas Lewis Black says something and you go, "you know, he's totally right!" But Cook just says something that we're all already totally aware of, and makes it loud and obnoxious. Granted, he can be funny, but I don't understand the hype.

Lewis Black is great too, but he also is very loud. Everything is angry and shouted.

lewis isn't all yells. He builds, and then has a small explosion. Then he retreats, and builds again. There's pacing to Lewis' comedy, whereas Dane is like a runaway train. (I happen to find both them quite funny, but Lewis is in fact one of my favorite comedians.)

Dane's comedic timing is just perfect. While his material is usually funny, it wouldn't be anywhere near as hilarious if it weren't for the way he delivers it.

re: The Official Dane Cook Is Not Funny Thread

Dane is a fairly new comedian who is getting a lot of hype. He's talented, and has been in many movies. He has stared LOADS of trends such as "rocker quotes" and the "SUper FInger". All comedians are different and have a different appeal to different people.

Lewis Black is great too, but he also is very loud. Everything is angry and shouted.

His schtick is that he points out the insanity that is our culture. He's mad, and it accents his points.

I've heard people say that 'all Lewis Black does is shout', and that is not true. There are brilliant routines I've seen him do that are delivered in priceless deadpan (for example, the "ballwasher" speech). I've even read stuff that I've never heard him say, and I crack up. In my opinion, there is no comparison between Cook and Black. Then again, I'm biased.

Speaking of Dane Cook...

I don't find him funny at all. Charming, talented, etc. But, nothing that he says makes me laugh. I've watched many of his comedy specials, and while I got a light chuckle here or there, I spent most of the time waiting for a payoff.

re: The Official Dane Cook Is Not Funny Thread

I loathe Dane Cook. Not only is he an obnoxious hack, he is also a NOTORIOUS joke thief. It's well known within the comics community that Cook will steal work from lesser known but much better comics (most notably the superb Louis CK), then put his own spin on it (ie, just YELL the joke). Stealing material is simply unforgivable.

So in short, Dane Cook sucks. The end.

re: The Official Dane Cook Is Not Funny Thread

I tried to watch the recent 90 minute Dane Cook HBO Special and ended up turning it off after about 30 painfuly unfunny minutes. I didn't even crack a smile, let alone laugh -- not even once. His material was awful and though he was working hard jumping all over the stage and making faces to try to make it funny -- no dice. I've seen one or two little funny bits from him in the past, but I thought this recent thing was just awful.

re: The Official Dane Cook Is Not Funny Thread

I really don't like Dane Cook and think that he's not in the slightest bit funny. But maybe it's because all my friends would not shut up about him, so, when I finally did see the hbo special. I was let down. It was moronic

re: The Official Dane Cook Is Not Funny Thread

The first time I saw him was on SNL, and I had never heard of him. I was impressed.

I love Louis CK as well. He's fantastic. He's much better as a standup than an actor (the couple of episodes I've seen of Lucky Louie have been a disappointment).

I don't like the Dane Cook tour series on HBO. But I do laugh at his standup.

He yells and expects that it makes the "joke" funnier.
